Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
I have firearm hunted on our land in northern Minnesota for the past 3 years, and none ofthe deer I shot ran more than 30 yards. I am thinking about getting into bow hunting for the first time but am very concerned about tracking deer in the thick woods. I watch the hunting shows on TV and it seems that every deer hit by an arrow takes off full bore.
My question to you experienced bow hunters is, what is the average distance your deer ran before dropping? |

My average is 55 yds after the hit.

![]() Ok totally offtopic here but DROPTINE u must be a hell of a ladies man theres always a different girl on your avatar ! HTN - that questions almost impossible - you never know even with a great hit could be 5 yards could be 500, id say with a good heart and lung no worries short recovery. anything less than that and its a roll of the dice. my .02 |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
If hit right thru the lungs, average is 50 yards for me, but have seen well hit animals go 100. Poorly hit animals in the guts can go litterly 1 mile.

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
The average I've seen is probably close to 50 yards, some less, some more.
The Muley I shotthis monthran full blast but only went 30 yards before piling up. To keep the bloodtrails short and very visible, keepyour shots in the boiler room, keep them in the bottom 1/3 of the Deer, and strive forconsistent pass throughs. I don't remember the last time that I didn't get a pass through. Dan |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
With good hits or bad hits?
Good hit = Deer have dropped in their tracks or have gone maybe 80 yards. Bad hit = 200-300 yards, makes tough tracking!!! |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
How about -
Good hit - anything recovered ! Bad Hit - no recovery ;) |

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
For me, most fall within sight and that's from about 20 yards to 80 yards. I have had some go further though.......
Withagood solid double lung or heart hit you can expect between 20-80 yards depending on how fast the deer takes off. If they're spooked andtake off running, they can cover lots of ground in a few seconds. A deer hit solid through both lungscan only go so long without air so how fast it's running will determine the distance traveled. If it's hit through the heart you can expect the same as a double lung, maybe slightly longer. (there are exceptions to the rule but that's few and far between) Now, if the hit is marginal then you probably already know the answer as to how far they can run....... and that's anywhere!;) |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Most of the time I get lung shots and they go 30-50 yards. Longest went about 70. I find that the ones I shoot with a firearm actually run farther. My belief on that is that the sound of the gunshot gets their adrenaline pumping and they go a little farther before they expire. Just my personal experiences...

Ability to recover a poorly hit animal depends on knowing where you hit it and what actionyou take next. I'll be the 1st to admit that not all animals I've recovered in the past 40 years have been perfect shoots, but I knew where I hit them and what to do next. Lord knows we all hope for great shots, but sometimes crapola happens. Dan |

Lung/Heart Shot - 20-40 yards on adrenaline
Spine shot - 0 yards... Gut shot 60 -1000 yards[8D]...let them stiffen up and get them in the morning...stay on the deer runs..and use your instincts when tracking... NEVER...follow a gut shot deer SAME DAY...be conservative...go home and sleep on it. Brian |

eerrrrr, ummm, what was that question again??? I got a little distracted by a certain avatar......[&:][8D]

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Since I started shooting 3 blade snuffers my blood trails have been shortened allot. They use to be anywhere from 80 to 120 yards with a double lung shot with a 2 blade head. With my snuffers I average anywhere from 40 to 60 yards on a double lung shot.

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
The buck I killed this year went 20 yards after I sent an 620 grain arrow tipped with a Snuffer thru both lungs, maybe 20 yards, then fell over dead!

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Let me think. Last ten critters with a muzzy 3 blade head. [:-]
Solid heart shot/double lung BB, 30 yards. heart shot hog, 2 yards. (turned to chomp teeth at me, took a few steps backwards, fell over) Low heart shot buck/1 lung, 75 yards. Double lung doe, 30 yards. heart/1 lung doe, 50 yards. Liver/lung Buck, 60 yards. Double lung doe/partial heart, 40 yards. Liver/lung doe, 40 yards. Double lung BB, 30 yards. Heart/lung Buck, 120 yards. (go figure) = 47.7 yards for an average. |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Anywhere from 200yards to 45 yards. WIth my rage 3blades, they dont go far when the arrow is put in the right spot;)

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
I think it has been said that 7 seconds on a double lung hit. That can be 20 yards or 100.This will usually have very good blood trails and anyone that has a little patience should be able to recover these quite easily.
However,a mature buck can be a little more stubborn. This is what you see most on TV.Mine went a good 200 yards this year but not sure if I had good enough penetration to hit the second lung.I never looked when I drug them out on the ground.[&:] |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Thanks guys for the input. I guess deer don't run as far as I thought they would with a good shot. I was a little worried about getting into bow hunting in the thick woods at our property if I had to track and retrieve from long distances.

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
I've never had one go over eighty yards. Most go 20-30 yards. I have had one that dropped in it's tracks.

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Pop both bubbles in the center on a relaxed deer and it's 30 yards or less
Both lungs far enough back to get some liver and the deer usually goes 100 to 150yards Hit the heart and count on a harder run butstill usually 120 yards or less. Liver hit is the most unpredictable. They can go right down or last for hours. A liver shot deer will lay down quickly but not necessarily expire quickly. Best to wait 4-6 hours and he wont be far. Bad hit that happens to catch an artery, lethal but also very unpredictable. Sure sign is a heavy trail at first that is narrow with spaced out puddles. Thats almost always a muscle hit. The puddles indicate that he stopped or slowed down. Back off and wait. If you gat an artery, he'll be there. If you didn't, the deer will often recover. Guts, they usually lay down close but if bumped once, they may go far. Never follow a gut hit till at least 6 hours later. Better yet, wait overnight if weather allows. Bump him twice and you might as well forget finding it before the crows do |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Most of mine lately don't make it past 50-60 yds
|
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Average=45 yds for the deer i have shot.
Last year i shot a buck quatering away and took out lung and the top third of the heart and the deer ran 90 yds. This year i shot a buck quatering away the arrow entered behind the last rib and came out a few inches behind the shoulder and the deer made it 15 yds. It all depends on the shot |
RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
After 22 bowkills, I expect a tracking job of about 50-60 yards with a double lung hit on a deer.

RE: Average distance a deer runs after being arrowed
Ihave never gun hunted biggame but this is my 52nd year of Bowhunting-I'm 67(Yep, I am OLD).
Ihave killed lots of different species-Elk, Caribou, Bears, Whitetail, Buffalo,Mule Deer, wild hogs & more. I'm guessing over 150 animals. I kept records for my personal use for years & my average shot with a recurve was 20 yds. & average blood trail was less than 30 yds. 38 animals with recurve, wood, forgewood & fiberglass arrows with MA3 blade & bear razor Heads. Mostly Double lungs. The rest have been with a compound-Dartons mostly. Average shot is STILL 20 yds. & the average blood trail is STILL 30 yds & most are double lungs.I have had 8 drop in their tracks including one big Whitetail & other Whitetails, 1 Caribou& a hog. Wild Hogs inMY experience are the toughest of any animal I have shot to kill & have been charged by them when mortally shot. My farthest animal traveled was a 4x3 Elk shot through the heart& went (guessing) 150 yds & was still alive when I found him1 hour later& took a 2nd arrow through the lungs as he started to get up. I had one Whitetail Buck travel about 80 yds with a Liver shot. I have taken 2 hogs this year at under 15 yds & one went 20 yds & the other 20 feet. 2 does this year & neither went over 30 yds-both double lungs-one at 25 yds & one at 10 yds.. Pic is where she fellfrom a quarter toward me shot-blood is exit. ![]() |
