RE: Help me with my bowhunting setup.
I' ve heard the minimum KE for whitetail is 50-55lbs Josh Keller, is it your draw length that is limiting your speed with that light arrow...something seems odd to me as well. If you could give us more information such as draw length, poundage, bow makeup...etc. Your 47 ftlbs is more than adequate for whitetail deer, remember shot placement and limit your distance. |
RE: Help me with my bowhunting setup.
I was trying to help Josh the other night....here' s his first post with my reply: Should help to iron things out.......
Josh: Heres my setup. 57 Lbs Hoyt Havoc with versacam (2001) 28" draw length 65% letoff 365 grain arrow only 1 brass nock on the string. Drop away rest. I' ll take a quick shot Josh....but with those Hoyts ya never know, it just might be right. I think the Havoc versa only had an IBO speed rating of around 300 to start with (maybe 298ish? or was it 305?) Anyway the way I see it........Drop 20fps for draw length = 278fps Drop another 5-7fps for a 50-60# model= 272fps At 57# you are 80grs OVER IBO legal whcih will probably mean a loss of 30-40fps (1fps for every 2 or 2.5grs?) I' ll call it 35fps loss = 237fps Brass nock another 2-3fps = about 235fps total with your 365gr arrow. Josh if you are saying now that your draw length is actually 30" you can jump that speed up close to 260fps. You did say that you just chrono' d it and got close to my first estimate tho at 238fps? My guess for that set-up is: 28" Draw= 235-240 fps 29" Draw= 245-250 fps 30" Draw = 255-260 fps (I' ll err a little on the hide side simply because I' m not sure exactly what that bow' s IBO rating really is, but I know it' s not a burner) If you can figure out your draw length for sure this might give you a better idea of what that bow should be shooting. If your draw length is 30" then that should change all of your numbers for the better. |
RE: Help me with my bowhunting setup.
Sorry for the confusion Matt. 28" arrow, 30" draw. I should have paid more attention to my post. Also, ZR200 limbs if that makes a difference. My neighbors chronograph read in at 238 fps, so im actually going to have to assume its correct. The one at the local joke of a shop here read at 160 and some change. I' m actually beginning to beleive it is only going at 238 fps, even though I am at 30" draw length. Basically what it boils down to, is if I do me part, that arrow is going to go through that deer and that makes me happy...until next season at least ;)
