RE: Treestand hunting for spring turkeys
Check your state regulations.
Hunting turkey from an elevated stand is illegal in Maryland. |
RE: Treestand hunting for spring turkeys
You can try it if legal but they will pick you off up in a tree easier than if onthe ground. I don't know if I've ever had turkeys walk by my stand in the fall and not see me.

Sureit'll work. you just hafta stay still just like on the ground (not in a blind). They have natural preditors above them, but not that many. I've used a climber with a drop down blind (summit), and it helps blend in your form. If its legal go for it! You'll only gain more exp.

RE: Treestand hunting for spring turkeys
Its illegal to hunt from an elevated position for Turkey, where I hunt.
I do still use a tree-stand, though. I take the top to my Summit Climber into the woods. Find a nice trunk with some cover around and hook it on a few feet off of the ground. Makes for a comfortable sit, easy to shoulder my shotgun or draw my bow. |
RE: Treestand hunting for spring turkeys
Try it, if you are looking for an added challenge to the hunt.
Don't expect to gain any advantages from it though. Also, I am confused by the train of thought...they never seem to be there when you are on the ground, but if you switch to climbing into the stand, they will start frequenting the area again?[&:] |
RE: Treestand hunting for spring turkeys
Because I set up on a ridge on the other side of a creek and I over look where the stand is located. When I am on that ridge they always show up by the stand about 125 yards away. I get in there way early so it is not like they see me and the walk to the ridge is easy to sneak in. When I hunt the stand in the fall it never fail in the morning they come into it. When I set up by the stand in the spring on the ground I see the birds leave the roost and fly right across the the creek and land on the ridge. It just seems where I go I get the run around with these birds.....hope this answers it tembry
