Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
 

I have firearm hunted on our land in northern Minnesota for the past 3 years, and none ofthe deer I shot ran more than 30 yards. I am thinking about getting into bow hunting for the first time but am very concerned about tracking deer in the thick woods. I watch the hunting shows on TV and it seems that every deer hit by an arrow takes off full bore.

My question to you experienced bow hunters is, what is the average distance your deer ran before dropping?

My average is 55 yds after the hit.

HTN - that questions almost impossible - you never know even with a great hit could be 5 yards could be 500, id say with a good heart and lung no worries short recovery. anything less than that and its a roll of the dice.

If hit right thru the lungs, average is 50 yards for me, but have seen well hit animals go 100. Poorly hit animals in the guts can go litterly 1 mile.

The average I've seen is probably close to 50 yards, some less, some more.
The Muley I shotthis monthran full blast but only went 30 yards before piling up.
To keep the bloodtrails short and very visible, keepyour shots in the boiler room, keep them in the bottom 1/3 of the Deer, and strive forconsistent pass throughs.

I don't remember the last time that I didn't get a pass through.

With good hits or bad hits?

Good hit = Deer have dropped in their tracks or have gone maybe 80 yards.

Bad hit = 200-300 yards, makes tough tracking!!!

Good hit - anything recovered !

For me, most fall within sight and that's from about 20 yards to 80 yards. I have had some go further though.......

Withagood solid double lung or heart hit you can expect between 20-80 yards depending on how fast the deer takes off. If they're spooked andtake off running, they can cover lots of ground in a few seconds. A deer hit solid through both lungscan only go so long without air so how fast it's running will determine the distance traveled. If it's hit through the heart you can expect the same as a double lung, maybe slightly longer. (there are exceptions to the rule but that's few and far between)

Now, if the hit is marginal then you probably already know the answer as to how far they can run....... and that's anywhere!;)
