RE: Wayne Zaft Being Investigated
I am in " Bigbulls' corner on this one!
" WHO CARES!!!?" As far as I am concerned, the emphasis on killing trophy bucks is overrated and detrimental to deer genetics and the reputation of bowhunting. The clique-promoted and hunting industry-hyped prestige of having killed a set of big antlers (bones) is so important to some, they will cheat, lie, fight, trespass, and poach to be acclaimed as a mighty and expert buck hunter. Other than having competent knowledge of Whitetail behavior, knowledge of deer behavior particular to the area you hunt, and good hunting practice -which many, many bowhunters have all; the secret to killing bucks is access, time, and money, and, often, something that is not usually mentioned by the buck hunters; [/b]the luck-of-the-draw[/b]. If you have access, especially private access, to the area(s) that the big buck mainly beds and moves; and you can be in the field the majority of the hunting season and time, your chances of bagging a nice buck is greatly increased. Many very good bowhunters do not have these advantages. My wife has a co-worker who saves all his comp and vacation time throughout the year, then takes the entire bowhunting season off (3 months). He is in the field everyday from sunup to sundown. He is a strictly a " buck" hunter when hunting in Illinois. Last season he finally downed a big antlered buck (Illinois) he had been hunting for 10 years. To his credit, he admits that he happened to be in an area and at a time that he did not expect to see the buck. In addition, according to him, he has passed on many good deer while hunting this particular buck. If, as I do, he considers a successful hunting season just to be in the woods, and to experience the anticipation of the unknown and the increase in heart rate when you hear a rustling in the leaves behind you, he has a had 10 years of good hunting. If not, and now that the " chase" is over, will he begin to ponder and regret passing on many good deer…..including does? The false status of killing a big antlered buck, shooting fast and popular bows rigged with the latest and faddish " bells and whistles," is so pervasive, many good bowhunters are too intimidated, almost ashamed, to talk about their smaller antlered buck or doe kills, and their not so new and faddish gear. These days, I hate going into a bow shop when status-seeking bowhunters are present. When I overhear some of them talking, the word that always comes to mind, is " prima donna." Just give me a competent and " down-to-earth" bowhunter, armed with just the right gear to get the job done, any day. |

RE: Wayne Zaft Being Investigated
Ditto c903! All this CRAP (for worry that cussing might get you tagged by a moderator :)) makes meat hunters look like weenies cause they want to fill their limit and get some meat in the last 3 months of the year rather than buy it throughout the next year. I hope that, tho I would take a shot at a nice buck, I don' t move through the infamous " hunting stages" wherein you go through the trophy stage.
Again, don' t get me wrong I' d take a shot at a nice buck, I' ll try and call them in... it' s just the prestige mystique that' s tainting everything. 6 figures off of one buck... that' s sick. What did he (or any other hunter) do to deserve to pull that off? Make a decent shot at 30-40yds (or whatever it was)?? I do that almost daily when I shoot on my lunch break... Where' s my 6 figures?? Pay up boys...:D Trophy hunters can be trophy hunters, that' s fine... But just keep it to yourselves and don' t be so loud about [:-] |
RE: Wayne Zaft Being Investigated
Hey all you ethical hunters and posters of this thread. I CARE.
Why is it that some of you guys give and continue to give White Raven a hard time about posting about the Zaft fiasco. It seems that if someone wants to post about something and it' s not to your liking then you start bashing and downgrading. Who really has a problem here wasting time and effort putting someone down, you guys going to work for Zaft in his hunting adventures or what? I think that the Zaft deal is as bogus as a three dollar bill and so do a bunch of others. The guy didn' t shoot this deer, it was found and he didn' t even find it, someone else did. I doubt that it was even a hunter kill to begin with. Even Pope & Young and Boone & Crockett could see through this blundering bogus story. Maybe the hunting community will be lucky and someone will come forward with the real story about Zaft so that he will be so embarressed about being caught in his story that he will just disappear like Rompola did. So why don' t you guys chill and find a life for yourselves instead of bashing WR. White Raven, I think that the posts about Zaft are good and informational. Keep on, there are those who want to know and are mature enough to digest the info without worrying about the source. |
RE: Wayne Zaft Being Investigated
BowhuntingFool, your sources on the link you provided crediting this deer as being the next P&Y are so out of date it' s not even funny. The buck was deducted so heavily during the panel scoring in march (as a typical would have ranked around about 2000th in P&Y) that it was actually scored as a non-typical. I' m going to be interested in seeing how Alberta responds to the announcement in May because they have Zaft listed as the #1 typical in Alberta. Problem is they use the same scoring system as P&Y and those that scored it belong to P&Y as well. It will be interesting to see how the ABA (Alberta Bowhunter' s Association) will explain the discrepancy. Man I' m gonna love it when the results are officially released in 2 weeks.

White Raven , you crack me up!:D |

NO it is not their(p&y or b&c) scoring system.Buckmaster uses THEIR OWN scoring system and imo is a better system. Arthur,I agree that all these organizations are after something other than record keeping. My question really still remains. Was their a vote that put them in charge. |
RE: Wayne Zaft Being Investigated
White-raven, I am a BTR Scorer for the very reasons many are fed up with B&C or P&Y, they want to deduct from a rack what nature put there. BTR scores rack only, not air for the official score. Who cares about the Zaft buck , any of us would be very glad to have the deer on our wall. If you know the right people your deer can be scored high on B&C or P&Y, I have been insulted enough by their scorers but I paid for my training class and passed the test to score for BTR and yes all of these organizations is about money, the world is about money that is what has destroyed much of the deer hunting areas we once held secret.[8D]

RE: Wayne Zaft Being Investigated
Buckshot is right about Milo Hanson having that huge line at the Buckarama in Atlanta this year. Me n my dad n his friend looked at the deer, said hmmm nice buck, n went off to look at other things. Some things, like the Zaft buck, are way overpublicized and get just plain out annoying after hearing about em so much. If Zaft did kill that buck legitimately and it becomes the new world record, so be it, no skin off my @ss. Just my 2 cents.
