Mamma gave me the green light!
Well kate pulled out400 bones and told me to go get some of them game cameras. So what do ya do, buy 1 expensive one or 2 lesser ones?
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
hell for that you can spring for almost three of the moultries which work well for me

RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I'd rather have a quality unit than 2 cheaper ones. Check on the boards and find someone to help you build a couple of Homebrews.
They are really the ticket!;) Dan |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Get you a couple of the Moultries.... I-40 for example is def. worth checking out.
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
For $400 and if that's all you can afford on trail cams for the year, I'd run with 2 cheaper models instead of 1. Simply....you can cover more ground without losing a TON on picture quality and trigger speed.
Cuddeback Capture, Moultrie 40 series, Moultrie 60 series, Scoutguard, etc... |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I look forward to the pics TeeJay.

ORIGINAL: MeanV2 I'd rather have a quality unit than 2 cheaper ones. Check on the boards and find someone to help you build a couple of Homebrews. They are really the ticket!;) Dan However, in my case or thought process, I'm worried about thieves... So I bought the cheapest I could find. As of last Jan 2008 the WildView's (2 meg) were two for $100. 4-SD 512k cards = $25. 16-Rechargeable "c" batteries w/ charger = $60 I can now scout leaving my camera out for a few weeks and when I retrieve them, I simply swap out the batteries and cards and relocate them to a new spot for more scouting without going home. Of course I'm so darn excited when I have pictures I almost pee my pants, while driving home to view them on my computer, kind of like a male dog with his red thingy out!!!:D I can cover twice as many spots for scouting than with only one camera!;) My main focus is weather the deer have antlers or not, I'm not concerned about picture quality. Although the age old saying of "you get what you pay for" can come into play with other features like, trigger speed, battery life, longevity, etc... Good luck and have a blast with it, I sure do!!! ![]() |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I would buy a nice IR and then buy a moultrie D40 or two.
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I'd go with quality over quantity. Reconyx are spendy but they won't miss a thing like allot of the others will.
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Depends on what you are looking for? Quality pictures or a scouting tool?
I bought mine because I wanted to see what was on the land. Wasn't really looking for high end photos, but did get some. Originally my wife bought me one of the $100 Moultries and it worked great and then started having issues. Moultrie offered me an upgrade to the next camera up and I love it. Never misses a pictures and takes some really nice ones too. My buddy bought the I series on ebay and paid under $200 for it with a sd card and remote. |

RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
If you use them just for a scouting tool, as someone else mentioned the wisest choice is to get two mediocre cameras. If it is extremely important for you to have professional clarity on your pictures then you can spend the extra and get a high end camera. Otherwise, its much more wise and efficient to buy two mediocre cameras, (which still take far good enough quality pictures) so you can watch two areas at once. I bought the cheap moultrie and I'm glad I did. If I had bought a camera for around $300 I would have felt totally ripped. Glad I spent 100 and still have the same tool as the others for 300.. You make the choice.. its an easy one..

RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I was in the same boat not to long ago. I ended up buying two Moultrie 4.0s. Actually going to put them out today, and do a little shed hunting.
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
and here are a couple from a "cheap" moutlrie ($100)
Quality isnt that much worse than some of the expensive brands.. sometimes ya get what ya pay for.. other times, marketers realize this is how people think and take advantage of it.. I'll stick with my moultrie.. Heres one of a buck.. And another of him from the year before.. ![]() ![]() |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Here's another Pic from a Homebrew!
Dan ![]() |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I don't really care about quality although it is nice when you start trying to see details.
I set a cheap cam beside my HomeBrew for 10 days I think and the Howebrew got 90+ pics while the cheap cam got 37. The Homebrews aren't as expensive as you might think. I've owned Cuddebacks, Moultries, & Bushnells, but nothing compared to the Homebrews. Dan |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
man i bought the ones from walmart for 50 bucks, they work perfect for me and arer easy to set up
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Get both quantity AND quality...get two Covert cams. Cheaper than the "best" but hardly any noticeable difference between them besides, well, cost.
check em out. http://www.covertscoutingcamera.com/ |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
This is where I am leaning, but Dan do tell about these homebrews.

The string suppressors are listed on the website and we have done some for the Admiral.I have like 4 models now.If you have any questions you can PM me. Dan |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I would get two $200 cams like a moultrie I40 and a cuddeback capture or two of one model of these.
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
What's the trigger speed of your home brews Dan? Do they take pics or video's at night and If so are they IR or what?

Whatever someone spends their hard earned dough on is what is going to be the best in there opinion, whether right orwrong, with most guys anyway. I never said $200-250 was cheap, just cheaper than similar quality cams in alot of cases. My Wildview is cheap, my moultrie is cheap (older model)....and guess what, it shows as well.:) |

RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
DO NOT GET THE MOULTRIE I-40 OR I-60!! THEY ARE CRAP!!
The new I40's and I60's (2008 or later) are nothing but problems and will fail within weeks if not days. Ive had 4 of each this past fall and I only had one last longer than a month. Half of them went craps the day i bought them. LCD screens quit working, or Infrared flash stopped working usually. I have telephoned moultrie and emailed them about the problems. They never would respond to emails, and over the phone they said there hasnt been any reports of problems, .Do a google search and you will find this is a common problem for the moultrie I40 and I60. Even the guys at chasingame.com gave up on them. |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Dan,Yep that is what I was looking for. Now does this guy have any plans to build one or does he do it for you. How much? Where do I find the info out?

RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I use several I-40's by moultrie and i dont think there is a better one out there. IMO
|
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
I found the Moultrie M40 digital camera w/flash to beone of the best cameras Moultrie offers...and I've tried several different models of Moultries, Cuddeback, Bushnell, Vision, Leaf River and Stealth.
Now I use the M40's, Cuddyback NoFlash, and the SmartScouter. I also tried the homebrew routeand got ripped off...got recommendations from a bow hunting site and paid the guy in advance (as he requested) for TWO (2) trail cameras ( STUPID ME)...got one that never worked and never got the other one. The guy then disappeared on me and the other who recommended the cameras threw his hands in the air! Never got the other camera neither my money back. However I find going to a full fledged camera company you are able to return cameras for warranty repairs and sometimes even get a new exchange. I much rather deal witha reputable company, since getting burnt. |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Check out the scoutguard 550,great camera and has video

RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
Gowith the Hombrew.I built these last year using a Sony p41 camera. FYI I put one of these cameras right above my Cuddeback on the same tree and it took 5-6 pics for every pic the Cuddeback took.

I liked the pic of the fawn jumping into the camera with it not being blurred...:)
But I still like my stealth prowler non the less.. |
RE: Mamma gave me the green light!
It's a no brainer! Four hundred dollars equals two CuddebackCapture's.
Oh, and leave that IR alone. Nuff said!;) |
