Len the DEER dragger!!
Yup, he went and ruined it. I can' t be picking on him anymore about having to drag his deer. We were out on crop damage this morning. I took a shot I had no doubt my bow would make. Well, it didn' t work out exactly as planned. I hit this nice doe dead center from above looking head on. I hit her in the spine, it glanced off and didn' t penetrate worth a dang. I won' t be making that shot again. I' m pumping 65 foot pounds but it still didn' t do it. It knocked her flat to the ground. She go up and took off with the arrow laying flat on her back. I gave her about an hour and climbed down for a look. Long story short, it wasn' t an easy track at all. The saving grace was she went into the cornfield. The leaves wipped what little blood there was off her back as she went. I lost her a couple times and got within about feet of her and didn' t see her till she took off. In fact, I walked past her 10 yards, lost the blood and she jumped when I came back. She lit out but not to fast. I didn' t know it at the time but she only went about 20-25 yards this time. I' m sneaking and peeking and saw her laying 10 yards away two rows over. I found a hole and finished her off.
Len called and said he had one we had to find. So I' m messing with my deer and he comes looking for me. I had dragged her out of the corn about 50 yards to gut her. I finished gutting and he shows up. I' m getting my stuff together and he takes off with my deer. I guess he just had to get even with me. I stopped to get my stand and he kept going. I thought he cut back through the woods but he followed around the edge of the corn. A call on the radio informed me he had my deer at a point where we could drive. So, ole Len dragged my deer 500 yards. Not only that, he hadn' t informed me he found his own and dragged it out to. Now I mean, what' s up with that? He had all the fun of dragging by himself.[:o] Not only that, he had someone who needed a deer. I don' t even have to cut up venison today. Life is good. So, the moral of the hunt is. If it isn' t a good shot, don' t take it.... no matter how good your equipment may be. The deer was only about 5 yards away, when I shot from 20 feet up. It was a great tracking job I did but a lousy shot to take. Deer Dragger Len drilled his. He found it just a few yards from where he last saw it. It didn' t go far. Mine went about 200 yards. When you don' t get lungs and you don' t have an exit hole and the entrance is straight down on the spine it isn' t good tracking. |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
No offense Dave, but my moral of the story is that its GREAT that Len is now healthy enough to BE Deer Dragger Len again! :D
After the scare Len its good to see you ' Pulling Your Weight' again.;)[8D] Sounds like an interesting time all around tho that' s for sure! Hunting in August........you guys stink! ;) |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
David, kudos to you for sharing and reminding us all of the right thing to do. Kudos to Len for being such a nice guy.
You guys are like kids again.... havin' all that fun is hard on the rest of us. ;) |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
I' ve been on the go this summer a lot and have left Len to his own too much. He' s been stacking the does up. His 11 year old has shot 1 also. I' m not sure how many Len has shot already.... 5, 6, 7? I' m not sure.
Yup, good to see him motoring. He' s real old you know;)( got me by a couple months I think). The guy is in good shape for an old crotchetty. While I' ve been off traveling he' s been hanging stands and killing deer. Heck, they cut enough meat out of him last fall to give him a new waist line and lighten his pack by several pounds.:D He needs these little hunts to maintain his sanity. At this time of year his shop is a zoo. They are busy busy and put in double digit hours 7 days a week. |

RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Wish someone would drag my deer [:' (]
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Congrats to you and Len! I' m glad to hear Len is back on track.
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Ohio Bowhunter 75.... he got back in the saddle quicker than anyone would have thought last year. I believe he finished with 16 bow kills last fall, plus a some with the XBow while his surjury heeled, plus some with the smoke pole.
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Well it' s good to hear Len is back in the saddle, and the he can still shoot well. David on the other hand never was " out of the saddle" yet can' t make a simple shot;):D. I know what it was, you must have been using them old thunderheads? That would explain why you had such a rough time! LOL;):D
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Right on the Thunderhead. I' ve shot similiar deer in similiar spots and had it blow right through. I guess she was too close.;)[:o]

RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Ya know, this story does not really surprise me that much....especially after getting to hold Len' s bow in my hands. It takes alot of stamina to be totin' around that puppy so I am sure a couple does are a walk in the park for him. :)
David, Glad to see you are still putting them down...one after another. How many does this make for you so far this year? |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
PA... I haven' t really been hunting. I went a couple times and passed on some small spotted ones. One time all I had walk by was a herd of bucks. One time I drew blanks and then this deer. We only hunt the first couple hours of the day due to the heat. I' ve been away for a lot of trips this summer. In fact I' m leaving for another one Wed or I would have gone hunting this gloriously cool low humidity AM and afternoon.
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
I thought Len mentioned something about you heading up somewhere when I was down at his shop a week or two back. New York maybe? I just assumed it was a hunting trip.

RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Thank you all for your concern and well wishes. It was ' touch and go' for me for a while last year at this time. God was definitely with me and gave me some more time to raise my kids and hunt with Dave.
Dave has been very busy this summer running around the country. He hasn' t been out anywhere near as much as previous years. First, I owed him for dragging my deer last year and second, I figured he didn' t have the strength to do it himself. :D You know, he is getting VERY old.;) I shot #7 Saturday. Dave took a big doe. My son held back on a shot he felt was too long. My son has taken 2 so far this summer. Our landowners are VERY emphatic about us taking deer. Our farms are infested with deer and they demand that we take as many as possible. If we don' t, they' ve already proven that they' ll take other actions.[:' (] Anyway, Dave is a great friend and fantastic hunter. I am proud and privileged to hunt with him. And, I' ll drag his deer for him any day. He' s already proven that he' d do the same for me.:) |

RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Great to hear that Len made a great recovery and I' m sure he' ll agree when I say " you ain' t livin' unless you' re draggin' " :D
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Len glad to hear your doing well!
Dave....I' m sure he' s just saving up....as many as he whacks each year, I' m sure he' ll need payback (and probably on a whopper that has to go uphill) ;):) Good luck guys:) |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
You two are what the rest of us aspire to be.
Two crotchety old farts stacking up deer one after another. :D:D Betcha thought I was gonna say something nice didn' cha??;) |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Hey, I am just surprised that we got through this while post without seein' that picture of David' s rear again. ;)
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
David run down to the store and buy Len a set of wheels so he can at least roll the deer out to the road. You old guys are sure hard to learn.:D:D:D
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
I have a deer cart... he has a better one. We just don' t get around to using them anymore. I used mine when I hunted alone and off the beaten path. I also have one of those deer sleigh thing-a-ma-jigs that I take with me to NY because I' m always way off the road there. It' s a lot less fuss, lighter and works better than my deer cart. When I walk in I strap it on my back pack and have it if I need it.
|
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Yes, I have several deer carts and several 4 wheelers, but I rarely use them anymore unless, like Dave said, I' m by myself and have a long way to drag.
Heck, if I can carry a 9 1/2# bow around all over the place (including Montana), I can surely handle an average deer.:D |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Len!?
9 1/2lbs!? Who are you kidding!! I saw and held that thing.......if its a pound its 37lbs!!;) I' ve shot deer that weigh less than your bow! You really could drop a little weight off if you sacrificed the combination VCR/DVD player and LCD television screen...:D Do you still have a picture of that thing laying around? Len is the only guy I know who has " On Star" on his bow in case he gets turned around on the way to the treestand.[8D] |

I wonder how much that bugger would weigh if he took off all those Sims gadgets.....3, maybe 4 lbs.... ;):D |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
Ya gotta watch Dave, he has one of the fastest knives around when a deer is down. Turn your head its gutted! :D Dave where was that deer sleigh when we were dragging Erik' s deer out, we should of had it then, or got Len. ;)
If you folks ever get to hunt with Dave and Len its a treat, great hosts. They practically argue about who is going to help you with your deer. Two better hunting partners would be hard to find. [8D] |
RE: Len the DEER dragger!!
You guys looked like REAL men to me. Am I to assume that looks are only skin deep?:D My bow holds on target like a rock - after all, it' s a boulder![&:]
Steve: It was a pleasure to have you and Erik with us last year. At least Dave and I weren' t fighting over each other' s deer.;) Maybe Dave and I could host a yearly hunt for out-of-towners? Nah! They couldn' t handle the two of us.:)[X(] |
