Sit or stand?

I was just curious how you guys shoot out of your stand? Do you mostly stand up to take shots or sit down?I have shot 2 bucks out of a stand and both times I have been sitting while shooting. When I practice though I am always standing and hardly ever practice sitting down. Let me know what you guys do now or have done in the past.

I have taken a few shots while sitting, but most of the time I try to stand. Now, when I'm using my viper it's hard to stay standing since it's so comfy.

I stand up in the stand. But if I was on the ground I'd shoot from sitting on my knees.

I don't think I have ever taken a shot from a stand while sitting. I stand most of the time and if I am sitting when a deer comes it I try to get up. It has cost be a shot here and there, but I just don't feel comfortable shooting while sitting, so I don't.

I've shot 80% of my game sitting. When I hunt in a Treestand or a Blind it's usually from daylight until dark, and I want to be as comfy, quiet, and move as little as possible.

So I sit, and I won't stand unless something is coming to my offside and I know I have to stand up to turn around to shoot. If they are where I expect them to be I just pull my Bow back and Drill'em;)

MeanV, do you also practice while sitting? I find that it is not too much different shooting sitting down from standing. That could just be me though.

I have in the past, just to check, but nothing ever changes for me. IMO consistent shooting is mostly about upper body postion, and form.

I have a friend that shoots much better sitting down. IMO it's because he is not real stable on his feet.;)

I mostly stand, but this year I did shoot a doe fawn sitting. I have also drawn my bow back while sitting and then stood up to take the shot if the deer allowed me to.

I also shoot sitting most of the time. In fact I've only shoot (at game) standing a hand full of times. I practice shooting from an elevated, sitting positionas often as possible.

RE: Sit or stand?

I'm right handed so I can sit for shots to my left but have to stand for ones on the right. Problem is I've been busted too many times trying to sit for a shot that didn't present until the deer crossed over to my offhand side. Now I stand as soon as I think there is something coming in that I want to shoot, no matter what side it's coming from.

RE: Sit or stand?

I'd say I'm around 50/50. I've shot quite a few while standing and sitting. I actually try to position myself in the tree to have the deer on my left side (right handed shooter) so I don't have to stand. However, while hunting, I do like to stand a lot, especially at first and last light when movement is up.

RE: Sit or stand?

I'm almost always standing. The only exception is when I'm in my ladder stand. It's not that I'm uncomfortable taking a sitting shot, I just like to be standing. In most of my sets, I can rotate much freely side to side. I think it all comes down to personal preference and comfort.

I have always stood up . I have done it on my knees on the ground but most of the time standing

I hardly ever sit in my stand period. I just like standing and it seems to keep me warmer in the colder months.

RE: Sit or stand?

I do both, but prefer to stand because of the unpredictability of deer movement. I want to be able to adjust. That being said, I feel very comfortable shooting while sitting and put a perfect double lung on a doe at 25 yards a couple years ago while sitting. If I remember correctly I shot a 6 pointer from sitting last year at about 10 yards because he came up onme so fast I couldn't stand. Anyways, I feel it is in our best interests to practice both.

I love my wb i like how you can set it and forget it. my only gripe about it is it is hard on the vanes. i like being able to put the arrow in and lay the bow down on my lap and not have to mess with my arrow when the moment of truth comes.

RE: Sit or stand?

I usually sit. I practice both ways, but I have found I'm better shooting sitting. I just can't get my legs far enough apart if I'm standing to feel comfortable shooting standing out of a tree stand (climber).

RE: Sit or stand?

I always stand, cuz thats how I practice. If I'm gonna hunt out of my blind I practice shooting sitting down..but in a treestand I like to stand.
Actually though, the first arrow I ever let go at a deer was from a sitting position in my treestand. Lets just say it didnt work out:eek:..
Ever since then I've made sure I'm alert and ready so that I have time to stand up in the stand before the deer are right on top of me.
Just feels better to shoot standingimo... Plus its easier to bend at the waist so that my point of aim is not messed up. Learned that lesson..I guess I dont have as much confidence yet shooting at downward angles while sitting

When I hunted from a treestand, I preferred to be sitting, but these days I just hang from my Tree Saddle with feet resting on some pegs and my knees against the tree. It's avery stable shot from that postion.

RE: Sit or stand?

I practice every shot possible, but I always shoot standing up, heck, I stand most of the time while in my treestand, I'll sit every so often then get right back up again!

I would say I am about 50/50 and like most guys have to stand for shots to my right. I will be honet I would much rather shoot sitting, if I am in a tree. I just like the way it feels.

Ill stand if i have a choice.I shot my buck this year sitting, he cought me by suprise and i was pinned down by a doe right below meso i couldn't move till she left. When she left i drew and shot.

I stand unless conditions do not allow it

RE: Sit or stand?

It depends on the stand and the approaching deer . If I am sitting and the deer approaches and offers me a shot , I have a clear lane , I will shoot that way . If there are obstacles and it is necessary to stand , i will ease up to shoot . Less movement is better and i practice from a 10' ladder stand in my back yard so I get a lot of opportunities to practice shooting sitting down .

I stand immediately upon seeing a deer or at least at the first opportunity. I cannot begin to remember any deer I've ever shot while seated.

RE: Sit or stand?

When I set my stands, I position them as best I can to allow for a seated shot towards the most likely position. (ie. I turn the stand for my LH shot) My buddies may not like it or even notice it, but it just may save me someday when I get surprised. All that said, I stand as much as possible in the stand as most of my hunts are 3 hours or less and if caught seated, I stand as soon as possible.

RE: Sit or stand?

I have always sat.... Also, I believe the reason is b/cI have mostly hunted out of tri-pods and homemade ground blind b/c I haven'thad a lot of opportunity to huntwhere there are big trees (mostly small scrub oaks and cedar's)... Thus I haven't hunted out of very many climber'sbut in the area's that havebig trees,I use hang on's thatallow me to swivel a minimum of 180 degrees...
