RE: Sitting in the stand?
I would not suggest chips but would suggest sandwiches, power bars, and or apples (deer love apples). When bringing food to your stand, make sure you have some zip-lock bags to store and discard your food except for apples. You can throw the apples on the ground after you have eaten then. By doing so, you will contain the scent after consumption.
Thanks and good hunting!! jt |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
I often take a snack of some sort with me, but I try to take something a little quieter than chips, and if its available something that dont smell too strong. If a deer gets downwind of you it will smell you or whatever you are eating so I really try to watch the wind. I dont eat my snacks unless I need to but I have them just in case, usually something kind of good for me like a piece of fruit or a granola bar and always water to drink. As far as height goes it depends on the terrain, but more importantly how high are you comfortable in a stand.

RE: Sitting in the stand?
When I' m in the stand, I rarely eat or drink....Just like when Im fishing. But, just in case, I do bring a bottle of water with me since when I open it, it doesnt make a loud hiss like a soda pop....I may bring a granola bar or a pop tart with me....but I usually dont eat it til I get back to the truck after I hunt, lol. I' m not sure how high you gotta be before the deer can wind ya, but I dont want to give the deer any advantage over me....I try not to move, even a little bit, or eat
Just my 2 cents. |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
that' s a real good question[8D] first off anyone that sit on stand, all day is a better
person then me, avoid chip' s[:@], other' s mentioned fruit, real good choice, I prefer candy bar' s, for quick energy[:o] |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
I usually bring a couple of peanut butter & jam sandwiches with me , along with some cookies , to snack on throughout the day . Besides keeping my belly from grumbling the carbs they provide helps to keep you warmer on a cold day . This is especially important for treestand hunters since they are more exposed to the wind . Your stand height is mainly detrmined by the environment you' re hunting in , and your tolerance for height . Just being up higher won' t guarantee that deer won' t smell you , the wind can change without notice , and will carry your scent with it . Scent reduction strategies are a much better bet for avoiding detection than stand height . I hunt from a ground blind , or still hunt , so scent reduction is crucial to my hunting style . The blind helps to contain what little I do put off , but doesn' t guarantee anything .

RE: Sitting in the stand?
Bring and do whatever you want to up in the tree. When the deer start blowin on ya and leaving you, then revise what your doing up in that tree.:D

RE: Sitting in the stand?
If you are going to sit all day - bring food and drink by all means:)
especially if its cold. I would stay away from the greasy stuff, but as mentioned power bars, sandwiches, and fruit are great. You can even bring pop (what the heck is pop[:-]) Just bring out what you bring in[8D] |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
rack-attack, i had to learn that soda, to pop thing, having moved up here from
staten Island, for anyone bring pop with them on stand, try to avoid pop with foam on top, you could get a ticket:D |

[quote]what the heck is pop )
Hey RACK, I thought thats what all you Yankees called Coke/soda?;) Maybe thats just the MidWestern ones.[:-] I always bring water and a sandwich when im in stand. I wouldnt bring noisy,(crunchy) or highly smelly foods. I think if a deer is going to smell what you are eating , he will smell you too. Years ago I actually had a small 4pt. buck finish off part of a peanut butter sandwich that I accidently dropped from my stand. Eating fruit is a good idea too. As far as how high. It depends on how close the deer is too you, how strong a breeze is blowing, how the thermals a acting , etc.. A deer directly under your tree may not smell you if you are 15-20 feet up. However, a deer standing 20 yards away may wind you unless you are between 20 and 30 ft. high. Over the past 23 years I have found that around 25 ft. is best for me. Under certain conditions I do hunt lower but on average im up between 20 and 25 ft. |
