who uses a rangefinder when huntin
i posted a thread in the gear review asking what are the best inexpensive rangefinders out, but i didn' t get much response so i was wandering how many of you use a rangefinder when bowhunting? and which one do you use?

My Yardage Pro 500 stays in my Back pack! I usually take a few readings when I sit for a hunt But when moose hunting These things are worth their weight in gold Those MEESE are sooooooo big That they will through your yardage judgement off I still always practice yardage Guesstimates But when I have time to use it while hunting I do! RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
My Yardage Pro 500 stays with me and often it serves as my binoculars. All of my animals have been less than 30 yards and I range that pretty accurately by eye.
I was thinking that your initial posting was regarding a SPECIFIC brand of range finder. |
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I do and it' s one of the older ones.I thought about updating to the 500 but, really don' t need to. I use the Crooked Horn Bino System and wear it around my neck when hunting.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I always carry mine unless I forget it. Bushnell scout tucked in my shirt pocket.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I would never bow hunt with out one. Yardage Pro 800. I would expect to see more replys from the ethically concerned hunters. If you hunt without one you might as well be taking a 60 yard hail marry. If you think your eye is that calibrated you must be legends in your own minds. Im sure this will stir up some @#*!. Oh well.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Iuse mine all the time its only fair to the animals
we hunt!!!:) |
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I just picked up one of the optical range finders. For about $75 you can get one of the Ranging range finders. Not nearly as slick as the new laser types, but I have been pleasantly suprised at the accuracy of mine.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
95% of the hunting I do is with a bow and I always
have it with me. I' ve had my Bushnell Yardage Pro 400 since 1997 and it has served me well[:-]. |
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I use the yardage pro 400. I climb into my stand and shoot a few distances around my stand before I start the hunt.
|
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I have a cheap optical ranging range finder. Max range is 75 yds, but that more than enough for my bowhunting. I check things out when I first set up, then put it away so I don' t play with it.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I take mine with me esecialy the first time I hunt a stand to range trees and stuff on the ground , I use an optilogic tilt compensator , I think nikon has the same range finder but calls it someting else .
|
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I have a Nikon 400 and love it but I' ve never ranged in an animal with it. I will shoot a couple ranges when I first get in my treestand to verify yardage.
Capt Ray, dont be silly. Of course people can judge yardage accurately with their eyes alone, it just takes practice. Shooting without using a range finder is far from a " Hail Marry" . 3D shoots are the best way to find out, I shoot in about two a month. |
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Yes, I use one all the time. It is really interest what 30 yards looks like on open land compared to thick woods, or across a revine. - very deceiving.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Last year I went ther cheaper route and Bought the Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport, It doesn' t have all the bells and wistles like scan mode and rain mode like the others but it has served me very well so far and I know it will always be with me when i' m in the woods. I usually take some readings when I sit down, I usually try to take readings off of odd looking trees so I can remember them or if it is a stand I use frequently I range distances around the stand with the rangefinder and mark it with colored ribbon that corresponds to the colors of my pins.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
i use a ranging tlr75 its inexpensive and as long as you keep it calibrated it works just fine! when i get in my tree stand i check yartdages of some trees near where the deer should come from and you know how that goes! just to have an idea of which pin to use so it' s less thought when the moment of truth arises;)

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Yeah I carry one but in the last 7 years I have yet to use it on any of the elk or mulies I' ve taken.....I had one opportunity to use it on my nicest mulie buck but guess what....I forgot it at the truck.....I must be a " legend in my own mind" because I' ve judged yardage fairly well so far.....

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I USE A YARDAGE PRO 400 ON ANY STAND I HAVE NOT HUNTED PREVIOUSLY.VERY USEFUL!
|
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Like bushnells advertisement said " it is 33 yards to a trophy but it is 30 yards to digging your broadhead out of an oak. " i use the compact 800

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Yardage Pro 400 and I never leave home without it........
|
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I use the Leica LRF 1200 and wouldn' t be without it.
|
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I have a Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport that I bought two years ago. I use it both before and during the hunt...for peace of mind if nothing else. I had owned a Tasco 600 model that I found worked very well. However, it was quite a bit bigger and too bulky to practically use as much as I wanted to.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I always have my rangefinder with me while hunting. I currently use a bushnell yardage pro scout.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I use a Bushnell Yardage Pro 600. I take it hunting with me.
When my husband and I hang our stands one of use will sit the the stand and call out the shot areas and shooting lanes to the other on the ground and the ground person will then do a little trimming . The One of us in the stand will then range the shots and the one on the ground will mark the shot distances, I prefer to use reflective tacks to mark the distance to certain trees( if its 30 yards I use 3 tacks , 20 yards 2 tacks etc,to mark it). When we dont have time to prerange an area I will upon climbing into my stand take readings in the areas where I have shots around me. I shoot a weekly in indoor league and four different 3D shoots a month , but still find yardage estimation to be my biggest hurdle thus comes into play the range finder. I find my Rangefinder to be a very valuable hunting tool.:) |
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Kind of like American Express. Don' t leave home without it. I always carry mine regardless bow or gun. Bushnell Yardage Pro 600
|
RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
I use the Nikon 400, it works great for bowhunting. If you are looking for a dual purpsoe though this wouldn' t be the best choice. Your target has to be fairly large to get a reading past three hundred yards. It won' t rannge an antelope much over two hundred, and deer over 250, haven' t tried it on anything big like moose or elk. It never fails from 40 yards in so it suits my purpose fine.

RE: who uses a rangefinder when huntin
Bushnell Yardage Pro 600 -Use it for Bow and Gun.
