How much do you guys spend
Ok guys as it seems alot of people are winding down on the hunting season and talking about their new bows or next years setup. I have to ask. How much do you all spend each year on bows and accesories. Not including arrow. I spent $300 this year on a new compound and it was hard to justify. My last was $100 14 -15 years and many deer ago. I would not have bought the new one had the old one not finaly started to develop cracks in the limb (actually the cam pocket brace, hard to explain) How do you justify a new bow every year.
I think its cool you guys can. It just a ton of money every year and I'd have a hard time spending some of the numbers I have heard every year...or even every other year. And some poeple are buying multiple bows. Come on guys share the wealth with me! LOL Just kidding. So is it just having the newest thing. And are bows the only thing you do this with or are you buying new stuffoften with other stuff like cars, houses, wives..;)..LOL Just wondering. :D |
RE: How much do you guys spend
I went through several bows in short time. I've ought 4 new hunting bows in 4 seasons....but I've come full circle and own one I've previously shot (the BT Ally). I've gone through several arrow setups.....a couple sights......two rests......and 2-3 releases.....3-4 stabilizers.....several BH choices.......looking for "the one".
I crammed a few years of this into a short time, though....and think I've found "the one" (setup) I'll have for a few years (3-4). I don't see buying anything but arrows and BH's for the next few seasons. I'm content (once I feel secure with the new BH choice). Nothing against buying a new bow/rest/sight/etc....evey year. Good for them (those who do so). |
RE: How much do you guys spend
I was the type to own a new bow every year or two at most. I went through them pretty quickly a couple years back. :D That was until I got my hands on my 07 Bowtech Allegiance. I am not giving this one up. It simply shoots very well for me and is as fast or faster than most of the new bows all things being equal.
Of course getting married and having a child on the way really puts a damper on a lot of things too.:D That and the fact that these companies are asking WAY too much for these things now. It really is getting far out of hand. When I first got into this "addiction" with bows, I went and bought a brand new Hoyt Cybertec in I believe 2001. I paid 525.00 for it. Now, the new top end bows from the same company are 800. In seven years, they've almost doubled in price. It is ridiculous. |
RE: How much do you guys spend
Alot of the guys trade up each year, which isn't as bad as buying new each year. If you keep your accessories, you can usually trade up a previous year model for 200ish bucks, 300 tops.
I too felt I would keep my bow for a LONG time, but Hoyts new offering this year really has me thinking. Whenever they begin to sell used this spring/summer, I better not stumble across a decent deal, because I will trade up for an alphamax if the price is right. |
RE: How much do you guys spend
This year I spent about $90 on a new sight, but sold my old sight for $30... so not too much... I do all my own arrow work and last year I bought 3 doz. shafts on Ebay for 45/doz so I'm set for a while on that.
My bow was purchased in summer05, so this was my 4th season w/ it. I hope to get another season or two out of it. My only anticipated expense this year will be a new string... but thats a maybe. Getting married, buying a house, another car, and having a kid basically destroyed my hunting budget, plus I spent some decent coin on crabbing gear this year. But that pays for itself quickly when crabs are going for 165 a bushel, I caught probably 1500 worth of crabs last summer :D. Thankfully when I was single I had enough extra cash flow to get myself set up for a long time. Plus I use my credit card rewards for gear at Cabelas & Dickssporting goods, which is usually $300 + a year |
RE: How much do you guys spend
For many years I hunted with lower-mid end gear & held on to bows for 8 years or so. But as time goes by and I got better jobs, more money became available to spend on what I enjoy. I've nowbought 5 bows in 3 years. But I had limb problems with one which forced me to buy the next one(07 Ally) I loved that one so much I bought a 2nd one but with lighter limbs. Both Allegiences were bought used and Igot decent deals on them so its not too bad. I still don't shell out a lot of money on accessories. I have bought some additional camo, targets & treestands the last couple seasons too. I hope that I have no issues with my Allys cause I really like them and don't want to buy any more bows for a while.

