what distances do you all practice out to?

Just wondering what is the "average" distance fellow bowmen (and women) practice to?

I am a firm believer on long distance practice, If I can put 10 out of 10 arrows in a little black hole target at 80yds I should never ever miss a shot at 40yds :)

907Alaska 09-01-2009 10:44 PM

I practice out to 60...but would never take that shot on anything

peakrut 09-01-2009 10:44 PM

50 yards but only will shoot a deer out to 35-40.

BUCKMARK 09-01-2009 11:33 PM

Thirty yards is the max shot I will take...

Rhody Hunter 09-02-2009 01:25 AM

I'll practice to 40

Todd1700 09-02-2009 01:37 AM

I practice out to 55 yards. I would never take a shot at a whitetail from that distance while hunting but if you can sharpen your form to the point that hitting your target kill zone is no problem from 55 yards then it makes 25 yards seem like a slam dunk even in actual hunting situations.

nchawkeye 09-02-2009 03:03 AM

25 yards...

I agree with this.

RTA47 09-02-2009 04:53 AM

On the gound i may practice out 50-60?

When i practice from my stand .
I practice from around 5 to 30yrds, i try not to take long shots on game i try to keep it 25 and less.
Over the yrs my ave shot on deer has been about 15yrds.

triggertrav 09-02-2009 05:06 AM

I love shooting 60-70 yards - by no means would i take that shot on an animal, but fun to shoot, wait watch wait - bam . drilled it. (actual time)

BvrHunter 09-02-2009 05:19 AM

Practice out to 50.....hunting no futher than 35-40

wallhangr 09-02-2009 05:27 AM

Practice out to 35-40 yards from an elevated position and will not take a shot any farther.

louddrummer69 09-02-2009 05:59 AM

I practice out to 35 yards. Due to where I practice it is the most reasonable. I could go farther but my neighbors might not appreciate it!

BOWHUNTER818 09-02-2009 06:20 AM

Practice out to 55, but 40 is the max i would shoot at a Deer, but 40 has to be perfect conditions..!

ranger56528 09-02-2009 06:53 AM

Being I have 5 pins I practice out to 60yrds but I have never taken a deer past 28yrds...20 and 30 pins get the most shooting time...

HuntingBry 09-02-2009 07:10 AM

I practice out to 50-60 regularly and will stretch it to 70 or even 80 if I get the chance, but I would never shoot at a whitetail over 40. I don't judge others that do, I'm just not comfortable in anything beyond that.

GMMAT 09-02-2009 08:12 AM

Long distance practice is the best way I know of to identify form flaws.

Heeheehee,got that right....

killzonearchery 09-02-2009 09:26 AM

i shot around 100 for fun. I would never shot that far in life on any animal, but we do it for fun and it makes closer shots alot easier

krub6b 09-02-2009 09:49 AM

I practice out to 35,and thats a foot or two into the neighbors yard  :s12:

jklink 09-02-2009 10:47 AM

i practice out to 40, but spend most of my time in the 20-30 range.

Wheatley 09-02-2009 10:51 AM

I like to back up to 80 yards because it makes the closer shots seem very simple. I feel comforatble making a good shot out to 50 yards if needed. I like the 20-30 yard range though.

same thing as i do....if possible i wait for the closest shot...but every afternoon before hunting i always take a shot from 40, then 50, then 60, then 70..and alot of times then move into 20 or 30 for the last shot... if i wasnt shooting good that day i wouldnt consider taking a shot over 30. but if i was dead on with all of those shots i wouldnt hesitate to shoot up to 50.

X2! I love shooting distance although im not very good past 60 yards. I really do like it though, and it makes 40 yards seem like 15 and thats no joke.

