Default Testing materials

If you were going to do a penetration test of a couple of broadheads what materials would you use that would most closely immitate an actual animal? One layer of something for bones a thick layer of something wet or slippery for the lungs and another bone layer.

Say for instance 1/4" plywood followed by 24 inches of wet low density foam followed by another layer of 1/4" plywood.

The most practical I think would be 1/4" luon board followed by a large ballon filled with jello, then another 1/4" peice of luon board. Wrap the entire mess with vinal/carpet layer to simulate hair/hide. Of course that would be a real pain in the but. I think 2 peices of 1/4 luon and the wet foam would be as practical as anything and still give you enough density to measure your results. I did some tests with differnt arrow weights and Rocky ti-100 and ti-85 grn broadheads last year. I was lucky enough to have several peices of foam isulation wraped in very light weight tin. This worked reall well and gave easy to measure results.

Not to sound totally ignorant but what exactly is luan board?

I like the idea of using jello as it is probably the closest, and most inexpensive, thing to ballistic gelatin.

So, Chris, when are you going to put one of these contraptions together?

If I' m thingking about the same thing Chris is, luan board is almost like that old brown paneling used for homes.

I use concrete forms, which are essentially plywood soaked in deisel and oil.....I think it is a good bone substitute....I think 1/4" " soaked" plywood w/ ballistic gellatin behind it would be a good media for determining penetration and BH durability.....

Not quite the same as an 800 pound elk.

I don' t think the neighbors would appreciate me bringing a road killed elk to the house.

Luon is alot like paneling, it' s not near as dense as plywood, and normaly has a smooth finish. Most interior doors in homes use luon panels. Or at least the inexspensive ones are made of it. As for when I am going to make one, I have thought about it, but I can' t keep up with what I am doing now! I would love to ge some balistic gelitan and do some testing though.
