Another point I would like to add. For tracking jobs the old saying "three's a crowd" really applies. You need to formulate a plan for tracking your deer and who you can rely on for help "before" you go hunting. The most successful tracking teams are usually made up of two good friends that work together well and that have a plan of attack and a system they use. I hate it when I'm called to a mob scene to find a deer that the crowd has lost. Do yourself a favor and make a pact with a good friend that you can depend on to help you out and that you can help with your tracking jobs this season. If you feel compelled to call a crowd in to help wait until you've found the deer and you need help dragging it out.

I agree with you 100%. I have hunted with alot of people. Some of these people have been hunting 40 years. Just because they have hunted that long does not make them good trackers what so ever. I only ask a few people that I trust to help. To many times I have seen just what you wrote. To many people walking all over the place destroying sign! Not to cut on gun hunters but they are usually the ones that are not very good at trailing deer. Though I have several friends that bow hunt that could not find corn in the middle of a corn field!

I think you need just one more good flashlight in there. Just Kiddng, glad to see someone is prepared to spend time to do what is needed to recover an animal.

I also have a small kit that stays in my truck, a couple of flash lights, spot light, batteries and orange marking ribbon.
This year me and a couple of buddies are testing a spray we came up with over the summer. We call it bloodtracker spray it turns orange when it comes in contact with the protiens & ammino acids.

I've been doing volunteer tracking on the local Navy Base for 20 years, and this year I will have an assistant:

I've been training my pup, Ruby (her daddy is Jeanneney's Billy), all summer long with frozen deer blood and frozen deer legs from last season. Still a bit too early to tell if she'll be worth spittle. She has done well on trails I've laid that are 24 hrs old, so I have my hopes.

Ruby looks great! and I know with John and Jolanta's help in her training she will be fine. Won't be long now and she'll get to work the real thing.

[QUOTEMost important thing I have found is to be patient and take your time. Give the animal ample time to expire. If he is dead already... he'll still be dead an hour or two from now.

Mark your last blood.... and maintain a trail! Things look a lot different in the dark and with your eyes on the ground most of the time, you can end up very lost very fast... make sure you tell someone where you are going in the event you do get lost. ][/QUOTE]

That's just good, solid advice. Only thing I can add to that is try to make a killer shot. We all have strenths and weaknesses. Just try to be patient, and make the best shot you can. The only shot, is not necessarily a good shot. That's where a lot of trouble begins. GMMAT, you're like CSI Greensboro! I told the wife, I disappear in the woods, call you! Impressive.
