Peeing out of your stand

This hunter I know that does very well with killing big bucks with the bow year after year, says he pees out of his stand every hunt, and even in scrapes, and says the deer are not only unafraid of it they are attracted to it.

This goes against everything ive ever known about hunting, but he swears by it. How do you guys feel about this?

nchawkeye 11-20-2012 02:07 PM

You've heard wrong, pee is pee...Deer can't tell the difference...

I've never use a pee bottle and whenever possible pee in scrapes and add a little Tinks, this really makes big bucks mad...

huntingkidPA 11-20-2012 03:59 PM

i never knew if they could tell so i pee in a creek or puddles when i can. good to know that it doesnt bother them!

WNYhunter 11-21-2012 01:40 AM

Pee is pee uh? I can tell the difference a morning after drinkining gennys or having a bunch of coffee. I cant believe deer that will come into a bottle with a few drops of tinks cant tell the difference. I play it safe and go with the pee bottle, my goal is to get in and get out without ever being there as far as a deer is concerned.

redgreen 11-21-2012 08:56 AM

Pee is pee. They smell it and figure that another deer is trespassing on their turf.

CVG Ohio 11-21-2012 09:34 AM

Just wondering if "Pee is Pee" then why bother with scent control or products in the first place? I use a Pee bottle myself.

i think pee is pee for the most part too. I suppose if you ate something that really effects the smell of your pee it might spook a deer, but i think for the most part it just breaks down and deer cant tell the difference in it and any other pee in the forest. Now if you happen to be in estrous, disregard above theory.

TDC 11-21-2012 11:43 AM

Based on this week's hunt I know that bucks, and does will investigate your pee. However, I'm starting to wonder if it puts off the really big bucks, since once you pee you only see them once on the trail cam.

neck4752 11-21-2012 04:14 PM

I pee in scrapes....I can show you the videos of deer coming to them and getting mad and then peeing in them

bookfire1238 11-22-2012 12:09 AM

I love this review I really love it

RidgeFACTOR 11-22-2012 08:04 AM

Deer are curious, they will inspect most anything but piss wont spook a deer no more than spitting on a deer.....I have done both.

blb078 11-22-2012 09:09 AM

I've never noticed any diff when I pee from the stand. But just for those doubters see the link below.

I don't, and I see/kill plenty of deer. I watched deer completely ignore (not avoid) an area where I took a leak. It's up to you.

stapher1 11-22-2012 10:52 AM

Let her' fly. Not matter what you eat or drink, deer can't tell what is human pee or some other animal pee.

HDMontana 11-23-2012 05:55 AM

I use to take a pee bottle to my tree stand. Forgot it one day and had to pee out of stand. About 15 minutes later a 3x3 came through, walked under my stand to smell where I peed and walked off seemingly unconcerned. Ever since then, I quit using the bottle. So far so good.

Buckyou 11-23-2012 07:35 AM

i take a dump in the scrapes. nah, but can't imagine after a night of drinking and mexican food that the ammonia in pee isn't off the charts. especially anything made with vinegar..........pickles, hot sauce , bbq sauce, pea soup, sauerbraten etc.

isatarak 11-23-2012 06:10 PM

I think you should all piss, spit, even take a crap all the way around your stand. Not me though.

Charlie P 11-25-2012 08:34 AM

WNY hunters after drinking a bunch of Gennys I'm surprised it's the pee you're worried about and not those Genny farts.

dutchman62 11-25-2012 10:14 AM

Well, had call of nature this morning so dumped the water bottle and used it. Unfortunately not big enough so some went to ground. I normally use pee bottle or pee in puddle or creek. But since damage was done, google it and got mostly same responses as here. So after hunt applied pee bottle to 2 real scrapes and 2 mock scrapes. We'll see what the cam says next weekend! LOL.

PalmettoKid 11-25-2012 05:02 PM

I also crap in deer beds...

Rhody Hunter 11-26-2012 02:00 AM

I just pee away . Have shot deer15 minutes after peeing. Pee in the scrapes they tare it up afterwards . When you got to go there is no sence holding it in . Be comfortable , go pee.
Try it and find out . Plus when I do pee out of the stand they don't get close enough to smell it before being shot.

CVG Ohio 11-27-2012 08:17 AM

This hasturned into a Pissing contest ;D!

WNYhunter 11-27-2012 06:24 PM

Charlie P, nice one. you are right about that though I dont sit in a blind those mornings

Thunderchicken217 10-17-2013 11:23 AM

I used to worry about pee as well and used to carry a bottle but dont anymore. I do believe pee is pee and seen it work in scrapes many times. The exception being if you do drink alot of coffee or if you take certain types of medication then I would advise against it bc if I can smell the difference Im sure a deer can but if your just drinking water or soda or something along those lines I have seen deer tear up a scrape with human pee in it. To each his own on this one I suppose.

My wife and I used to go camping/hunting together... In fact, our honeymoon was actually a huntingmoon. (Ya, my wife is that cool! and hot too!)

