How many carry an..?

This isn' t really for people who hunt from stands but just for a conversation sake, i am curious if anyone here carries a hanggun just in case during bow hunting? I dont think i would, and if i did it would be maybe wild boar hunting.

RE: How many carry an..?

It' s illegal to carry a gun while bowhunting in WY.....So I do not.....However I' ve never hunted in grizzly country and considering my irrational fear of bears, I would consider violating that law if I did hunt in griz country....;)

GTBuzz 06-24-2003 01:19 PM

RE: How many carry an..?

It' s also illegal in Georgia; however, I know quite a few guys that carry a revolver loaded with snakeshot just in case.

No handgun...but I do carry some hardcore pepper
spray. Saw a loose rotweiler (sp?) in my neck of
the woods[:o], for such a remote area I was
suprised. To be quite honest...it scared the sh@*
out me, decided it was time to have something
besides the 3 arrows in my quiver;).

I don' t use a hand gun for black or brown bears, so I doubt I would take one along while deer or boar hunting.

I carry a my 45 every time I go out, you got to round here.

Lots of feral house cats running around – there big, there nasty – and they will not hesitate to shred up a new summit seat. Let alone nip at your feet. When I hunt close to the Hamptons there is a big problem with wild dogs, poodles and terriers mostly. The nastiest little things you would want to find in the woods. There small but a real pain in the arse when your bow-hunting, almost lost a few good friends to them.

We don’t take chances here in the Burbs – It’s a dangerous world out there!!!

Here in SD the prairie dogs can get pretty big - they' ve been known to overthrow entire small towns - and - you know - they carry Monkey Pox so this year not only are we carrying side arms but we' re also carrying .223' s - so we can shoot them from afar w/o the risk of getting close to Monkey Pox.

BUT - I shoot a BOWTECH PATRIOT so I needn' t carry the .223 - I can hit a prairie dog in the 10 ring at 300 yards.;)

Red Hawk,

I asked this same question last fall on this forum.
It caused such an uproar that my topic was locked.
Newbies came out of the woodwork on that thread. :)
Some who replied to that topic have never posted since.
I always carry a Sig P220 ST .45 when I bowhunt or go to the woods.
I am going to be straight and tell you it' s for human predators.
Not, lions, tigers, and bears, like everyone else pretends, lol.
No, I don' t trust strangers in the woods and will not let someone approach me if I don' t know him.
Who wants to squeal like a pig ? LOL.
If that' s paranoid, so be it.
Like a cop friend once told me...
" It' s better to be caught with it than without it" .
Just ask Ned Beatty. ;)

I used to when I lived in Virginia. A couple of rounds of snake shot then onto the hollow points. Too far out into the boonies not to.
Since I moved up here to Pa, I have left my sidearm at home.

Illegal in bowseason in Texas also. So no, I don' t do it.
BUT night time pig hunts will find either my conceal carry 9 in my fanny pack, or my scoped .44 mag in my fourwheelers gear box!!

It' s illegal here in tennessee but I care one for wild dogs. I' ve been attacked and if I had not had a gun, I' d been in a mess. I keep it concealed and wouldn' t use it for anything but self defense.

it' s illegal here in Fla. and I don' t need one.I do carry one in the truck, but not in the woods.
we have some real buttholes in the game commission here, and they will take you to jail.they don' t write tickets for that, they just take your gun and you go to jail.

RE: How many carry an..?

I have before even though it was technically illegal. I hunt on some public land that I access by boat . If you feel like attacking me for carrying a gun ...go ahead , but like Sagittarius ....I carried it because of people getting robbed and cars getting broke into near the area I was hunting. Seems like in some rural areas the drug user type folks have been driving down to remote boat launches and robbing people at gunpoint or breaking into their vehicles. I typically may be the only person using the launch on the days I hunt and it is not unlikely for me to be the only one coming in at night.
Now as far as hunting goes.......I would take a bow over a pistol any day. ' Cause I can' t hit squat over about 15 yrds with a pistol , but I can shoot out to 60 yrds accurately with my bow all day long.

I think pistols should be allowed for personal protection.
I guess I should' ve mentioned that I don' t carry one 95% of the time, just when I go to a couple of places that I' m worried about needing it.

RE: How many carry an..?

Illegal here in Iowa also, so no I don' t. The game wardens in this part of the country carry guns and will also take you to jail and take your gun as well. I have a concealed weapons permit but the game laws specifically state I can' t carry it while bowhunting. I' ve no problem with that. I feel secure with my bow and arrows. Besides, there is legislation trying to make it a felony to carry a weapon (handgun) without a permit. If convicted, I' d lose my right to vote and also lose my right to legally own a firearm.

ROTFLMAO!!!
Just like treeclimber said it is illegal to do this in FL. However I do carry concealed, and I have been caught. My S&W 9mm was confiscated and I had to post a $1,000.00 bond so I could go home. I do have a CCW permit and when I went to court the charge was dropped. My lawyer pointed out that Fl. was a right to carry state, and it was an unlawfull search and seizure because my weapon was concealed and not visible. It took me 3 more weeks to get my sidearm back.

Now the GW who busted me always asks me why I think I need one. See the quote above.

Man, you guys make me glad I live where I do. I`ve had problems with dogs, and I`ve had problems with idiots but never and I mean never have I ever thought that I needed anything to protect myself with. Man i`ve drove truck across your great country and although there are many places I won`t go at night, I never thought the danger was any greater than one of our bigger cities. Guess I was wrong.:)

buck-i,

I wonder if you would feel the same way if some good ol boys met you in the woods, robbed you, nearly beat the life out of you. and left you for dead.
Or just shot you dead period.
How would you feel about that ?
No offense, just a legitimate question .

