Small car, how to transport a deer?? Help plz

Hey guys, I own a 2003 chevy cavalier, its the only thing I have, I don't have a truck I can use or anything. So my question is this, I usually only hunt when I can go with my gf's dad since he has a truck, but I am tired of only being able to go when he can. So do any of you out there know a good way for me to be able to transport a deer if I hunt by myself and shoot one? I don't want to strap it to my hood or anything either, and it would be very difficult to get it in the trunk I think. Thanks

-Joe

Line the trunk with a tarp. Your only other option is to strap it to the roof (I don't recommend that!).

Worry about transporting it after its on the ground. Go hunting when you want by yourself-then should you shoot one call your gf's dad or someone else to help you go get it. If you are worried about leaving your dead deer in the woods for a while til you get help cover it up with sticks and leaves to hide it. I do it all the time so i can go get my deer draggin cart.

1/4 it and put it in the trunk. I've loaded a buck into a pontiac sunbird 2 door. Where there is a will there is a way.

If you know anyone in law enforcement or goverment work, they can get you some body bags that work great. REal heavy plastic material. This is what I used when using my camary. I have put ice in there any no leakage. Figured its good enough for a person, why not a deer? I have put an 160lb deer in there. But not sure if I could put much more.

BigCountry!! Your one sick dude. JK!! ;) That's all I need is to be motoring down the Mass pike with a body bag hanging out of the wife's accord.
I do agree with rh about crossing that bridge when you get to it. In 1986 I strapped one across the roof of my Toyota and off I went. I got just as many thumbs up as I did middle fingers.

New ones don't look like they did in Vietnam:s12:

they just look like a 8ft long long hefty bag just 3-5 times thicker, that seal at one end. Trust me, it works great. I need to get some more.

tmontgo1 10-07-2009 03:01 PM

i got rid of my old pickup and i have a car now, i can usually find a buddy with a truck pretty easily but the best way is i agree, line the truck with a tarp, or wrap the deer in a tarp.

Well...here's how it worked in my civic! I recommend using a rubber mat in your trunk though...and don't leave the skull cap with brain parts in your trunk for a week without a bag either...from what I hear it's hard to get rid of that smell! :confused0024:

nysmoker 10-07-2009 03:36 PM

I guess you could skin and quarter it if you dont want to strap it to the hood and getting it in the car is that big a problem .... I remember when i was a teenager ... i use to sneak my shotgun in my duffle bag and ride the school buss to a place i use to hunt and have my pops pick me up when he was done work if i killed a deer.God ... now a days id be put in jail for that ....

halfbakedi420 10-07-2009 03:41 PM

coupole smaller coolers and quarter it up, maybe sum heavy trash bags fer the head if i were keepin it.

I used to do the same thing with my bow, I even had permission from the principal to do it. Like you said, today you'd be in jail and all over the news.

As far as the deer goes, why not just sit him up in the passenger seat. Just remember, click it or ticket. :happy0001:

lmao klik it or ticket

In ohio, the deer has to be whole upon checking it i believe. skining it and quartering it out sounds like a viable option otherwise....hmm
I have learned the best way to transport em though (as i have a 2000 cavalier) is to know a friend with a truck :D

dprsdhunter 10-07-2009 04:02 PM

Is it possible to install a hitch on a cavalier??? If so you could use a SMALL trailer.
I have seen smaller cars with hitches installed. Just a thought.

mauser06 10-07-2009 04:42 PM

like the others said, worry about it when the time comes...surely someone with a truck would likely be able to help you get it home...

if not, the trunk works. like the others said, a tarp in the trunk will work...difficult to get it in...but possible...put it on a hillside and back upto it if you have to...

i drove a 93 Duster and hauled deer home in it...though the seat went down so it made it REAL easy....

but, ya'll might call BS on this...but my first deer ever, a large mature doe, got hauled home in a GEO METRO! no joke..thats 100% true...funny part was we pulled in the drive way...last day of the season..dads buddy took me as he worked that morning...mom comes out and says "huh wheres all the deer?? in the woods still like always??" i said nope! its in the car!! she couldnt believe it...

Lol , u can proably put a hitch on it but I wouldnt recommend hauling any kind of trailers, little cars arent made for that. Midsized cars u can get away with it. But when I did summer work for the state road we used one of those racks to get dead deer off the road and they are nice.

Big Z 10-07-2009 05:12 PM

That's why you drive a cadillac, more trunk space :D :D

joemr1288 10-07-2009 06:07 PM

WOW, thanks for all of the help guys, I really appreciate it. You guys gave me some good ideas. I was looking online and found something called a game bag, not sure if anyone has heard of them or used them? If so how do they work? do they leak or what? Thanks again for all of the response!

