Only second bowkill for me and I'm pumped!
This happened on 10/17, but thought I would post it up.
Weather was perfect for La - calm, low of 47, dry slight wind out of NW. Got settled in about 45 minutes before dawn. No sooner did I get comfortable I heard deer around me - one swam canal and heard footsteps from woods. At first light I saw a big doe and large fawn (probably button buck) feeding slowly towards me with the wind in my favor. They turned the corner according to plan and were getting close to my 7-8 foot shooting lane. They were previously moving slow and feeding and I couldn't see through the cover, so I didn't draw (mistake 1). When I finally saw the nanny she was already into my shooting lane walking with a purpose (but not on alert). I drew quickly and (dammit) the peep was blurry due to somewhat lowlight, I quickly pulled my head away and settled back in without the peep (blurred through it), and let the arrow go just as she was leaving the lane. It sounded like a good hit, she kicked her back legs and crashed into the woods, but then I saw her stop and start walking - uh oh. I waited a while, got off the stand and found the arrow - blood and a definite gutshot.
I sat for a bit enjoying the morning, met up with my dad and decided to look at the trail. Even though a gutshot, blood was splattered all over the place and we found her dead about 50 yards from where I shot her.
She is a nice 135 lb. probably 3.5 year old doe. Lessons learned: (1) getting on stand early was key that morning (she was milling around), (2) draw at first opportunity, and (3) mouth bleat a moving deer. I've always been taught to be quiet, and I see everyone on tv do it, but sometimes it looks like ridiculous overkill (especially when a buck is slowly grazing at 20 yards). But in this case, it would have been the thing to do, and probably caused that shot to be a double lung shot. I got lucky that my expandable (Innerloc EXP - 2 for 2) wreaked havoc.
Now gotta get a nice buck. That same morning after shooting her I saw 2 bucks - a small 8 and 4 point (still in batchelor here due to late rut) work their way to 125 yards from me.
What a morning.
