I would have to say 3 things stand out when someone is not getting a high percentage of pass thrus. 1.) Broadhead choice 2.) KE 3.) What is being hit on the offside of the deer.

I shot 3 does last year. 2 broadside, 1 quartering away. All pass thrus with 60lbs. 100 gr Slick Tricks.

This year I shot 1 with 63lbs, same broadhead, slightly quartering away. Heart shot, buried broadhead in offside shoulder socket (Could barely pull it out standing on the deer). This tells me alot about where to shoot deer for pass thrus. The same scenario can happen to anyone.

For what it's worth:
I've bowkilled 22 deer. Typically I've had about 60 LB KE (.42 momentum) at the bow. All deer were 22 yards or less, broadside to slightly quartering.
16 of the 22 deer were with mechanicals (mostly Rocket Miniblaster, Steelhead, Sidewinder), 6 with fixed.
I've had a pass through 19/22 times (One time I hit spine and twice I used a 2'' mechanical).
86% pass through rate on deer with the majority of the arrows under 400 grains.

If you had the arrow (pass through) you'd likely have a better idea of WHEN they are/will be dead.
