How often do you practice?

I have noticed a peculiar thing the last few weeks. The more I practice, the worse I shoot. I have been shooting about 30 times a day, with both broadheads and field points. If I shoot every third or fourth day, I hit great. When I start to shoot a lot, I get more erratic. I shoot my compound instinctively. How often do you practice, and has anyone noticed this in their shooting?

well in a normal week i probably practice maybe once a week. i should pratice more, but after a day of working i am not ready to practice. well for me i have noticed that the more arrows that i shoot in one practice. that i do seem to do a little worse. my only thoughts are the your muscles may be getting a little tried. so relax for a day and try again.

During the off season I shoot once a month at best,In July I pick it up to every other day and the in Aug. I begin to shoot every day ,but as deer hunter suggested don" t over due it,it becomes counter productive as you begin to fatigue

RE: How often do you practice?

I used to shoot every other day. Maybe for two hours. Get a buddy and it breaks the monotony, and, it gives you little breaks instead of just standing there pounding the target.

Too much practice can and will cause you to start messing up. Your muscles need to relax and regain oxygen when you exercise them too much.

Most important part of practice, end it on a good shot. When you start getting tired, and you start to see your groups trying to open up, stop. If you keep shooting, hoping to improve, you' ll only get more tired, worse groups, and keep right on shooting trying to improve. So, when that happens, the next good shot (not group) that you make, stop. Otherwise it' ll eat at you and before you know it, you' re back out there in a few hours, or the next day and your muscles haven' t had a chance to recuperate.

Good luck to ya.

I don' t shoot very much. I' ve picked up my bow once since last season and shot 8 arrows. Barring any need to change something, I will shoot 4-12 arrows once or twice a week once september gets here. Probably shoot a couple times between now and then.

After several Robin Hoods, my accuracy started to fall off. Although my cable guard was loose causing much of the problem . . . but I was shooting a dozen arrows at each 20, 30, and 40 yards . . . I also conluded that I was shooting way too much and I had peaked far too early.

Now I am shooting 4 arrows at these same yardages and sometimes less and my accuracy is back bigtime.

I try to shoot a lot this time of year (50 to 70 every other night), main reason to build muscle memory working on form while tired. With 5 weeks before season I will really cut back to 20 every thrid night. With 30 days before season I will commit to a head and tune that one in and shot nothing but those till the season is over. I hunt mostly from the ground so also I will walk a couple of hundred yards between shots. I figure this will simulate the work of a stalk in the woods. Last thing i want to happen is to get a good shot chance and be tired, which will make for a bad shot.

I st-up aa range inside my office and can shoot a max 27 yards. I try to shoot about 10-15 tow or three times everyday. I have also noticed soemtime the more I shoot the worse I get and then other days.

I try lots of diffenrnt arrows and set-ups so I guess it pays to keep practicing!!

SEE YA

I shoot about 100 arrows a week all year long.

August is a big month and I will fling a good 300 arrows a week. to really build strength

Come Sept. I back the quantity down and shoot broadheads only.

During the season I force myself to practice as much as I can - though its tough:)

Too many bows, too many arrows, and too many holes in the target.:D

Few shots a day before and during season. If im shooting with friends the rest inbetween shooters help rest my muscles otherwise after a few shots my groups open up.

I shoot almost every day. I have a 15 yard target in a room next to my office, and I often take a break during work and go shoot a dozen arrows. I also have an outdoor range at home with 3D targets and a large Morrell target bag that I can shoot at from as far as 90 yards. In addition there is an archery shop with indoor and outdoor range, about 2 miles from where I live. I really enjoy shooting and I use all three of these frequently.

A lot of my shooting is blank bale or working strictly on aiming or back tension. I probably average 300-500 shots/week, though I know some weeks are well over a thousand.

I shoot 3-4 evenings per week with about 25-30 shots during each session. Come September I start to increase the number of shots per session to get ready for the opener on Oct. 1.

Every day, that it' s not raining, Monday thru Friday except Jan thru April. Probably 15 at 20yds, 15 at 30yds and then 10-15 back at 20yds. At least once I will shoot some at 40 yards.

I shot 12-15 shots every other day or so. Remember it' s quality not quantity. When on stand - it' s that 1st shot that' s important.

I used to shoot a lot (but not everyday) until tendonitis set it. Be careful and beware of shooting too much with radical cams. Now I have to ice my shoulder after every session and my shoulder reminds of it 24-7.

I throw arrows once a week until August. Then I go every 3rd day or so....By Sept 1st I' ll be going every other day until Sept 15th (opening of small game here in Michigan) Then I' ll go every day as the weather permits. I usuallly only throw about 25 arrows each time. I have a 5-spot target and put 1 arrow at each spot, retrieve ' em and do it again 4 more times.

Great point, especially for me these days.

I find the same thing. I usually try to get out once a week in the off season, then 2 or 3 times a week for the month before the season begins, then once the season is in full swing, im back to once a week. That is always on Sun. since in VA, you can' t hunt on Sun. and the rest of the week, instead of practicing, I hunt.

i spose i shoot close to 100 arrows a week.... usually 3 or 4 days of shooting... sometimes with my lil cuz...we helo each other with our form... and i' ve noticed also that if i shoot too many my groups and accuracy really start to get bad...

RE: How often do you practice?

I don' t see the need for a guy to " practice" much with a compound bow. Traditional equipment is a different story. But unless you are a tournament shooter or just love to shoot, I don' t see the need for hunting. When the season ends on December 31, I hang my bow up and don' t pick it up again until around August and then I shoot a couple times a week until October 1st, and then I hunt. Hunting is what gets the meat and the horns. As long as I' m grouping well at 20 yards consistently, I' m good. I do shoot a couple 3d' s in September as well.

jeffmiller 08-07-2003 03:34 PM

RE: How often do you practice?

I kinda agree with you wolfen. I shoot a compound, though it' s without sights. When I shoot at deer or turkey, it happens so fast, and I know the shot will be good. Since I don' t shoot past 30 yards or so, practice isn' t really neccessary, but I love to shoot my bow.

Every day at this time of the year. My 1st year bow hunting, I need all the practice I can get.

buckkilla 08-07-2003 11:05 PM

RE: How often do you practice?

It really depends. I try to at least shoot my bow once a week so that my form stays correct. There is such a thing as too much shooting though, because you might get tired and develop flaws in your form which equals bad practice. Before Bow season, I usually shoot 2 times a week max and I shoot until I notice flaws in my form and notice that I am getting tired. I then either take a break for a while or I just pack up my bow and call it a day.

RE: How often do you practice?

I try to practice every evening that I can--the weather sometimes cancels that. I send a group of arrows downrange from 20 and 30 yards and then spend the rest of each practice session at 40 yards--sometimes throwing in some practice at distances out to 70 yards.

Red Hawk 08-08-2003 08:50 PM

RE: How often do you practice?

I try to pratice every day for at least two hours. I been praticing for a month and i still have along way before i am happy with the way i shoot. Once i get the basic form down, let alone an form best for me. After that i was going to try to shoot in different positions like one knee, sitting, so on so forth. I know i am way off but i was thinking about maybe eventually try to shoot in an 3D compeition. Its more to see how good i can be rather then if i can be better then others.
