Default All this talk of hunting from the ground got me thinking.

All these threads about hunting from the ground got me to thinking, and I decided to start a new thread instead of hijacking someone else's.

Here's my story of the 1 spot and stalk hunt that worked out for me. This is going to be a long one, so bare with me, and hope you enjoy.

Me and my friend had just gotten back to the truck after an unsuccessful morning when we spotted a doe feeding about 400 yds away on the other side of a cattle pasture. He jokingly said" you should sneak over there and shoot her". Of course, with nothing more than 3-4 inch tall grassbewteen us, I said no way it will ever work, but what have I got to lose! There was a small rise between us, so when her head went down, I started moving in. I had made my way to about 100yds out when the rise dropped back off, so I figured that would be it. Luckily, she was working away, and back into the brush on the far side of the field. I used the fence posts as cover and moved up to a tree near the last place I saw her after she had worked back into the brush. I was straining SOO hard to try to spot her bedded somewhere in front of me when I heard a limb crack just off to my left. I SLOWWWWLLLLLYYYYY shifted me eyes that way, and there she is coming back toward me from the creek, feeding about 20yds away! HOLY CRAP, I can't believe I got this close, but now Idon't know how I'm ever going to get turned and drawn on her. Well, as she's feeding she turns her head back the other way, so I turn and draw. CRAP, she's at a pretty hard quartering to angle,12 yds away, but I'm not comfortable with that shot! After what seems like 2 hours holding back, she finally turns broadside. I settle the pin and let it fly! She take's 2 hops, and stops to try to figure out what happened, and I can see by the blood streaming, that she aint going far. Then she tries to run, and makes it about 10yds and she's down! It all caught up to me then, and I just collapse! I finally regain my composure, and walk back to the field edge to way my friend over from where he's sitting in the truck. It was an AWESOME day that I got to share with a great friend, and one I'll never forget!

Thats an awesome story! Those old does are some very wary creatures. Its quite an accomplishment to stalk up on one of them!
