It's Raccoon. It may have been injured or sick.

What ever it is, I would say its rabid.. for it to not move and just stay like that, I would say its on its last legs of being rabid.

Wow.. The color doesnt look like a raccoon to me.. But who knows. Badger was my first thought.. but I've never seen a badger in the wild..

Sniper151 11-21-2009 04:57 PM

Looks like the back of a groundhog to me

That's a racoon. 100% positive. In all honesty I have seen them do this before. This is a last chance defense mechanism for them. You must have caught him by suprise. It's not rabid or it would have not been trying to hide. When treed by dogs they will do this a lot in the tree to try to hide themselves from you lights. Seen it a hundred times if I've seen it once.

X2 he is just hiding from you. Thinks you wont see him if he can't see you. They are bashful critters some times and funny like this. He is not sick. Just hiding. WCL

Thanks guys. I was kind of thinking Coon too, but I have never seen one play dead like that.

rogerstv 11-23-2009 09:12 AM

Why didn't u poke it w/a stick?

ksfowler 11-23-2009 09:18 AM

At first glance I would say raccoon. But I would not rule out groundhog.

cwanty03 11-23-2009 12:04 PM

not badger! (wisconsin-ite here), not a fox, looks 2 small 2 be a coon mbut might be. i would say some sort of ground hog or somethin

HoosierHunter79 11-25-2009 10:34 AM

Thas a coon.

StraightArrowNY 11-25-2009 10:42 AM

My first thought was racoon as well. All of those sticks in the picture made me laugh out loud. You've got pretty good aim w/ a stick!

teedub31 11-26-2009 05:46 AM

I saw a possum do the same thing in my yard. I even went up and poked it wit a stick a few times. I honestly though it had been sick and died in my yard. An hour or so later I watched it uncurl and walk away.

gutshot 11-26-2009 07:01 AM

I'm guessing groundhog.

Pope94/IA 11-26-2009 07:07 AM

Coon, no doubt about it. Looks everything like a coon. I dont think groundhogs have as long hair as a coon and the colors of their hides are a bit diffearnt. I have only seen a few groundhogs in the wild but I have shot and seen many coons so I can definetly say thats a coon.

my7pointmonster 11-26-2009 01:55 PM

I thought it was a hedgehog

Ryan.

Raccoon. While bowhunting, I shot a raccoon. Bad part was I only shot it in the foot and cut his toes off. He just sat there. So, I nocked a G5 small game head and thumped him. He just sat there, licking his wound. Finally after 2 hours I got down and KO'd him with a log.
