What's your best hunting tip?
Best does not imply but rather specifies- one. Now, I know that there isn't only one trick of the trade that makes us successful because obviously there are many used in combination that do. However, if you had to pick one to contribute to this thread, what would it be? If everyone pitches in one, eventually we will get a nice collection of the best of the best.
Mine is one that I learned a few times already but had to learn again this year... Never discount any noise in the woods as not being deer. This year during the gun opener, I arrowed a buck. 2 min later I heard a "squirrel running back and forth and in circles". When the "squirrel" showed up under my stand I wasn't ready resulting in a missed opportunity. What's yours? |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
If you have a good thing going, be persistent and don't be too quick to give up on it; good things often take time.

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Remain motionless, as an incoming deer will pick you off!
Remember, you most likely won't see the deer the doesn't walk bye you. Meaning... Imagine a deer just about ready to come into your setting, maybe an oak flat or a field edge? He stands almost motionless while scanning and scent checking for 10 or 15 minutes behind some bushes, before making his way into your view. You are unaware of his presence... Unfortunately you have an itch or a mosquito that your swatting away and he sees you. He then turns around, never to be seen by you, and walks away. ~ The damaging factor may not be that day's sit, it may be an education for the deer for the rest of the season. * This also goes hand in hand with scent control. |

You have zero chance if you are not hunting!;) Dan |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Be a mobile hunter and carry your setup in the woods each time and tear down each time, and always hunt with the wind in your favor. Also dont waste your $$ on scents, lures, urines, etc
|
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Be PATIENT!! The more time on stand equalsmore deer seen/shot opps.;)
|
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Be Optimystic. I think I am a great Elk hunter, and have been lucky enough to kill several good bulls. They have always been in my element! But when I got stationed in MIchigan, Whitetail became a new thing! I took my licks like the rest of you. And I learned! Took me one season of learning before I could catch up with a good buck.
The advice I have gained from this site has helped me tremendously! Thanks everyone! |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
A few of them I would have said have been taken.. especially about Being Scent free and most of Be in the Woods!
Another is to always be confident that it can happen at any time and be ready to draw back that arrow. I don't know how many times over the course I have been sitting there thinking thatthere is no way that anything was gonna happen and all of a sudden, there was a shot. Or sitting there watching deer 300-400 yards away, and just knowing that there was no possible way that they would ever get any closer to you. Then for no appaent reason, one deer decided to take off and bolt right over to you and here they all come. Anthing can and will happen out there when your sitting there with stick and string. Be READY!! |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Oh, and most importantly....u can't kill a deer lieing on the couch. If the opportunity is there,, hunt.
|
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
ORIGINAL: MN/Kyle Hunt Hard/Be Aggressive. I once questioned a friend about his hunting methods and he said: "If I hunt any different I'm afraid I'll spook something." I said: "Spook something?" "I plan on Killing it!!"[8D] Dan |

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Think outside of the box too. This setup below was done in a pinoak tree roughly 8 ft off of the ground, only tree possible so make it work, or don't hunt. I could have jumped on this buck and killed him with a knife to the juggler. Too many people would have never went to the little bit of brain power it took to rig this setup. The tree was to small of diamter to hook my stand to, so I made the tree thicker. The results show the proof.

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
After some more thought I came up with these tips regarding spotting deer. Look for them low to the ground. Most peopleare looking for them too high from ground level.Look for horizonal lines in the woods. Most things in the woods are vertical. And lastly, when looking for deer, shift your head (even a few inches make a big difference)periodically, it gives a whole new viewof the woods.;)

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT INSIDE AND OUT...BE CONFIDENT..
YOU'LL NEVER REALLY DEVELOP A FEEL FOR ARCHERY KILLS UNLESS YOU PUT DEER ON THE GROUND... IF YOU'RE NEW AT THIS..YOU GOTTA GET KILLS UNDER YOUR BELT...KILL SOME DOE(S) |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
I agree with Hoytail Hunter.
I heard what I thought was "birds" wrestling around behind my stand. I did, however, remain ready; and suddenly a doe CHARGED out from behind my stand. What a shock!!! I drew back, and shot before I even realized it. It happened so fast. I would love to have it on film. Because, honestly, I don't really know how I even got her. But, it became my first bow kill, and one I will always remember. I will, from now on, never assume it's not a deer! |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Hunt in areas where others are not...get away from people/other hunters.

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Trust your instinct on shot placement -
If it fell like a good hit it probably is - and if not - back out -and come back later - much later if need be. FH |

RE: What's your best hunting tip?
I have two..
1st...Learn to tune your own equipment yourself, there aren't any mobile bowshops that come to the woods if something happens. 2nd. practice, practice,practice!.. I don't know how many people I've seen that could hardly hit a 3-d target on a controlled course, yet they still go hunting. |
RE: What's your best hunting tip?
Hunt for you and have fun doing it!
