Default Got my first deer with a bow.

Kinda long read but I am excited with my first archery deer taken.

Got into the woods this afternoon, kinda breezy so decided to sit on my other stand to have the wind in my favor. Squirrels all over and almost dangerous with them dropping acorns like WWII bombers. Finally at almost 6pm the wind has stopped mostly and I hear foot steps that catch my attention. Its the same 3 doe I saw last week and took a shot at one shooting over her back.

Well seemed she remembered it also, I had all 3 behind brush allowing me to stand up, hook on my release, and ready to draw. 15 seconds later they got a decent line of sight one of the doe started bobbing and shifting her head side to side. My heart felt like it was going to to explode and tension of our standoff could have been cut with my broadhead.

I figured I was busted, and this hunt was over. After holding my bow and not moving for 5 or 6 minutes (felt like 5 or 6 yrs) she turns and tips back. I am relieved she did blow at me or white flag me. I stand still and just watch them fade back, but 30 seconds later the doe comes walking back. This time she just walks in like nothing ever happened. I finally draw back and find my 20 pin, she walks into my shooting lane just past 20 yards and let my arrow fly. The green lighted nocks I just made this past week fire to life and I watch it stick straight into her side.

She ran off and I watched my green glowing nock along for the ride watching her for as long as I could. I wait my time excited as hell I finally made contact, but concerned as the arrow didn't pass through. I unhooked my harness and packed up, walked to the spot I hit her at and saw great splatter of bright red blood. I leave my seat cushion on the ground as the starting point. I tip out and head home (live 2 miles away) know the wife would like to join me in the search. We get there about 1.5hrs after the shot flashlights in hand, and stuff to mark the trail just in case.

Blood trail was hit and miss and zig zagged, I marked as we went along. Then the wife spotted my nock off in the distance still glowing. Arrow was on the ground broken almost in half 8 inches from the nock covered in bright red blood. How she got it out I dont know unless it got hung up on the holly bush it was laying near. Almost an hour into the search we found her. She went about 50 yards from where I shot her with a few twists and turns.

I hit her alittle high and back than what I had hoped for, blowing through a rib on entry and exit got part of a rib. While the Grim Reaper definetly got the job done, my shot placement didn't give me the best blood trail to follow.

Wife helped me some to drag her, and did great helping me track. She got her first bow last week, so hopefully next yr she will be in the woods with me hunting.

Congrats! I've only taken 3 deer with bow and arrow (quite a few with rifle) and I far prefer bow to rifle hunting.

As 7point said welcome to the addiction! My first bow kill wasn't very glorious but it was a kill. My second was my buck last year lol which was a bit better, but it's quite the thrill ain't it? Keep up the good work and get some pics posted!

Congrats on your first deer with a bow. I promise that you will never forget that, it's a great accomplishment. Good luck the rest of the season.
