How high do you sit?

I was just wonder how high most of you sit for bowhunting. I prefer to be no less than 20ft off the ground when i got a bow in my hand. What about you?

blackhawk_archery 09-20-2010 07:24 PM

I prefer to be on the ground in a blind makes the deer and turkey so much more enjoyable to watch.

SouthDakotaHunter 09-20-2010 07:28 PM

I have probably been averaging around 15ft lately... I've shot deer as low as about 8ft and as high as around 20ft....

ILhunter59 09-20-2010 07:32 PM

ground level, without a blind.

CLOUD 9, MN 09-20-2010 07:56 PM

I hunted for years at 12 to 15 and would get busted from time to time.........the past 10 years all my stands are 18 to 22......rarely ever do I get busted......less than once a season.

Good Luck!

bigbulls 09-20-2010 08:00 PM

No less than 20 feet and usually 30 feet.

kateraxl2381 09-20-2010 08:28 PM

Right around 17 feet on average, sometimes lower earlier in the season, and sometimes much higher if I'm in tall timber when the foliage is off

ManofTheFall 09-20-2010 08:57 PM

My stands range from 15 to 25 feet.

Bowmaster82 09-20-2010 09:05 PM

about 20 to 25 feet and some on the ground depending the area.

MBmadness 09-21-2010 03:39 AM

I like picking a tree with smaller trees around it , so i have some back drop or cover in front of me . But i like to be anywhere from 18 to 25 ft up .

JesterUSCG 09-21-2010 03:51 AM

No less that 20', usually around 30'... It all depends on the terrain around me.

PALongspur 09-21-2010 04:02 AM

My hunting height varies throughout the season according to the terrain and the amount of foliage on the trees. I would guess my average would be 18 - 22'.

dmax4me 09-21-2010 04:17 AM

Early season when there is still a lot of foilage I hunt between 18 -25 feet up.
After the leaves fall, I go up another 5 feet. I beleive the higher you can go up the better chance you have of the wind currents displacing your odor.

Doubled 150 09-21-2010 05:36 AM

Of the 5 sets I've got hung, the lowest is 18', the highest is 24', with the other three right at 20'. When I use my climber, if it's a good straight tree, I'll usually go up to 25'.

countryboy96 09-21-2010 06:46 AM

My stand this year is 26 feet up, but the trail I am hunting over is up on a incline so I am realistically only 15 above that. I was tempted to go higher but... I am going to see how this goes first. I should have the wind in my face most the time in that stand anyways and its a 30 yard shot to the back side of the trail.

drockw 09-21-2010 06:49 AM

15-30+

Whatever the location calls for honestly...

UPHunter08 09-21-2010 06:51 AM

It all depends on the amount of cover and expected range of my shots. Most of the areas that I hunt have heavy cover and since most are publicly owned, I'm unable to do a lot of lane clearing, etc. So I usually sit 15-20 feet up. If I went higher than that I wouldn't be able to get a shot (would be shooting through nearby tree canopies).

MOhunter46 09-21-2010 06:56 AM

15-20 feet

luke/r 09-21-2010 10:34 AM

I usually sit 15-20 ft high

BOWHUNTER818 09-21-2010 11:18 AM

About 20-25 feet up i have my pull rope on my stand and its 25 feet and usally when i start pulling it up is when im usally high enough.

group Um Up 09-21-2010 12:25 PM

Well the truth of the matter is i put it as high as i think neccissary depending on theterrain i am hunting . . . On average about 18+ feet high.

But in placing my Tree stand i always Keep in mind . What Am I HUNTING ? Can It KILL ME ? so the real answer to this question for me anyways is . High enough for the bears not to EAT ME ! ! ! I dont wanna be plucked out of a tree stand like a tasty Fruit treat for a bear if you know what i mean! ! !

bigcountry 09-21-2010 12:43 PM

In the past few years, I try to go over 22ft. I have to say its made a big difference in deer scenting me.

I used to not go over 15ft, and seem to get scented quite a bit.

Rhody Hunter 09-21-2010 03:33 PM

I try to be no less than 20 but prefer to be at 25. At that hieght i am seldom spotted

ROBERTS021 09-21-2010 04:15 PM

i have a climber and i hunt at 18 feet, and the reason for this my bow rope is 19 feet and i stop right before my bow is going to come off the ground.

Recon Ron 09-21-2010 08:03 PM

18 to 20 feet

Fieldmouse 09-21-2010 08:08 PM

Anywhere from 20 to 33. It all depends on the conditions and the location.

Maryland_Whitetail 09-22-2010 10:01 AM

Usually around 20ish. I have been up around 40+ gun hunting one time. It was the last time. Little windy that night.

bowhuntn87 09-22-2010 10:16 AM

usually from 15-20 feet

*twodogs* 09-22-2010 10:41 AM

Until the leaves drop, whatever the canopy dictates, after that 20-25 ft.

ksharvester 09-22-2010 12:13 PM

im terrified of heights so my stands are at 13ft and 16ft then the other one im putting up is going to be 16ft also. should i be worried about getting busted?

my7pointmonster 09-22-2010 12:21 PM

I get a little carried away sometimes and I know my bottom platform of my climber has been 30 feet off the ground cause I have a 30 ft bow rope and its been off the ground, its way overkill but I usually sit around 20-25 I'm still young so why not go the extra mile.

Ryan.

-DeerSlayer- 09-22-2010 12:39 PM

16-30 ft up

Bible_Man 09-22-2010 12:55 PM

I feel that foliage canopy isn't the only thing to consider. Also, as I believe BigCountry mentioned, the higher you go, the less your scent will affect you negatively. I climb a minimum of 20 feet. Have gone as high as 34'-38', but rarely that high. I average 24'-28'. Steep angles help with blood trails also...nothing like hitting them high on one side and having all that blood spilling from a exit hole low on the other side!

XBolt ShortMag 09-22-2010 12:58 PM

my stands are 17ft. for bow and gun stands are around 25ft

marquismarc 09-22-2010 05:26 PM

I climb 20-25 ft. (until the rope tethered to my bow or gun runs out)

KCbuckeye22 09-22-2010 05:51 PM

20-25 hang on, 25-30 climber

MountainHunter 09-22-2010 06:12 PM

12-16 feet. I use climbing sticks and a hang-on stand. Due to a neighbor who poached deer all year long, the deer were unsually wary up until last year. But I see a lot of deer and have only been busted once in the past 3 years (scent or sight) that I know of. I am fanaticall about scent control and keep my movements to a minimum. I understand the rationale about keeping high up to keep out of sight and out of scent, but I'm not a huge fan of heights and higher stands = steeper shot angles = smaller target area.

Gladius87 09-22-2010 07:12 PM

The stand I've killed the most out of is a homemade rig that is about 9 feet off of the ground. I have some store bought ladder stands that are 15 feet. Got a climber this year I'm gonna stay around 15 feet with it. I'm not a big fan of heights. In my opinion, just make sure you have a good backdrop from all angles and you are gonna be in good shape.

Nope, u should continue to worry about being comfortable and safe!

A deer isn't worth it.

obsessed bowhunter 09-22-2010 09:34 PM

Anywhere from 18 to 25 feet up. Sometimes a little higher or lower depending on the terrain and what trees are available where I want to hunt.