I have a farmer friend with 1000 acre dairy farm and he'd shut down the back 400 acres for my wife and I to do whatever...

So we did all this hard-core camping and my wife would sit in my truck several hundred yards away and watch me with binoculars while I was in my tree stand. I was usually parked on the side of a tree lined cornfield that had been chopped down so it was relatively easy for her to see me.

Anyhow.. after 3 or 4 hours, she would eventually have to step out of the truck to go pee.. I could see her from my elevated tree stand..

After several years of this routine, I noticed something very strange.. every time she was menstruating and went pee next to the truck, a buck would walk right up to the truck and hang around for a while..

It was so reliable, I started having her pee about 30 yards in front of my stand whenever she could. It worked every freaking time.

To this day, I am still amazed... Corn, pumpkins, apples, etc.. nothing works like a little bloody pee!

RidgeFACTOR 10-17-2013 03:29 PM

Urinating while hunting doesn't spook the deer at all. I even rub Copenhagen and spit below my stand, it doesn't bother them at all.

Wilcam47 10-17-2013 08:49 PM

ive pee'd in a scrape I found recently...on my way to my bear bait...the scrape is still active and the bear are still taking my bait...of course Im not pee'ing in the bear bait...but they left piles of dung all over so I doubt it would deter them....LOL

Hoyt21 10-17-2013 10:48 PM

I think if your in the woods alot and you piss on everything and everywhere they would get use to it. Anyone can piss on the ground and kill a deer but when its comes to an old mature big buck and your bowhunting....think twice before pissing on a scrape or by your stand. They live in the woods...and your urine is something that isnt natural to them. Might fool a small scrub buck but not a booner.

Noticed there wasnt any mature giant bucks on this thread...not conviced. Pee bottle for me.

deernutz 10-18-2013 08:29 AM

I've never peed out of my stand, but I wouldnt think it would make a big deal. There are so many smells in the woods. It's just another pee smell. I wonder what would happen if someone ate Asparagus the night before and then peed out of the stand. I think maybe the deer might smell it and throw up and pass out. Then you'd have a broadside laying down shot at 25 yds. Might work you never know!!

BarnesX.308 10-18-2013 08:47 AM

We have bobcats, foxes, coyotes, bears and fishers peeing all over the woods all the time. So, there is vegetarian and carnivore pee everywhere. No biggie.

My dad's buddy still does the pee bottle. He came into the house one time and poured it in the kitchen sink. He is now forbidden from such things.

Because there is a ton of money to be made on scent control products. Pee is pee, unless like stated above, you ate something that really throws off the odor, like asparagus lol. Dropping a deuce on stand, ehhhhh, probably wouldn't do that.

Deer have been harvested for 1000's of years, long before any so called scent control was available. Not saying you should fry fish on the deer stand or or dowse yourself in after shave prior to sitting on stand, but peeing is fine. And if one wants to bottle it, that's fine too.

d80hunter 10-19-2013 04:30 PM

I carry a pee bottle and use it. Ten years ago I did pee out of my stand and on one particular day a doe came under my treestand. I was curious to see how the deer would react and it walked right up to where I was peeing and stopped. The deer did not approve of my urine. She turned around and went back the way she came in a semi-casual manner.

The deer had to walk right over the pee to get spooked. I would not be worried about pee spooking deer from a distance. However most of my hunting is close range so I pee in a bottle.

jerseyhunter 10-20-2013 01:43 PM

It's the same sound as a squirrel peeing only difference is if your taking medication.

I love Asparagus...no wonder I smell a strong stingent odor when I use the bathroom. Learn something new every day.

whitetailcrazy 10-22-2013 01:43 AM

It's true I've got several wall hangers and I pee out of my stand also! Just make sure there are no deer near when peeing from elevation, because I had been busted that way!

huntinboy1122 10-22-2013 07:17 AM

Sometimes nature calls and you have to go. I usually scrape a bunch of leaves away do what I have to do and cover it back up when Im done. Take a bottle with me when I remember but try to hide it as much as I can when I dont have one and when you just gotta go. This will go on and on with people's opinions but I think you do what you can to avoid leaving any scent and youre better off!

rockport 10-22-2013 07:47 AM

I don't pee in scrapes or on trails etc but when I have to pee I pee.

pjhunts 10-23-2013 05:57 AM

Yep. Let the pee free! I pee in scrapes. Mock scrapes and near rubs. Does anger them and or make them curious. I've got 7 on the wall so I can't complain about the results. Don't buy into all the scent control bs that these companies are makin a fortune on. Just hunt smart and use the wind. Tried and true

arrowman2317 10-24-2013 05:48 PM

I am not sure, I saw an 10 pointer(dink like 115in) maybe 2.5 year walk right to where the pee was mine and sniff around and walk off no tail action or hackles on back raised....Yet myself in the morning I can smell the coffee coming out and sometimes if I have a sports drink, I can smell this too as different....If I can smell the difference I can guarantee you the deer can smell it too but do they interpret this as danger or different so what.....You know the sideline is if it is coming out as waste in your pee, are you not too off gassing as sweat??
