RE: To Mount or not to mount
Bluetick, congatulations. Great job. If you feel you should mount it, do it. I bet you will feel great 20 years down the road and can see your first deer.

RE: To Mount or not to mount
I didn't think I had a deer worth mounting till reading how some of you feel about it...and I do too as matter of fact! Most my hunts have been alone or proir to digital cameras(easy to save photo's).I have a number of little cull fork horns and 6's on garage walls that each have their own memories.I also have a decent axis and real respectable fallow...they are on a shelf in shop due to the thoughts contected with them.If cost is not an issue then mounting is your choiceto preseve the legacy.

RE: To Mount or not to mount
Like several others here will tell you, it's your choice what you want to mount. If you're proud of the deer, then get it mounted, if you're not sure you want to spend a lot of money, you can always do a European/Indian mount on it.

RE: To Mount or not to mount
Congrats on your first. It's a job well done.
One thing you can think about is doing a euro mount now, have your caped tanned, and then mount the two together down the road. I do this all the time. Once tanned, the skins last indefinately. There is no need to rush into having your deer mounted today! I have many in this condition presently. When I grow up and can afford a trophy room, I'll start mounting mine. Best wishes Will |
RE: To Mount or not to mount
I got my first buck with a muzzle loader, a 6 pointer, I got him mounted and I am damn proud of it....!!!!
I love remembering that special day:D My buddy also got his first buck the following year (6 pt.) and didn't mount it, as his boss mentioned the same things your Dad did. Now every time he comes over he complains that he didn't get his buck mounted, he say's "I should have got my buck mounted", "I should have got my buck mounted" and just shakes his head! Too late now, for him, but not for YOU! If you have the money then do it, you won't regret it Let's see a pic and story to go with it, I'm excited for you! |
RE: To Mount or not to mount
well thanks alot guys and gals im gunna get it mounted which way do you think would look better with the bigger side of the rack out or the smaller heres a pic http://i409.photobucket.com/albums/pp178/bluetickhunter/Picture056.jpg
he is a 4pnt on the right with good mass and a 2 on the left with alil less mass The Story: Well went to our spot before sunrise got set up sat till 830 didnt see anything. My buddy comes running down theridge said he seen a group coming along the ridge and to wait there, he was going up farther. Well after 45minuets i figured they were not comming threw i started to slow hunt to him. It was snowing lightly and we already had 7inches from the night before i get to a small brook i know they run and i hear him shoot, so i get ready he comes loping of the hill at 40yards and i wack him.As im reloading a bigger buck comes but i dont care i knew i hit mine. My Buddy comes down and we track him no blood what so ever only alil where i hit him and hair. He went 100yards uphill my buddie told me it didnt look good then we found him at the top of the hill dead in mid run i hit him high but still took out the lungs. I got all excited and called my dad and what not then gutted him out and checked him in was the best day ive had hunting in a long time. also want to add i hate buckshot this deer got his with buckshot last year and we think that is why his antlers are deformed on top of that he also got buckshot in the neck/ opposite shoulder this year looks like guys dont know the limit distance to buckshot im surrprised he aint dead both shoulders and soem pellets in the neck he weighted 175lbs dressed and i only got backstraps tenderloins and the rear quarter off of him about 40lbs of meat the rest was junk its a shame and it isnt the first deer ive seen this happen to matt |
