Default Slowest Speed

What is the slowest speed you would except in your hunting bow?

150 fps with a selfbow with a 600 grain arrow. 180 with the same arrow on a longbow or recurve. Compounds... They don' t make ' em that slow.

I don' t know, I could get my bow shooting very slow, but, it would take one HECK of a heavy arrow. Heck, my bow is slinging a 420 grain arrow at 302 f.p.s.

170 fps and " cut-on-contact" heads.

Probably the slowest I would want to shoot would be around 230 but prefer more.My accuracy starts going down at this speed.I prefer 260 but it looks like about 248 will be my speed this year. It' s all good.

My hunting selfbows are in the 140-160 fps range. I don' t know about a minimum " speed" per se; I like to just shoot the most bow weight I can handle comfortably and match my equipment accordingly.

Sort of a side note, but I snap shot a doe one year from half-draw with a 65# selfbow. I don' t know if the arrow even left the bow at 100 fps, yet the deer went down in 25 yds and died as fast or faster than deer I' ve shot with 250+ fps compounds. [X(]

Speed ain' t everything. 260fps would be the minimum for me, but along with that, I would want to have 55lbs/KE. For example zinging a 250grain arrow at 260fps nets you a whopping 37lb/KE. The minimum bow for me is one that will throw a 350grain arrow 260fps or better, netting 52-55lb/KE.

As some of the others made reference to that would depend on the weight of the arrow that I was shooting.... I would expect something around 220 fps if I were to throw an arrow in the 650-700 grain range but not much slower. I once had an old Martin Bobcat that shot around 230 fps with some particularly heavy aluminums and energy wheels if that helps any.

i am no expert, but i think as long as you can group your arrows in a 3" circle at 20-25yds. without having to radically adjust at 10yds. you will kill deer.i started bowhunting with a 50# ben pearson from wal-mart many years ago using 2217 eastons 31" long with 125gr. kolpin twisters.i killed a buck and two does my first year with this set up.hunters get hung up about speed of the arrow without taking into consideration that unless you can find a bow that shoots over 1000fps what does it matter except for controlling the sound of your shot?i do not have expensive equipment but have learned about bowhunting from bowhunters and websites like this along with experience being the best teacher.just my views.i am 61 years old and and use a york bow set at the max of 70# with 30" eastons and the same 125gr kolpin broadheads and a predator pendalum with kisser button instead of peep.

260 would be as low as I go.

I personally like in the 280' s. for hunting. I find that speed very managable, and flat enough for my 1 pin out to 30 yds, and a 40 yd pin.
