RE: 2 blade versus 3 blade?

I have used the two blades for years, and can tell you a few things about them that I have experienced. My main blades were magnus and stos. The penetratation that you can get on them on game can be stagering. They seem to slice through like butter. IMO, they have been the most accurate blades that I have shot. Also, the non-vented blades are extremely quiet in flight. The only problem that I have with them is the lack of blood trail. I always brushed that off thinking that they give as good a trail as any other blade. But I have changed my opinion on that after years of using them (deer). I have had more then a few double lung shots that have not left a blood trail until the deer stops. And ussually where the deer stops is where the deer dies on a double lung. So I didn' t find blood until I was about 5 yards from the downed deer. This happened to me twice last year. Almost exact same shot placement. It just worries me after thinking about it if I didn' t make a 100% deadly shot, and what type of trail I would be facing.

:):)I started out using the two blade bear broadhead. Actually if you count the flimsy little bleeder insert it could be a four blade. Ive killed deer with all three (2,3, and four blade) broadheads and Im sticking with the four blade. Penetration isnt usually a problem with todays boys with the exception possibly of some of the bigger game animals like moose or elephant. I like the hole a four blade head leaves. I dont like the idea of a two blade broadhead sliding just over or just under a major artery without hitting it. [:-]

in my opinion 2 blades are better for their cutting diameter and that they take away less kenetic energy... but 3 blades have more cutting surface... right now i shoot muzzy 3 blades but before i bought those i was looking for magnus stingers... but the scheels i went to didn' t have them so i got the muzzy' s

I have used them both and found the 3 blades to give much better bloodtrails. At over 70# of KE I have not noticed any difference in penetration.

i have shot 2, 3 and 4.... the 3 blades lines up w/ the fletchings seem to fly much more like field tips and i also havent ran into any problems papertuning like ihave w/ the 2 and 4 .... as far as penetration, i have never shot animals w/ other than the 3 blade

Theoretically anyway a head with at least 3 blades will always assure that at least one blade will be cutting " against the grain" of the muscle or tissue. As has been mentioned with a two blade there is a possibility of the muscle or tissue coming together in such a way that makes the blood trail sparse. Of course theory and actuality can somethimes be two separate things.

I have had many lethal hits on deer and elk where there wasn' t much of a blood trail with a three blade head.

I have only taken two deer with a true two bladed head, both of the blood trails were terrible, but as it turned out I didn' t need them because I watched both deer fall over. :)

RE: 2 blade versus 3 blade?

I find the penetration of the two bladers excellent and the blood trail has never been a problem. But I have never followed the blood trail of an animal shot with a three blade so I can' t really compare the two.

I also find that the two blade broadhead that I use (blackstump broadhead, I don' t think you guys have them over there in the States) are very reliable and extremely tough. The 3 and 4 bladers seem to be quite a bit weaker when it comes down to smashing though thick bone[:' (].

So I think I will stick with my trusty ol two blader for a while yet.

I shoot 2 blade magnus (125gr) heads as well, and I agree totally. As far as the blood trail issue, I haven' t had a problem. I will say though, that they seem to take a little longer to get started bleeding good, then the 4 blade heads I used to use, but after a little bit they bleed fine. It' s not usually a problem since most run less than 100 yds anyhow. I' ve shot quite a few with both 2 blade heads and 4 blade heads (muzzy) and they both work well. IMO the advantage is to the 2 blade on penetration, no doubt.
I like the idea that if for some reason I goof up the shot(which can and does happen to the best of us), I have the most penetration availble going for me. Any head (2,3 or 4) will do the job if the shot is good, no doubt. It' s what happens if it' s not so good that concerns me. I like having all the advantages I can. Five shot did a report on the Magnus stingers that was excellent as well(both 2 and 4blade models).

Taz...I forgot to mention about 3 blade heads. I have used 3 blade muzzy and thunderheads as well(though not in a long time), and really don' t see much difference in the 3 and the 4...performance wise or blood trail wise. Pretty much personal preference.
