I would definitely explain to him the importance of shot angles and identify what a good shot to take is. It is surprising how many people don' t know that it is just as important where the arrow comes out, as it is where it went in.

Sounds to me like you are doing a good job of teaching I' d try to set him up where he will at least SEE deer. Nothing more disheartening that sitting there for hours and days without seeing anything.
