RE: Sitting in the stand?
Like most of the guys have said, i usually take a few apples and some candy bars. Usually some POP!! Always take bottled pop so you can put the lid on it and its quieter when you open it. If you take candy bars or anything with a wrapper on it, take it out of the wrapper and put it in a zip lock bag or in a paper towel so when you open it up you wont be making noise with the wrapper.

Dried prunes and apricots.
Have energy building qualities and keeps you alert. :) |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
Dried prunes I would also in general suggest eating foods that are high in energy. Reason being, that you don' t have to eat as much of them. My problem is if I bring something, I sit there knowing it is in the bag, and I have to eat it right away!!! Also, you want to be as confortable in the stand as possible. So bring things that you like. |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
I do the fruit thing myself. I usually try to sit all day so I will bring an apple and will fill aziplock bag with grapes and plenty of water

RE: Sitting in the stand?
i usually live on peanut butter and jelly in the stand. i also like the gatorade with the wide mouth so i can use it for refills if ya get my drift. on a serious note i was told that the indians wouldnt eat before a hunt because of the smell. i think if you eat any sort of meat the sulfur compounds your mouth gives off lets them deer know a predator is around. i just cant give up those tabasco slim jims especially on a cold day. munch away!:)

If there are no apple trees in the area, throwing a apple coor by your stand would be more of a warning then an attractant to a big buck. Just my thoughts. |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
I always pack a few sandwiches and Gatorade or apple juice and some candy ( removed from the wrapper ) I usually eat a half a sandwich at a time it helps keep you warm on those cold days I remember shooting a doe with half a sandwich still in my mouth

RE: Sitting in the stand?
Jag-Mag, while deer are smart about their use of fight or flight they have no ability to reason. In an area with no apple trees you and I deduce that a core is out of place, deer only smell something good to eat. On the other hand if you leave human scent on the core they' ll leave in a hurry.

FFTJ,
Not to make a big issue out of this but I disagree with you. Throw an apple in the Core area of a mature deer, when there has never been an apple before, and you will get a reaction (he may come in to investigate or he may leave), but he will not IMO just walk on by and eat it:) And they can reason - to a degree - they know what belongs and what doesn' t. And how does he know its good to eat if he has never seen, let alone eaten one before:D;) |
RE: Sitting in the stand?
I agree with rack don' t ever throw something on the ground thats been in your hand, you leave a lot of your scent with your hands the apple core scent may not spook a buck but your scent will.
