Ground blind ideas

I'm gonna make several ground blinds for '09. My question is....what do you guys who do this sit on? Sounds simple enough.....as I took my turkey stool with me last night. Worked fine. But it's still something I have to carry in.

Got to thinking.....if I planned my ground blinds around having a tree in the middle of it....I could use one of those tree seats (summit sells one) and carry that in to each set (if I'm going to have to carry something, anyways) and attach it to the tree. The I thought further.....and decided I could just use the upper portion of my LW climber for that purpose.

If you hunt ground blinds....what do you use? I could probably set some 5 gal buckets in each one.....but that seems "trashy" to the woods I hunt.

Do most of you shoot from a sitting positio or do most of your shots come from a knee?

RE: Ground blind ideas

I've tried the tree seats, and haven't had much luck, mostly due to my considerable bulk. I can't get far enough away from the tree get drawn while sitting on the seat. I have used a standard metal folding chair with good success. I sit so that I am facing at a 90 degree angle to where I want/expect to shoot so that I shouldn't have to move too much. I have done the bucket thing too, but my ass got REAL tired, real quick. There are a bunch of good, small chairs out now that have fold up legs. I used on up in Canada last year and it was comfortable, with a swivel seat as well. A bucket designed for dove hunting has also worked for me, since they are usually a little taller.

I have one of those little fold up chairs that I bought at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill [8D] Very small and light. It has a long strap on it. I throw it around my neck and let it rest on my back. I usually sit from a seated position.

My dad uses a spinning stool.

I have one like that too, NY (seat). It's the PERFECT height for shooting out of my blind.

Hard on the butt.....but the perfect size.

My turkey seat (got from the NWTF) is the same seat (only camo) but it has a backrest. I strapped it to my shoulder yesterday....and it rides in really well. I got to thinking about the tree seat because it would also help to break up my outline (having a tree incorporated into my blind). I guess I'll get the LW upper out and try to shoot that way, soon. Good point, Mike. I haven't checked to see if I can with the longbow.

RE: Ground blind ideas

I have attached the top part of my climber to a tree while using a blind as well, my best advise is to put the seat a little higher then normal seat level. this will allow you to lean forward to make your shot with bow, and not be so close to the tree when you draw. Might not be as comfortable, but its the price we pay in order to be ready.

RE: Ground blind ideas

Do a search for torges tree seat (aw here it is). It's a design you can build yourself cheap. It is a seat you attach to a tree. It works well but I don't think there's a single solution that works in every situation. I have a three leg seat, a torgues, and a armless camp chair. All work well in different terrain and situations. Another thing to lookat is the Nif-T-Seat. DoubleBull makes a blind seat as well but it's not cheap in any sense of the word.

Five gallon buckets work great Jeff. I don't worry about them being trashy as I just about always clean up a few things dumped where I park. I sure pack out more than I pack in.

I make blinds out of everything from split burlap bags to carpet scraps and they work. The added benny of a GB is they keep the wind off you a bit and feel 10 degrees warmer than being up the tree..You can also stretch your legs out when you want without the movement being an issue.

I think I remember you saying you always carry in your climber. It will be a pleasant change to walk right in and sit down...

I can't wait to see what these sell for. I loathe sitting in any hunting stool, bucket, etc...I can't last very long on them. This stool appears to be the cat's meow, depending on how much it sells for.[&:]

I will say though, walmart sells the smaller sized 4 leg collapsable lawnchairs for $4, they work perfect in a blind since they are the same height as other stools, they just are 100x more comfortable than any three legged hunting stool ever dreamed of being.

Thanks, Talon. I've seen the DB seat...but prefer the one I have to it. I'll check the other links.

Yep that's what I like most about it. And you don't even notice it's there carrying it in.

BBM...

I went out yestrday and stood for a while. Most frustrating hunt I've ever been on. I felt like I had a neon sign on me out there. It was bad. I actually came home before shooting light was up. I hope to be able to stand to shoot, some.....but to just walk out there....find a tree/spot....and stand there.....my hat's off to ya.

Thats me too. I've tried standing and find myself fidgeting WAY too much. I use a3 legfolding stool with a backrest. The same one I use in my pop-up.

GMMAT that buck I shot on the ground with my curve was while I was standing. I had been sitting but I stood up for a while and he came in while I was standing. Granted I had on a ghillie but I've shot turkey and deer from the ground standing with just normal camo or even no camo so it can be done. Just have good cover behind you breaking up your outline. Here's me on a torges seat wearing my ghillie.

Jeff - If you want to leave it there, maybe look into plastic lawn furniture. I use the green plastic chairs that you can buy dirt cheap at Lowes or HomeDepot, especially at the end of summer. Just make sure you can shoot out of them (arms might be in the way), sometimes I've bought the side tables for them and just sit on the table because its good for shooting off of.