RE: How much do you guys spend
rybo, them Ally's are sweeties aren't they? ;) I believe its still the best bow Bowtech has ever built.
As far as accessories go, I will usually do a lot of research before buying anything. I make purchases on these items based off of a lot of research. Example, my Spot Hogg sight. Lets face it, 150+ dollars for a site is a lot of jing to put down for a sight. But, I didn't hesitate because I knew, based off of lots of research that this would be a sight that will last a long time. I'm very hesitant to buy the latest, greatest thing that comes out. I usually wait to see what others say about it first, then make a decision. Every year, we get bombarded with the "must have" equipment of the year. For me, last year it was the Octane quivers. While nice, I didn't see where it would outperform my Alpine. |
RE: How much do you guys spend
I'vebought 4bows in the last 20 years. I tend to keep them for awhile even though I feel like a kid in the candy storeevery time I go to the bow shop.

RE: How much do you guys spend
Not as much as I would like to;) In all seriousness, at 24 yrs old, I'm just now getting to the point in my life where I'm making a solid income, but with that comes the marriage this year and a new house/land, so buying will be down this year. Up to this point, I didn't go too crazy with my spending, because I couldn't. My first bow was purchased by my father when I was 13 (Golden Eagle Talon). I hunted with that for a while, then in 2000 I was given a Jennings Buckmaster 2000 for Christmas. I hunted with that bow up until the 2006 season, when I bought my Ross CR334, then hunted with that for one season, sold it in favor of my current 101st airborne because I was making the switch to left handed. I did spend more on arrows, sights, releases, etc, because I wanted to have quality gear, but I haven't upgraded frequently, and I doubt I will much in the near future. If I could, however, you bet your butt I would be:D I love trying out new gear.

RE: How much do you guys spend
I like to switch things up once in a while becuase it keeps things fresh. Since the fall hunting seasons seem to come and go so quickly, it gives me an opportunity to 'still feel like I'm doing something' to tide me over until the next hunting trip....It's just something fun for me to do - something I enjoy.
Some years I'm more aggressive than others. Maybe just a new rest or sight, try some different arrows etc. - if I havemore than expectedextra money, then I may end up making some larger purchases.... |
RE: How much do you guys spend
I spend most of my hobby related income on archery stuff. I went from an ultratec to a general when they first came out. Then I traded my general for my 101st. Trading the bows doesnt really hurt you that bad once you have a certain amount of buying power. Even selling the ultratec which was an 05 i believe, i sold it loaded with hoyt accessories and still got 450 bucks for it so when buying the general i only had to fork out around 200 or so to get that bow. Today I actually sold my 101st to a guy bare bow, for 550 b/c i will be shooting Hoyts for a shop for 09 so once again, im not losing much and it makes me happy. I dont trade or buyjust to say its cool or whatev like some fanboys around here do[:'(]I shoot ALOT and this is what i do. I shoot and practice all year long religiously b/c it is self satisfying to me, and i thoroughly enjoy the sport. I shoot competitively as welland I cant get away from it.
Myaccessories I stick with. I dont think i will ever sell my extreme sight. Its perfect for hunting and does its job every single time without a single issue ever! Iwill shoot Limb Drivers until I find something that i really think is better!jmo. Ihadan LD before i wason VT's staff so that isnt why i shoot them. I love easton axis arrows for hunting, and i love my victory arrows for targets. Also, my little bitty goose release is another thing i plan on holding on too forever. It feels great and performs the way i want it to. All of the target stuff is well... rather expensive, but once you buy most of it, you wont need to buy anymore after that, which is why i went ahead and purchased the sure-loc setup with a viper scope. I know for most people, buying tons of archery stuff would be pointless b/c all they do is hunt and thats cool. If your bow is just a weapon, than i as well dont see the point in trading and swapping all of the time but if thats you thing, than have at it. As many say, the deer doesnt care what kind of equipment you have, or how fast the arrow was going when it went through it, so whatever works, will continue to work forever. Derek Derek |
RE: How much do you guys spend
Good answers guys. It totaly makes sense to try to find the right bow. I get that.
I guess when I was doing that to begin with I didn't have the cash to get into a bunch. sure I always wanted the new stuff but I was in the military with a new family. Now I have a little more but still can't afford to much with the prices as they are. And if I spent that kind of money on one it would be the last as my wife would kill me for spending that much. $300 for the Bear Instinct package seemed to bea good choice. So far I am impressed with this setup. It didn't take long to get good groups at 30 yards so I've been taking it hunting. Like I said it replacing a 14 year old bow. Trading up I can see I guess and for sure buying used I can see. But I cannot justify (for myself) spending thousands every year on a bow. If you enjoy it and can afford it more power to you. I just realized my wife should realy know I love her. After all think of all the stuff I gave up for her. All the bows I could have bought! The things we do for them! LOL |
RE: How much do you guys spend
Well as I started adding things up I quickly realized I should stop. It would be in my best interest. I will list what I have bought this year and you guys can do the math. This is sinceSeptember.
09 Bowtech Admiral-Hunting rig Ripcord rest Goldtip XT Hunters Sword 3rd plane Micros Octane stab 08 Bowtech Commander-Target rig Trophy Taker SS 2 Easton X7 Eclipse 2712 Sword Titan 4x lens & 6x lens Posten slim jimmz stab 08 Bowtech 101st Airborne-3D rig Ripcord Gold tip 30x's Sword 3rd plane Micros Octane 11.5" stab I had a couple others in between these, but I sold them and these are what I have today. Not sure of the exact amounts butprobably over 3K I am guessing. However, I should be content and happy for a while at least. |
RE: How much do you guys spend
I don't buy much once I geta bow I like, I have a feeling I will be shooting my 04 Bowtech Liberty and Fox Archery Breed Recurve for a long time. I guess I am atight-wad when it comes to spending money on bows, I just don't see the need if what I have works great and I shoot it well. Even if I wasnt living on a school teachers salary and making millions I doubt I would spend the extra $ on bows. I like to get real comfortable with a bow and keep it. Normal maintenance and string replacement is about it.