It just sounds funny:D Poodles and terriers?[:o] Wouldn' t anything bigger than a size 13 be overkill?

The only thing I worry about up north is the wolves. Their becoming way over populated. When I walk thru the woods I' ll cary a single arrow in my right hand. Whatever it is that attacks me is at least gonna have some scars on it' s face from my broadhead.
I would imagine that if you swatted any of those ankle biters in the nose with a broadhead tipped arrow it would help teach them a lesson.

Turk_Man,

Well there are some weed growers that don' t take kindly to you coming too close to their fields.
Some of you guys need to pull your head out of the sand.
If you can be robbed on the streets, what makes you think it can' t happen in the woods ?
The way of the world today!
A friend of mine had his deer taken at gun point back in 89' and my cousin and uncle had a Mexican standoff with some hunters over a deer in 94' .
I posted this same information om my handgun thread but lots of guys thought I was lying and just wanted to start a sensation.
Well, that it did.
But both are true accounts, believe it or not.

Illegal here in Illinois and I don' t!! I have had groups of dogs, packs of coyotes and other hunters around me......never once felt threatened! My broadhead tipped arrow and skinning knife is all I need. Where I hunt I know who else might be hunting the area.

Some of you obviously have not been exposed to some of the poverty strickin rural areas of the country.
What........there are people without jobs ? Crack?Booze? Welfare? Foodstamps? No law enforcement? No Gamewarden in the county? Can it be ...........???

Nope ....... Just you cruising into a great hunting area with your blinders on.......in your new $35k truck, a bunch of high dollar gear, and a pocket full of money to last you through the weekend. Wake up !! ;)

CBM....:)

I have never carried one, as I' ve never felt the need to. However, that said...if I did feel like I needed to carry for personal protection, I' d do it... regardless of whether or not it was allowed. Hopefully I' ll never be in that situation.

Turk_man 06-26-2003 06:25 AM

RE: How many carry an..?

As I said early I`m still shocked. I will also add that under no condition would I shoot a man over a dead deer, hell I wouldn`t point a gun at a person over a dead deer because remember that the winner of a mexican standoff is the one that pulls the trigger first. I have taken a deer away from some trespassers and although they were pissed I still never feared for my safety. If the area I hunted had those kind of problems then i`d go somewhere else and if I lived there I know who I was dealing with and call the law.

Rack-attack, LMAO :D Feral house cats, poodles and terriers.

And all you carry is a 45. You might want to think about carrying a 12 gauge.

No Guys, I am Serious!!!!!

Some of my best spots border on 10 – 20 Million dollar homes of the Rich and Famous. They have huge parties all the time and I guess they let their pooches get all cocained up. These little suckers run the woods like a packs of Wolves. Have you ever seen a pack of poodles???? – obviously not, if you question my use of a 45.

Scariest moment of my life was when I looked down at the base of my tree to see that chowowa looking up at me. All drugged up and crazy eyed. He stared straight into my eyes and said “Wonder if you taste like a Taco”[:o][:-]

Do I feel lucky living where I do. Been tromping through the woods around here for better than 40 years. Yup, I' ve run across some smart a$$ trespassers but knew they wouldn' t rape, rob, torture, or kill me.[>:] I' m afraid I' d have to give up and move if it came to carrying a gun just so I could go bowhunting.[:' (]

Christine B 06-26-2003 10:45 PM

RE: How many carry an..?

CG, FYI.....they changed the regs last year! If you have a legal CCDW in West Virginia ie: license/permit you are allowed to carry with not only a bow but rifle....... I always have had and will have my trusty .357mag at my side regardless. And yes, I am 100% legal!:) A good idea if you have your permit even if hunting on your own land would be to have a DL size laminated copy of your CCW to carry in the holster of your carry weapon. Just a thought.....
I only hunt my own acreage but.....you just never know what you may run into.......

Its not what you harvest...
Its what you learn...

You know I have never worryed about anything out where I hunt. Not about hogs, cats, cows and not really snakes. Till last year.
We found out that someone had been using the area that our lease was in for a moble crack lab. Including our lease.
With this info and a few words from the DPS, I do carry now when I go out.
Never know what a hog, cat, cow or a snake will do on crack[:o]

Funny stuff here. How do poodles taste? Got a permit to carry but never do cause I don' t need the weight. It' s illegal during bow and my buddy carries a small 38 but my uncle taught me to kill with a knife and it works fine in a pinch. All this panty droppin cracker attack stuff is BS. The take your deer stuff might happen but so what. You guys wouldn' t point the gun at someone unless they were pointing at you or it' s prison time even in the great open carry state of AZ.

You canadians have nothing to worry about since the socialists took yer guns away so keep that pocket knife sharp:)

Funny you should say thet - I have on a few occasions ran into little farms of planted pot in some of my areas. Was actually relieved ,after finding these well cut paths and seeing a truck in the area that they were pot growers. Thought I had some more hunting competition in the area:D:D

Bring a knife to a gunfight? That would be stupid.

...All this panty droppin cracker attack stuff is BS...
Now, I will admit I wouldn' t get raped while hunting, but murdered is a different story. Here in Fl. in the ' 80s there were probably 10 hunters murdered in one year the next year a few more were killed. I do not remember what year it was. Maybe my 9mm wouldn' t be comparable to a 30.06 but it would even the field alot more than a knife! BTW the movie Deliverance was a TRUE story

...You canadians have nothing to worry about since the socialists took yer guns away so keep that pocket knife sharp:)
Not all guns in Canada are gone. Some people are still allowed to have rifles for hunting...or am I wrong? AND what about the guns criminals had before the ban?