I bought a dozen of them a few years ago for about $30, and I leave them in my ground blinds or even my built stands. they are comfy compared to a stool.

Im with ya on hunting from the ground more next year. In fact, this morning I sat in one of my stands, and watched 3 does walk within 10 yards broadside of my ground blind, which is about 60 yards awayfrom the stand. murphy's law.

I use a stool that I altered to make a lot quieter. Before that, in past turkey seasons, its always beena five gallon bucket.

I bring a camping type lawn chair....super comfortable, but too low to shoot from, I have to stand up. I would just rather be extra comfortable in the cold than anything else.

RE: Ground blind ideas

I've used theresin lawn chairs, swivel stools and a folding sling-type seat for ground blinds. The resin chairs are great if you are leaving them out, otherwise I prefer the sling chair - just miss the backrest sometimes.

I try to make mine against a tree(to use a strap on seat) or in an existing blow-down which means I often can find a log to sit on. In the rare cases one of those isn't present where I want to have a blind, I use a bucket. I would NOT recommend a stool with legs, those legs tend to sink way into the ground after hours of sitting. I have long legs - the most important thing for me is to use something that is relatively high off the ground so it isn't uncomfortable after 2 or more hours.

I've hunted from ground blinds a bit and I like to use my seat that I have for turkey hunting from a blind. The one thing you have to be careful of is how it will react to the cold. I took one of the Ameristepseatsout last year in late season and it creaked and moaned like an old house. Naturally I didn't see a thing.

The turkey seat I use is an Ameristep with the back that folds up. I placed some camo duct tape in areas where I suspect noise and that seems to work well.

I like the seats because they are lightweight and easy to get in and out, yet more comfortable than the other options.

I like my comfort. Most of the seats listed above would never keep me in the blind all day. In the past I have used a plastic lawn chair. They are very quite, cheap, lite, and fairly comfortable. But they do not swivel, which I think is a must for blind hunting.

This year I used the "Texas Hunter Shooting Chair" (http://www.texashunterproducts.com/shchsc.html). I love this chair. It is a little pricey though, but perfect for all day blind hunting.

I don't know if any of you use this one or not. I sat in it at a local sporting goods store and it was pretty comfy. I like the fact that the legs are adjustable too. The only downside is the price.

DUDE, we think alike!!!!!!!!! I have been wondering why no one puts out a decent ground blind chair. I have a Double Bull and it sux, as all chairs I have tried do. I saved that link u posted as a favorite and will be watching for this.Cool...thanks for posting.

I gotta be off of the ground a ft or 2 to shoot accurately. How do you guys shoot a bow with your butt touching the ground? Not to mention shifting will cause noise with leaves.

GMMAT 12-16-2008 06:20 PM

RE: Ground blind ideas

Don I can't shoot my trad bow with my butt on the ground....but the noise issue I eliminate really quickly (as I do when I'm in any ground blind). I shift the leaves out from under me when I set up.....and get to bare earth.

hardcorehunter 12-16-2008 06:26 PM

RE: Ground blind ideas

I feel that when I go to the ground from a tree, I have severely eliminated my shot opportunities, due to the view has dramatically been restricted, not to mention clean lanes for arrow flight. And that is sitting 2- 2 1/2 ft off of the ground. I am not going to handicap myself anymore and lower myself down another 2- 2 1/2 ft and sit on my butt. Treestands are more successful than ground hunting, mainly, due to increased shot opportunities. The treestand hunter will out kill a ground pounder ANYDAY. Elevation is the ticket, is what I am sayin'.

I don't shoot with my but on the ground either, It's just there when I'm relaxing and there's no deer around. When I do shoot I'm on one knee or both knee's. I also remove all of the leaves and sticks that are where I'll be sitting on the ground. When the snow Is on the ground, I don't have to remove anything. If the snow Is crunchy I'll loosing It up by stirring It up some.

For some, others like to hunt different ways and don't really worry about out killing one another! I hunt for different animals while hunting from the ground, sometimes my deerhunt turns into a rabbit rather quickly! ;) Never had to many rabbits come walking by my treestand!:D:D

No, but I was comfy 2nite. Have a snowstorm goin on..3 degrees above 0 with windchill ontop...Too cold for TeeJay, but not for me[8D] Wouldn't want my butt sitting on this ground.

Took a pic so guys could see a DB on a Badlands 2200 pack.

The only way to stand hunt in the cold;)

Saw 5 does was all. The storm had everything hunkered. No shots on the does..2 far. I brought the Tribute out for the rest of season..it was feeling ignored since the new Guardian came into the scene.
