EHD - Blue Tounge

Hey guys,

Just wondering how bad is it looking so far this year, I know its gonna be coming up here in the next few weeks when people are gonna start finding dead deer. How about the Midwest? KS, MO, IL,
any word on it yet? Im praying it didn't hit my spot in North Central Kansas like it did last year, It was hard finding a shooter that was alive last Fall.

Thanks,

Nothing in Iowa yet.

LoneWati 08-12-2013 10:45 PM

I don't think it will be as bad!!! Has yet to be very dry in August which is weird I know! Rains have been a long time coming!!! Hopefully Kansas can rebound from the grasp of this long drought. It is looking promising with all the rain the last few weeks.

fastetti 08-13-2013 04:55 PM

As long as we get a consistent rain here and there we should be alright. The temperatures have been average to below average and combine that with the decent rain we've been getting so far this summer I think were in good shape. Knock on wood!

MUZZY 100 08-13-2013 05:26 PM

Ya ,don't think it will be anywhere close to what we had last season. My farm is in central Illinois and I haven't heard of any found yet.

Wilcam47 08-13-2013 09:56 PM

wouldn't it be wise to let the big guys go? unless you are overpopulated with deer then...disregard...

MZS 08-14-2013 05:16 AM

I think the problem last year was the drought. Many deer concentrated at watering holes (and feeding areas) where the flies can bite them. Also, some say that when the water dries up, the mud left leaves a good breeding ground for the fly. See http://wildlifemanagementinstitute.o...cles&Itemid=54 This year, the rain has been decent and temps not too high for the most part.

I have worries. My neighbors dog drug up a little 6 pt 2 weeks ago. And I've noticed a doe missing one of her fawns. There are a few places where I can smell dead but can't find the source so I dunno

Message from an old curmudgeon

The last thing to find on a hunting site is real real bad news. If you really want to find out, you do your own search on the internet. And for most, it's a specific area.

As a curmudgeon, I know how to search and ruin a newbies' year.
Just enter on your internet search - deer diseases 2013. That'll give you all the current news that posted on the internet.

And then you could check on a particular state by searching -deer diseases 2013 Illinois (specific state)

You don't find hunting disneyland in these searches. And sometimes the end of the world doesn't come.

I hunted NCK last year as well and found a nice buck that had died from it. Where about in NCK were you hunting?

danjares 08-20-2013 05:27 PM

I will be hunting the Lovewell area - Jewell county

DJfan 08-20-2013 05:30 PM

Still a drought in WY, but no reports of blue tongue that I have heard of.

danjares 09-10-2013 05:47 PM

Anything else?

fastetti 09-10-2013 06:10 PM

I haven't heard anything where I hunt in Central Illinois. I'll be there checking cameras and finalize trimming this weekend. I'm hoping that we are still in good shape. We got a 1/4 inch of rain down there earlier in the week so that should help a little bit, at least get some water in the creek.

We have found/heard of them in various parts of Illinois. I have a guy I work with that has a large deer herd and he lost a doe last week to EHD. Vet certified. We have heard of several others in both So. Central and So. Il that have found deer dead in or near water. Soit looks like its still here/here again.

Team Radical 09-11-2013 07:00 AM

We have found them in Central Illinois and Southern Illinois. Also I found 2 dead in Western Illinois Yesterday. Seems like these past 2 weeks have really been a killer. Here is a link to a couple we have found so far. What a shame.

I have seen or heard of it as bad in NC KS as it was last year. We found and heard of a few nice ones last year that died. This year it definitely looks better up there. Where are you hunting up that way?

bowhuntertx 09-11-2013 04:00 PM

just saw your area. We are west of there a little ways

pjhunts 09-12-2013 05:19 AM

danjares 09-12-2013 06:50 PM

Dang, sorry for the loss's thats always bad to hear, But its good that its not as bad as last year! I hunt Covington Indiana as well, wasn't bad last year. Don't think it will be this year either. I pray-

iayotehunter 09-12-2013 07:48 PM

Starting to happen again here in Iowa

danjares 09-16-2013 01:59 PM

???

I know EHD was bad last year but I hunt up by Salina Kansas and didnt find any dead dear but a few does this summer. They are ahead of there normal rain year so I think we are okay. They had few months where they got 20+ inches of rain. I think in 2 days back in end of july they got 1ft and 2'' in rain and flooded everything. Blue tounge wasnt a problem on the farms I hunt in North Central Kansas

fastetti 09-19-2013 03:43 PM

This rain hitting the midwest tonight should really help with it. Most of us are going to be hit hard. I know it just started popping up where I hunt in Central Illinois but after being on the farm all weekend I didn't see/smell anything. Again, with the rain coming tonight, if we get an inch or two that should really help slow it down a lot. Its a double edge sword. More rain = Less EHD, Less rain = Crops come out earlier. We just cant win! :)

pjhunts 09-20-2013 03:59 PM

Yep. Gettin a lot of reports from my buddies of dead one s they have found. I've found four so far
