The anticipation leading up to your hunt

The anticipation leading up to your hunt
These are simple questions really. I would like to know how you deal with the excitement which comes as your "big" hunt draws near-be it for deer, elk, turkey, etc. Is there a routine you follow (e.g. name your arrows)? Which hunt gets you the most wired?
I am sitting here typing...couldn't sleep last night because my upcoming coastal black bear outting (with Kodiakarcher) is heavy on my mind. The DIY hunt starts in seven days. The gear is packed (pulled out and re-stowed seven or eight times actually), the bow is ready, bills are paid in advance. I just wish I could get the nerves under control (too detail oriented)-I like sleep and would love to be fresh when I land on Prince of Wales Island. Then again, I hope all of this excitement never goes away. It is so much a part of my experience.
So tell me, what gets your motor running and what do you do to keep it from revving past the redline? Do you spent your first day of hunting sleeping? I know it catches up with me...

RE: The anticipation leading up to your hunt
I've always been this way, Will. I'm also a "morning person", and the people I know like this (big time)tend to be, also.
I've never packed for a big hunting trip like yours....but I hope to this fall/winter....and I REALLY hope to next Elk season! I ALWAYS......no matter how many trips....got "that feeling" before baseball road trips in college. Never dissipated. Like you....I'm glad.
PGA Tour great Tom Watson once said.....that all we can ever hope to do is to put ourselves into the arena. The more we do it, the better we can hope to control our emotions, once there.
But I never could and hope I never do control them to the point where "that feeling" leaves me. That would be a sad day. To me....that's the little boy stilll in us. Hell....embrace it!
I wish you and Rob luck, and I expect to get a photo link when you return. I hate I couldn't make it.....but I'm excited for you.

RE: The anticipation leading up to your hunt
Nerves are not much of a factor for me anymore. I always think of a hunting trip as a vacation and just make plans to enjoy myself and be comfortable.
If the chance to harvest the animal comes along I know instinct will take over and get the job done.
I rarely worry about anything I can not control. I just control the things thatI can,and deal with the rest the best wayI know how, Weather, game movement, etc., etc. I really don't feel like I need to be a nervous wreck to enjoy Bowhunting. I still get the Rush when the task is complete, and that's what I hunt for.
Everyone is different! Worry and nerves I think are harder to control for some than others, but I'm glad I don't deal with that anymore.

Will, I'm no different then you. The sleepness nights and the excitement really kicks my but but yet I'm not tired because of It. The adrenaline and excitement takes over. I don't name arrows or anything like that, I just play out In my mind how I hope the shot turns out.
Good luck out there!!

But sleeping is one thing I dont have trouble doing
I honestly can't remember when the last time I had a sleepless night because of a up coming hunt.
Had a few sleepless nights on planes getting to the hunts tho, which is why I always arrived a couple of days before the hunts. I am just not a good flyer, I hate not being able to see where I am going

To be honest Dan, If I didn't have all the excitement and anticipation leading up to the hunt then I'd be done with this stuff. I hope I never loose the excitement no matter If It's the hunting or the stuff that goes on before the trip. Like you said though, everyone Is different.

I wouldn't Bowhunt if I didn't enjoy it

RE: The anticipation leading up to your hunt
I personally didn't know I had to get nervous and excited to the point of sleeplessness, etc. to be able to enjoy doing something
