They don't influence me at all because I am generally impatient, I don't want all of the hype. I like things presented to me short and sweet. Plus I am a stubborn fellow.

Cougar,
It is taken a year and a half for you to acknowledge the obvious, to me at least!
By the way, I was born in Missouri! A Missouri mule has NOTHING on me!

Having been in the ad business for years, I would have to say that ads must influence people to buy product. Otherwise I "would not have a job". Apart form that I can say for myself that something has to "feel right" for me to plunk down the cash for it. Now if I could only find my way out of this site before I "loose my job."

I wouldn't worry about the price of the marketing effecting the price of the bow. I once read GM spends about $17 per vehicle in advertising, and I also heard about $180 per vehicle. I don't know which one is right, but even $180 is only 1% of the price of the vehicle, so you might pay about $4 on your $400 bow. You pay about 6times that in sales tax (or 7%+ here in MO).
Research has shown the direct relationship between sales and a properly placed marketing plan. Coke knows they need to advertise X amount to get the sales they want, and if they only spend 1/2 of X, they know what they will lose. They also know that the cost of 1/2 X is nothing compared to the loss in sales.
And the next time someone says that they could DROP the price of a bow by not advertising, please explain to them that the increased sales brought on by advertising actually LOWERS the companies PER UNIT COST, which means they can sell the bow for a lower price and make the same or more money on it.
Its all a balancing act, people who can keep it balanced make a lot of money.
With that all said, there is the proper amount of advertising. I am not saying the 6 page ad is right or not, I don't know.
If they are screwing up with the 6 page ad, it will get pulled real quick. How long has it been running? If its been going on for months or more, then they are seeing that the ad pays off, or believe it pays off.

I think that Mathews ads are obserd. I think that they are too much. I am not bashing Mathews bows, but there ads are just a little too much. I bet the bows cost so much because they have to pay so much for those ads.
Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

I think it has a great affect on people. I am with a small Archery Co. CSS we cannot afford to advertise. WE do alright but know it would be a lot better if our name was all over the place. I have had other shooters of other companys would like to shoot our bow but they can not afford it. They are paid by Companys that have six page adds. Fellows that shoot our bows, do it because they like the bow.

I can honestly say I bought my Mathews before I ever saw a 6 page add or a commercial. Still haven't seen a commercial. Business is business, if you don't like it don't look. Do you really think Mathews is doing so great in the archery world because of 6 page adds? Or could it be that they make a pretty good product?

When I bought my Feathermax 5 years ago, I hadn't even seen an advertisement for it. I had seen some smaller ads for one of their bows the year before... Ultralight, maybe? Anyway, I shot a bunch of bows and liked that one the best, so I bought it. Very satisfied with it. Ads are a good way to make me aware of a product, but I don't have a big enough "hunting budget" to buy without some serious homework, and if possible, hands-on examination.
If anything, Mathews ads are a turn off for me. Too gaudy. But that won't stop me from trying out their latest (and everyone else's latest) when I decide I need a new bow.
Some folks on these boards seem to think most bowhunters are slack-jawed yokels, willing to buy anything that is trendy or heavily advertised. I'd like to think most of us are wiser than that. I know I am.

RE: how much does 6 page ads infuence choices
I have been bowhunting for two years and the second year was with a newly purchased Mathews bow. I didn't know much about archery when I made the purchase and most certainly the advertisements helped to shape my choice.
There are few bow shops where I live and magazines and the internet were the most readily available sources of information. Both PSE and Mathews had a catalog in my hands within a week of me requesting one from their websites. I remember that quick service influencing me a lot. Shooting both brands of bows at a shop was the final step.
The ads didn't sell the bow. They just yelled, "Hey! Check this out!" Mathews just happens to be the company that is yelling the loudest right now.

I think mathew is smart as far as marketing....I am also sick of their big fold out adds & we all know now that they originated the modern single cam since they tell us a million times on each page!
They are smart, they get top shooters to use their products, they give a hat with each bow, they are used by a large amount of the people in bowhunting magazines. A lot of exposure gets a lot of people interested in your products.
Martin gets a great deal of exposure by being on the back of Bowhunter, great place for an add!
anyway, yes I think the adds do get people interested in a product. I have seen a lot of good products & a lot of bad ones......the good ones are still here & the bad ones are gone!
