Game Camera

Some of you might remember a post I made about putting my camera up too close to a poachers stand. Well I end up getting it and moving it. Well it appears that it snapped a shot of the poacher and he took it [:' (][:@]
I decided that I wasn' t goint to stand for it so I went to Wal-Mart and bought a pair of bolt cutters, went back & cut the chain on the poachers stand (yes he had the cojones to chain it to a tree) and took his stand. Tomorrow I' m going back and posting a note telling him we can " trade back" if he wants but we' ll meet at the land-owner' s house where he' ll be forbidden (probably have authorities there as well) to hunt there again, etc.

2 things:

For all you bow-hunters: Did I go too far?

For you poachers, GO GET YOUR OWN PLACE![:@]

no, i don' t think you went too far. the old eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. but, that' s if he stole your cam. how can you be sure it was him who stole it. hope you get your cam back. good luck!

RE: Game Camera

There' s little to no doubt. The owner knows his property pretty well and this was THE undidentified stand. The camera was less than 100 yards from his stand.

Only problem I have with that is if it turns ugly. I know that we have to take a stand sometimes (no pun intended) but if the guy is willing to hunt where he doesn' t have permission he might be willing to break other laws as well.

Watch your back. Good luck.

Hope all goes well and the poacher gets what' s coming to him. BTW, how do you know if he is a poacher or just a plain old trespasser?

That is really frustrating whan things like that happen. I would have handled it the same way. Good luck getting it straightened out.

Good Luck!

I have to admit that I probably would have done the same thing. The stand was on private property and the person in question obviously had no permission whatsoever to be on it.

Bummer about the camera. I hope you get it back.

Definition of poaching is taking game illegaly, including trespassing. That' s what I meant, not necessarily that he was taking them out of season.

RE: Game Camera

i guess i worded my question wrong....

I meant to ask how you know this guy is a poacher. Did you see or hear him poach anything? Do you know him personally? Etc... He could be a photographer! LOL;)

You did what i would do though! Good job!

Good luck

If I owned land and found a stand that didn' t belong there I' d take it to wether or not he took my game cam.[>:] Good for you I hope the stand comes close to the price of the camera!

RE: Game Camera

It was a 15 ft. ladder stand with nylon straps, 2 tier at the top one for sittin' and one for your feet. The friend that was with me had purchased one for his daughter last year and it cost him $130. My camera was like $120 after shipping so I guess one-upped him. But it' s not like a trade I " chose" though...

RE: Game Camera

i guess i' d double and triple check with the land owner to make sure he doesn' t know whos stand it is and that he didn' t give them permission to hunt his land....then i' d do exactly the same thing....or i' d wait in the bushes and take a pic of him and give it to the sheriff.;)...either way i probly woulda done the same thing....

bscofield 09-08-2003 05:32 PM

RE: Game Camera

didn' t have time to wait and catch him myself. Had to go home (4 hours away). I checked with the owner before I took it down and again afterwards. If something happens and it was a goof, it just gives me another excuse to go out there for another weekend :D

BUT, the owner was positive it shouldn' t have been there... funny thing tho, his wife told us that this other stand we had found wasn' t supposed to be there so we took it down too but just put it in the bushes cause we didn' t want to lug it around. Found out later from the owner that it was his friend' s [:o] So I have to go put that one back up. But he KNOWS the other one wasn' t supposed to be there.

Poachers ruined my hunt last year (my VERY first one), it' s not going to happen this time! [:-]

RE: Game Camera

UPDATE: The guy has not contacted me. I' m pretty bummed but am trying to make the most of it (I have his stand setup right now). I didn' t think that he would try and contact me cause I made it clear that he would be off the land. Maybe i shouldn' t have done that because now he' s probably still out there on the land and I can' t get to him.
I guess I' ll just have to go get another one

Well Here in Pa. it is aagainst the law to bait. first I would of talked with the landowner and made sure the guy did not belong on the property. I would of left the stand there . Then take a salt block and put it near his stand. When you see him hunting there call the wardens and have them nail him for hunting over the bait. He would loose his hunting rights for a couple years. Then he would not be able to have a chance to steal and trespass somewhere else. Hey nothing to good for a stinkin thief.

RE: Game Camera

My only comment on this is now with the second stand showing up and ending up to be a friend of the owner or his wife, it sounds to me like several people are on this property, and you are assuming it was a poacher that took your cam. You being 4 hours away from the property could be the case of the stands owner(the one you took) he may have not been back to see the stand is gone, Could be a guy that made an honest mistake of property bounderies. he may have hung the stand with no intentions of coming back until the rut? I know I have about 4 stands up right not that I don' t even hunt, but I will in Nov. around the 10th. I would think that it would really be unfair to take a stand on the assumption that the stand hanger took your cam. I think if you spend more time there I bet more people are visiting that property than you think, invited or not. Just my 2 cents ofcourse.

RE: Game Camera

well the property line on that side is umistakeble: IT' S A RIVER. I told the owner everything and he knew the location of every stand on the property that SHOULD have been there. His wife was the one who did not. But anyway, the situation can be solved with 1 phone call, so I' m not too worried.