-Joe

bigbulls 10-07-2009 06:17 PM

joemr1288, it's not as hard as you think. I have a 2000 Saturn SL2 (4 door) and can, and have, get two people, two climbers, two bows, two back packs, and at least one deer in that car.

The climbers slide down to the floor between the back seat and front seats, skinny side down on the floor board and cables up and over the rear seats.

Two bows and packs go in the back seats under the cables of the stands.

Two does or one good sized buck can fit in the trunk if you squeeze them in just right.

solocamcan 10-07-2009 06:24 PM

I had a 1997 cavalier 4 cyl. that I had a hitch on and pulled a 14ft jon boat around...thats what I would do If I were you, buy a small utility trailer and install a hitch.

Hurricanespg 10-07-2009 06:44 PM

I just quarter them up, throw them in my backpack and put it all in the trunk.
I can fit two peoples hunting gear and two deer in a Dodge Neon.

I believe the game bag is really made for like backcountry hunters who carry animals long distances...I believe their only real purpose is keeping flies, dirt and debris off the carcass so it doesn't get tainted by this stuff...I may be wrong but I was looking into them for this exact purpuse..before I just decided to put my deer in the trunk...and that's what I found.

nromaker 10-08-2009 12:01 AM

buddy of minehauled his home in the trunk of his beemer. i would do the trailer hitch or ask santa for a pickup:s1:

wis_bow_huntr 10-08-2009 03:00 AM

I have an 06 Cobalt and have no problem stuffing a deer in the trunk. I had a 98 Neon. I had no issues stuffing a dee rin the trunk. Just get yourself some tarps and youre all set :)

UncleNorby 10-08-2009 03:49 AM

I brought my first deer home in the trunk of my friend's mother's 1980-ish Tercel. We had some plastic, and also had large trash bags and duct tape. It was a bit of a pain, but it worked.

Steve863 10-08-2009 04:53 AM

As others have said. I don't think you will have a problem putting an average sized deer into a trunk of a small car. Before rigor mortis sets in a deer can quite easily be manipulated to fit into most any vehicles trunk.

Good news 2011 will bring in automated check in and that means quarter and pack. I for one think it's long over due. Hunt other places that have it and it's great. No more draging over who knows what for who knows how far.

You can do it as soon as your standing over it or with in the next 24 hrs. It should some how included filling out a tag and distorting in some way for a permanent mark.

If Mi doesn't have it make some noise to get it.

nodog 10-08-2009 05:03 AM

Putting a deer in a trunk is doable, but one thing to be concern with is the care of the meat. Packing it in there could trap heat and cause the meat to begin to go bad. Rapid heat lose is key to great tasting game; the reason you see cleaned game with the legs proped open. I always pack the cavity with a bag of ice if it's on the warm side, lasts for days that way, kind of messy though.

buckeyehntr5 10-08-2009 05:25 AM

Fill some empty 2 liter pepsi or coke bottles with water and throw in the freezer. After being frozen, throw them in a cooler before leaving to go hunting. After getting a deer throw the 2 liters in the cavity before loading in to your trunk. Should keep the body cavity cold until returning home. Plus they are reusable!

PreacherTony 10-08-2009 03:54 PM

Do what I do ... put it ontop of the trunk/backglass ..... why hasn't ANYONE mentioned this?:confused0024:

loogout1 10-08-2009 06:14 PM

Someone already mentioned, but I'll say it again. I have a 2003 subaru legacy wagon. Became a pain in the ass last year after hoisting my 5th big doe into the back of the car. Couldnt afford to buy a pick up this year so..... I went online to JC Whitney and bought a bolt on 1 1/4 receiver, $89, then went to cabelas and bought a game carrier, $65, that slides right in to receiver. Already used it twice this year. Its the way to go!

bigbulls 10-08-2009 06:23 PM

because the thread starter specifically said he did not want to do this.

i was on Quantico base today and a marine pulled a doe out of his back hatch of the camaro he was driving. He only had some trash bags, it was a small doe so it fit! I image if you got blood or other things, it may stink if you dont clean it out.

I've heard about the deer there, the glove box could be used as well. :)

jd24_1 10-08-2009 11:34 PM

Go to wally world and get 2 tarps stash em in your trunk and if you harvest one place one in trunk wrap deer in the other and your good to go! My dads truck had a flat one deer season so we took the backup a 1988 chevette we had 5 hunters and all our gear in it!!! NOt to mention a 8pt and a 7pt strapped on top!!!!! Got to get that picture posted so everyone gets a good laugh!!!!

jd24_1 10-08-2009 11:42 PM

Nodog cant wait to be able to quarter one and pack it out. Either im getting old or the deer getting bigger! Yhea id say your right about tagging one then too the way i take it is you call in or get on pc and they give you a number wich i would say you then write it on temporary tag and your good to go from there.