RE: How much do you guys spend
The only reason I got a new bow was because I got a heck of a deal on it. Unless something else like that comes around, I dont see myself upgrading for another 4-5 years.I cant complain one bit about the setup ive got now, other than the fact that i'll probably switch back to 4in vanes next year, love the feathers but they are just too fragile for me....

RE: How much do you guys spend
I spent probably in the area of 3 grand on hunting related items this year. If you want to count the things I let my wifebuy so she doesn't give me to much grief about hunting then we are talking well over ten grand.

RE: How much do you guys spend
More than i want. I usually try to stick with one bow for a few years. If i stay with one bow, i can only get better at shooting it. I have a Hoyt Trykon right now. Just put a new Winners Choice string on it and it shoots just like a new bow. Has yet to let me down.
|
RE: How much do you guys spend
Other than broad heads, not much. I have been shooting the same recurve since the early 80s. And the bows I make and keep dont really cost anything because I sale enough, that I actually make money on the ones I keep.;)
As for compounds, I put one together 8 years ago and have no need to up grade. |

I probably shoot upwards of 6k arrows per year. Only two or three of those arrows are at deer every year, so you can see why I would want a bow that i will love and enjoy shooting, vs some, whose main goal is to kill deer, and they could care less what bow it is or anything like that. I guess ive gotten to where hunting isnt my main focus anymore, its the competitive self satisfaction, that shooting gives me, b/c i like most dont just have money laying around to throw away, but archery is my #1 hobby so thats what my spending money goes to. That and the gf;) Im hoping that i get settled in for a while this year with my Hoyts though. Im going with an AM35, and around tax time, imlooking to get an older ultra or proelite for 4-500 bucks that will be strictly target. Derek |
RE: How much do you guys spend
Not to much (80.00 to 90.00 dollars a year on bow hunting stuff). This winter I will be buying a different recurve, not sure If It's going to be a brand new one or used. That could get spendy!![>:] The recurve I'm using now I've had for 14 straight years.

RE: How much do you guys spend
This is a question that really should not be asked. I am sure there wives that drop in just to what the husbands are always on here talking about and heaven forbid my wife ever find out how much money i really spend each year on hunting. I have never added it all up, in fact I always have my guy at the pro shop throw my receipt away, just to help to cover my tracks. If I were to guess, between leases, bows, arrows, BHs and everything else, I would guess it would be in the neighborhood of 2-3K dollars. DON'T TELL ME WIFE!!!!!!!