THANK YOU! This is helping me resolve an argument with a friend, he shoots holding the bow grip tight like a pistol and according to him torquing your grip will have the same effect (in inches) at 20yds as it will at 60yds,

I was trying to tell him that if he torqued the bow 6 inches left at 20yds that he WILL miss the block completely at 60yds

haha of course he subconsciously slightly changed his grip at the longer shots so it's like arguing with a wall

A truly consistent shot can usually produce 1" groups per every ten yards. So 20yd = 2" 50=5" etc. If he could do that(gain only one inch of group average per every ten yards) He would still be 10" off at 60:s3:

MGH_PA 09-03-2009 10:37 AM

I will go as far as 60 for right now. Regularly about 30-40, but I will go out to 60. As Jeff said, it will certainly magnify any form and/or consistency issues you're having.

bryant1 09-03-2009 11:04 AM

I practice only to 20yds because I don't shoot at a buck over 20yds.

About 8 years ago, my dad's friend gave me some advice and it stuck with me. He is the manager of a very large QDMA plantation owned by one of Georgia's elite, so it was his responsibility to thin the doe population. He had taken 42 does in the past couple years with his bow without missing one and all were recovered. He told me to concentrate hard on the deer's vitals and never take a shot over 20yds, as he only shot one pin in his sights. The most helpful advice I have ever received IMO...

Same here for me it make a 40 or even 50 yrd shot seem like its 20 - 30yrds for me for ME

GMMAT 09-03-2009 11:24 AM

All that being said.....lol

40yds (30, even) in the woods, to me, is a "SIGHTING"....and not a shot op.

SwampCollie 09-03-2009 12:55 PM

70-80 yards... and I'm a world champ in the back yard.

I'll blow a shot at 20 yards if you give me the chance on a deer.

80 yard practice is an equipment thing.... not really a me thing. Ain't hardly a place I bowhunt I can see much more than 25 yards.

sr77 09-03-2009 01:03 PM

I used to practice out to 80 yds., but a bout of target panic quickly cut that distance in half over the last few seasons. This year I have been practicing out to 40 yds. Been worrying much more about form and execution than distance. I will tell you this though Practicing those extra long shots if you are capable makes a 30 yarder seem like a piece of cake.

I practice shots mostly at the 50-60 range and do about 3 at the 65-70 range. When I get closer to the season I shoot maybe a dozen arrows maintaining form and capitalizing on few arrows.

I also believe in doing some short distance shooting with more of a focus on my draw, anchor and release.

pheasantfanatic 09-03-2009 02:09 PM

I practice out to 60, but 30 yards is my max on a live animal right now. I hope to get to where I am comfortable at 40, but that will come when it comes.

treestandsnyper 09-03-2009 03:52 PM

I've got pins that go out to 60 yards and that's how far I practice shooting out to. Honestly though my average shot on whitetails is 30 yards and closer...I just enjoy shooting out farther.

pats102862 09-03-2009 04:25 PM

I was just practicing out to 75 yards with the target turned to the narrow side. It really helps tighten up my thirty yard groups.

tsoc 09-03-2009 05:19 PM

50 and 60 yards are the distances I most commonly practice at.

Phil from Maine 09-04-2009 03:23 AM

I practice and will shoot as well at the 35 yard mark. I hunt from the ground as a rule and with 30 - 35 yard shots I never had a problem hitting the kill zone..

ahunter55 09-04-2009 07:14 AM

I shoot consistently 25-35-45 yds with Broadheads practicing at a 6" styro Circle. I do shoot some at 50 & 55 also. I rarely take a shot over 25 yds-just have not had to BUT I have killed 2 Elk at 35 yds & a Buffalo at 41 yds & a few Whitetails at around 35 yds. Mule Deer (13, I think) have averaged between 30-40 yds). I've taken 15 Wild Hogs & only 1 was at 25 yds-all the rest have been like 20 & under.
2 Deer last year-1 @ 25 yds & 1 @ 10 yds. 2 Hogs last year 1@ 10 feet & 1@ 5 yds.

I would have no problem shooting 50 yds if everything was perfect but would probably pass & hope for a closer shot.
