Do you take a book?
Someone suggested to take a book to read during the hunt to help with the boredom. Do you do it? Do you think that this is a good Idea, or is it to much of a distraction

RE: Do you take a book?
I don' t take a book magazine or anything with me. I like to keep my ears open and my eyes peeled for any movement that might take place. but, I do take a nap or 2 while on stand.:D

RE: Do you take a book?
I would not suggest taking any reading material either. There are a lot of times they some how sneak up on you while you are paying attention, let alone not paying attention. Reading and flipping pages will only take your attention away from where it really needs to be. When that deer sneaks up on you if you are reading a mag or something chances are you might not get that shot. Between putting the reading material down securly so it dosen' t fall to the ground standing up grabing your bow aiming and taking a shot with out being busted could be a little too much. Alot of times you only have a couple of seconds, especially during the pre rut to full rut. Them big boys are usually in a hurry trying to find them does. Just my opinion though.

RE: Do you take a book?
I' ve know a few hunters who have read while in the stand, and they have never been very successful. I would not recomend reading. If your hunts are fairly long each time (more than 4 hours) shorten them up alittle. Hunt the prime time! I so know several hunters who only hunt 1 1/2 to 2 hours at a crack, thats pretty manageable!
Good Luck! |
RE: Do you take a book?
If you plan on reading, try taking something to read that you won' t get too caught up in the plot. Every paragraph or so look up. I have never done this, but I have heard of people doing this successfully.

RE: Do you take a book?
I' m like bogobble. I don' t take anything to read, but I do tend to take a cat nap or two. I' m a light sleeper. ( If my job is running smooth, I do the same thing at work on midnight shift).I open my eyes every few minutes to look around for any deer sneaking around. It is amazing how a 5 minute nap can revitalize you.

RE: Do you take a book?
I tried it early last season and got burned. I would read half a page and look around for a few minutes then read another half page. I just happened to be reading part of a page when Mr. Decent 8 point wondered down the trail right where I was set up for him to be. I had time to dump the book in my coat, stand up and by that time he was past the shooting opportunity. I haven' t taken reading material in the woods since.

RE: Do you take a book?
I think that would be a bad idea. I like to stay alert on stand. If I am in a stand where I don' t think that I am going to see anything so I take a book to pass the time.... It' s to move or switich stands!

RE: Do you take a book?
I usually stay on stand from daylight to dark and I dont think I could do that without a good book.
Someone suggested not staying on stand so long but my way of thinking is I stand a lot better chance of getting a deer if I' m sitting in my stand reading versus being out of my stand because I got bored. As far as success (knock on wood) I seem to do pretty well. 11 pt. and 8 pt. last year. Just my 2 cents worth. Have a great day! :) |
RE: Do you take a book?
Yes and no. During archery season I definitely do not take anything with me to read. However, during rifle, especially when I take the hunting blind, I do take a book to read in order to pass the time.
I would not do it during archery because, from my perspective, you have to be more alert because your shots are much closer and the foliage is much, much thicker. In rifle I tend to be able to see farther, hear them coming more often and have more freedom of movement inside the blind when compared with a treestand. Just my two cents. |
RE: Do you take a book?
boredom. Leave the book at home unless your on an all day rifle hunt. |
RE: Do you take a book?
Time seems to fly for me when I' m in a stand plus I' d be worried about missing something if I were reading a book plus the movement of putting the book away plus the pain of possibly losing my page in the book plus the movement of having to reach over and grab my bow would all be too much for me. I stand most of the time locked and loaded with a few brief moments of when I sit...I' m wired on stand.

RE: Do you take a book?
my dad told me about it.... i' m definately going to this year.... this last march i went and just sat in my tree stand..... needed to relax.... i brought a book..... its really hard to quit listening for tell tail sounds or looking around..... it definately keep u out there wayyyyy long...:D
see u all have the same problem..... u hang ur bow up...when u read u lay it across ur legs with an arrow knocked and ur release on ur hand..... all u have to do is slip the book in ur pocket and attach ur release and shoot frim a sitting position...[8D] |
RE: Do you take a book?
I live all year long for hunting season. I read and re-read my hunting books and equipment technical manuals all year long. When I go hunting, I prefer to hunt. I have had far too many animals, elk and deer come in on me so silent that I was surprised to see them. Few get away because I am not reading " The Old Man and the Sea" but am paying attention to the task at hand.
Besides there are two detrimental points about reading material in the stand: 1. Unless the pages are printed on camo paper the pages as they are turned can easily be seen from quite a distance [provided you are not in one of thaose concealment stands; 2. It is not always to turn pages silently, and sometimes the wind can flip a page or two also. So no reading for me . . . it keeps venison in my freezer. |
RE: Do you take a book?
I don' t take anything with me on the stand, I just sit back and enjoy the show that mother nature has to offer.

RE: Do you take a book?
The last time I took a book to my blind 4 nice does walked up on me before I noticed them . Now I take pocket video games like Battleship and Trivial Pursuit which allows me to combat boredom . Both games move at a pace that allows me to look up now and then . Both also have a " sound off" feature .

RE: Do you take a book?
That' s me ducksndeer, the best book in the library is being played live right in front of me, or behind me.

RE: Do you take a book?
Well, I guess I' m a " bad" hunter, cause I often read a book.lol I am not a person who can sit for hours looking at the same trees and leaves and not get figity or bored. Some people can, I can' t. Some people can also work in a factory and pull a lever every day, day after day, I can' t. If there are deer moving, then no, I don' t read a book. However, if I haven' t seen anything in 30-45 mins, then I will read a book for a few mins and then put it up. It helps pass the time and eases my mind up a bit. HOWEVER, I will also say that these guys are right, you will get distracted by reading and will probably have a deer walk up before you can put the book down.lol
One more thing that got me to thinking.......aren' t we all out there to enjoy nature and our surroundings and just have a good time? I know I am, sure I want to kill a big buck but just being outdoors is better than being in the office. So if reading a book while sitting in your stand is enjoyable, go for it!!! The whole point is to get outside and have a good time. If you enjoy sitting out there in the middle of God' s creation and reading, don' t let me stop you! |
RE: Do you take a book?
Guaranteed way to coaxe out the monster bucks is to be reading a good book, napping (hopefully in a ground stand only), or squating over a downed tree with TP in hand. It makes their day.:D:D:D

RE: Do you take a book?
I have to agree, it' s probably not in YOUR best interest to take a book into the stand. Some guys might get by with it and not miss anything but I' m willing to bet that anyone who reads much can' t honestly tell you that they haven' t been surprised by their quarry while reading. I have a cousin who doesn' t understand why he doesn' t see much while in stand. His brother and I keep telling him he has to stay awake to see something:D
