how do you guys get prepared?
whats your system of scent control before the hunt?
|
Scent Away, coon urine on boots, up in a tree, and good to go.
|
Check wind direction and then decide where I will hunt accordingly.

sounds good. also, whats your system before you get to the field (still at home)
|
I just put my hunting clothes out in the sun/wind for a day or 2 before I hunt, and get up high enough in the tree. I don't think I have been busted because of my scent yet, although I am still quite new to this.
I also try to not get sweaty heading into the stand...better to be cold walking in and warm when in the stand. |
I spray down head to toe with scent killer. I wash all my clothes with scent free/killer soap. I take a bath in the scent killer body wash. i store all my clothes in a tot. Then change at the field. I have had deer down wind of me and not even think i was there. one time it was two does and the next 4 does and a button buck

amen to that.. ever since i became SUPER disciplined about my scent and invested in some scent blocker gear.. my sighting on deer and other odd animals has quadrupled.. we are talking about deer conducting a deer union meeting 20 ft underneath my feet,, talk about the feeling of being pinned to your stand... |
I wet my finger and hold it up to determine wind direction. Then I pick a spot based on wind direction. The only scent control I do is so I don't have to sit there and smell myself.
|
Clothes are washed in baking soda and hung on the line to dry and air out. I shower with scent away. Usually put clothes on when I get to my spot (definitely when I take the wifes vehicle, I don't want to smell like a french fry in the stand) Play the wind when I get out there.

Wash clothes with Dead Down Wind, dry with DDW...wash with scent control before doing the switch and removal from the drier. Watch the weather night before, and morning to determine gameplan. Shower with DDW,....and put on base layer scent control. Once parked, spray head to toe scent control on base layer, and then put on the outer layer. Take one last swig of coffee, lite up a smoke, and walk in.

Wash clothes in Scent Killer detergent. Dry with scent-free dryer sheets. They come out of the drier into giant Zip-lock bags. I change completely in the field, and spray down as I add layers. It may be overkill, and it's definitely not fool-proof, but it makes me more comfortable, so that piece of mind is worthwhile. Even after all of that, I still try my best to hunt according to the wind.

Last few years it has been wash everything, store in a bag with earth wafers, spray down with scent killer, use coon urine, hunt the wind advantage if possible.
This year, I worked most all day, picked my clothes up off the laundry room floor where they had been the last 2 days, use the same socks and shoes, wear clothes to the field in vehicle, thermacell fuel cell empty so spray on some OFF to repel skeeters, walk in and get a little sweaty, stop and spray vanilla extract on a weed, spray nilla on self, pat on face like cologne, spray on fallen log, climb into stand, about sundown have seven Does come in, all upwind@ 20 yards and closing, 4 go on by, 3 enter woods to smell log. 10 yards now, all had stopped to smell the weed, no flags, no snorts, nothing. The weed is gone now, they ate it! Same thing the evening i shot my buck except i had the wind in my favor that evening. I am nearly convinced I dont need anything except pure vanilla extract. oh, also on another hunt this year, it was hot, i was sweaty, just getting into a stand when 3 Does came thru, I hadnt pulled my bow up yet, they came thru about 10 yards from me, got up wind, they never spooked, but they were sure checking the air, watched them walk on off cautiously, no snorts |

Up until a couple years ago I showered in scent free soap right before the hunt, stripped down to my drawrs when I got to my hunting area & got dressed in my camo which never went inside. sprayed down before and after I got to the stand ,and peed in a bottle. Now I just change my boots and jacket when I get to my area and climb at least 20 ft high if possible ,pee out the tree too. see just as many deer, now. I still do the same ritual of rubbing an apple core, after eating it, on the tree as a cover scent but I think its just a good luck thing at this point.
