RE: Any one ever have problems with mechanicals?
Granted he is a profesional hunter and practices way more than mortal men. I' m 2 for 2 with the spitfires. This year I hope to try the scorpions and the snypers. |
RE: Any one ever have problems with mechanicals?
i used snypers last year 2x2 but 1 deer i hit double lung hit a rib going in the tip rolled over still a pass threw the second deer was almost straight down hit rib going in threw the heart out the bottom tip was bent over not as much as first one but still bent . not impressed with exit wound but entrance wound was very big. i think the tip is to fragile i' m not going to use them this year there seems to be a problem thats going to happen with this head. untill they put a tri cut head on them i won' t risk a shot with this heads again. the tri cut head would make this a great head.

RE: Any one ever have problems with mechanicals?
An old long time friend of mine who has been active in archery hunting and equipment since the 1950' s had lunch with a very well known " pro" about a year ago and discussed this topic. Typically for large game he will not use mechanicals due to the possiblity of the arrow " flipping over" if the animal is on a pretty good angle, whereas a cut on impact tip will do just that, cut the hair, then the hide.
I have always felt a cut on impact blade was the best, most basic solution, and after hearing this, well, let' s say I' m going to keep using them. Many advantages to the mechanicals though....to each his own I guess. |
RE: Any one ever have problems with mechanicals?
My last 9 bucks were harvested with Rocket Sidewinders. Personally I don' t know why anyone would take the time to tune a fixed blade broadhead when you can just screw on a good mechanical and shoot just like your field tips.

RE: Any one ever have problems with mechanicals?
If I hadn' t seen it myself I would have never believed it.
Spring of ' 01 & ' 02 I kill gobblers clean with Spitfire Gobbler Getters - no issues - both went 2 yards. Spring of ' 03 I shoot a broadside longbeard at about 5 yards. The shot is exactly where I want it. He rolls over & is flopping violently - as I reach for the blind zipper he gets up & takes off running up the riverbank with my arrow hanging out of him. I get enough sight of him to see that I got just a few inches - maybe 2 - of penetration. There was very little sign & I couldn' t keep up with him as he ran up the hill (SUPER STEEP INCLINE). As I reach the crest he' s no where to be seen. I find very little sign & never recover the bird or my arrow. The next day the SAME thing happens to my dad - but this time his arrow falls out of the bird & shows just a tick of blood past the broadhead (on the shaft). He got roughly 1.5 inches of penetration too. The next week I shot the standard spitfire 100 grains & harvested a bird. I' ve never used mechanicals on anything other than turkey - I won' t use them next year. (FYI - I was shooting a ~60# bow & ~445 gr arrow @ roughly 230fps) |
RE: Any one ever have problems with mechanicals?
No problems here!! I' m another big Rocket fan and have been using their 100gr HammerHeads and Steel heads with good results!! Accuracy can' t be equalled by a fixed bladed head in my opinion. Close enough doesn' t cut it!!;)
