GMMAT or other NC hunters
What happened to our new proposed deer seasons?
H6) Establish a uniform deer season (matching the current Eastern Deer Season) in and east of Yancey, McDowell and Rutherford counties (WRC Districts 1-8), on private lands only, with the following structure: • bow and arrow season opens on the Saturday on or nearest to September 10 and ends the fourth Friday thereafter; • muzzleloader season opens the Saturday on or nearest to October 8 and ends the following Friday; • and all lawful weapon seasons opens the Saturday on or nearest to October 15 and ends January 1. • Bow and arrow will be allowed during the muzzleloader season. 15A NCAC 10B .0203 White-tailed Deer Motion from Big Game Committee to modify as follows: Deer seasons in the Northwestern Deer Season will be changed so that the regular gun season is extended through January 1. Deer seasons in the Eastern, Central, and Western deer season structures will remain unchanged. Adopted (as modified). I looked at the maps and it said we only ran through Dec 19th here in the Northwestern season?????? Did they jerk that back off and run it back through the hoops again and get it changed? |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
and not that I agree with this........this also...
H5) Shorten the bow season by one week and open the muzzleloader season one week earlier to create a two week muzzleloader season. 15A NCAC 10B .0203 White-tailed Deer Adopted |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
The North Carolina Bow Hunters Association got together and wrote letters to block it after it was already approved...This also knocked out crossbows for the coming season and Sunday hunting on private land with a bow...
There is a law on the books that if 10 letters are written then the General Assembly has to vote on it and they didn't before this year's regulations were passed... I understand that if you want a crossbow in NC, now is the time to buy as dealers had stocked up and now are sitting on inventory that they will have to pay for... |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Glad about the crossbows being voted out, as hunting on Sunday, but not so glad about the not hunting until January 1.
|
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Why are you glad of crossbows being voted out???
|
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Granted this day in age we need all the help we can get as hunters in the political world, cross bows put more people in the woods that normally wouldnt be there. Yes they still need tuning, yes they shoot arrows with broad heads and have roughly the same range, but in my close minded head, bow hunting is about drawing on an animal and aiming the way bows are aimed, not pre-cocked and aimed like a rifle.
To me it's all about Ford versus Chevy etc.....wouldnt hurt my feelings if they banned Chevys from the roads and we all had to drive Toyota or Ford or something like that. Snobby personal preference lol. |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
What if releases were outlawed???
|
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Guess go back to fingers...Like I said, just a snobby preference. I know it's not 'right' but you have to draw a line somewhere, right? or we would all be lumped into one season using whatever we want.

RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
So did I read that right that they recanted the bowhunting on Sunday's on private land?

RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
I agree and it ticks me off...I can't understand why one group of hunters can care how another likes to hunt...
I love hunting with my flintlock rifles, don't care for inlines, but I'm not going to petition to have inlines banned from hunting... Same with bows...I still shoot fingers, don't want a release...Having thestring cradled in your fingers and then releasing is natural to me...Others just can't seem to get the hang of shooting fingers, fine by me, could care less... I read an email that was sent out by Ramon Bell, the president of the NC Bowhunters Association and in it he says that we don't need an early gun season because hunters would be shooting each other becauseof limited sight distance with the leaves on the trees...So you have one hunter painting others in a bad light... He doesn't know me from Adam's Housecat, has no ideawhat type hunter I amand he is wrong...As you know, the season down East comes in early, doesn't seem to be a problem...I hunt out of tree stands or tower stands on land that my family owns, I'm shooting down, often over a fieldhow can that be unsafe??? He sure has hurt the credibility of himself and the NC Bowhunters Association... |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
I could care less about the hunting on Sunday thing. It doesn't make much difference one way or the other to me. I hate to see it passed then fail, yet I also don't mind having a day where I can do as I need to do and not have to worry that I am cutting into my hunting time. Wierd, I know. Just don't like doing work on stands or moving stands on a day that I COULD be hunting, so I don't feel like I have the pressure on me to hunt that extra day. A mind game I play with myself I suppose.
Crossbows...well when I worked in the local, or USED to be local shop, with the exception of the legit guys with permits, I saw a lot of guys, perfectly capablethat I would consider shady, and I know they were, that got crossbows underground somehow, that didn't feel like learning how to shoot a vertical bow. Just left a bad taste in my mouth. I know there are more great guys that are capable of shooting a vertical bow, that shoot crossbows than guys that aren't so great, and but capable, that shoot crossbows, just a couple bad apples spoiled that for me. To each their own. They were typically the guys that only hunted Tgiving week, two days, and shot a young buck (which is ok), then cut the rack off and threw the carcass, meat and all, away. As for the seasons, I think at this point, it could only help those of us with a lot of deer, but season ends two weeks early, and only have 2 weeks of either sex. Oh well. Not trying to start a fuss, just my opinion and trying to show why I had that opinion. I shouldn't be that way, the guys I knew of that put crossbows on my s-list used them to trespass to poach, but didnt bother to learn how to shoot a vertical bow. They liked to brag about it. Not sure if they ever got caught or not, as when I left that place, they still bragged about it. |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
I've boycotted the NCBA as long as I'm going to. I picked up an application to join, just today.
It'll be worth the $20 membership fee to able to stand up at one of their meetings and speak my mind. I am SO looking forward to that day. |

RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Treed...There's nothing wrong with a fellow having his own opinions and voicing them...
What I had a problem with was when I read the email and Ramon Bell threw every gun hunter under the bus... I have the same "problem" with dog hunters because we own 3 farms (850 acres) down east and it seems that when I go back home and take some buddies to hunt that the dog hunters drop dogs off on the road by our farms...I kill the deer that run by me and they pick up the dogs and leave...I don't like deer hunters who let their dogs run everywhere but I'm not going to Raleigh to petition against...I do know that there are some decent dog hunters out there, I just haven't met them... |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
I wouldn't petition it either. Crossbows, dogs, arrows loaded with gunpower to explode on impact, anything lol. hawkeye if memory serves me, you're a huge advocate for a 243? I been away from the forums for a while and trying to put names with topics ive seen in the past. Youd think with over 600posts I could remember a few people lol.
|
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
I do use a .243, but if I had bought a .270 in 1980 then I'd probably love it as well...:D
Guess I'm a tight wad, if something worksI stick with it...Kinda why I've been married 30 years as well... |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Why someone would not be able to utlize the natural resources on their own private land just b/c it is a Sunday is beyond me.........
|
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
So how long does the bow season run in nc,the regulations were not very clear to me.As far as not being able to hunt on sundays seems a little silly to me,but hey I think I should be able to chose how I spend my time any day of the week.
|
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
My problem with prohibiting Sunday hunting is that it decreases kids' opportunities to hunt without missing school.

RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
Honestly, I don't think the NCBA had anything to do with it. Some of the laws like Sunday bowhunting got scrapped too. I heard Bev Perdue put it down. I would have liked the Sunday bowhunting to pass. All those adopted rules got tabled for review next year, that's what I was told by Fish and Game.

As a side note it appears that the NCBA, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission have been feuding for a while now. To be honest I am not sure why it was not suggested to allow the bow season to remain the same. We could always start the muzzloading week at its normal time, and let it continue a week longer. I think having a standard statewide hunting season would be helpful as well. Either way it will go up before the Rules Review Commission, and be voted on for the next year. |
RE: GMMAT or other NC hunters
[:@]Thanks NCBA or whoever did it, I just lost one valuable hunting day for sure. I dont care to much about the Crossbow law, although I see your point about the misconceptions on accuracy and range of them. The ending of bow season one week early and starting muzzeloader early is crazy. Lets take away a week from the guys with a four week exclusive season, but still allow the gun season to go on for 2 1/2 months. :eek:I love our states wildlife commission [:'(]
