Shed Hunting Traps

Do you think it is unethical to set up shed traps? By this, I mean taking chicken wire and wrapping it around a tree making a V and putting corn in the middle in hopes that the buck will hit the wire with its antler and they will fall. Just wondering if you guys think it is ethical. I believe it is unethical, and will only walk to find them!!

RE: Shed Hunting Traps

If bucks never died from it? How could it be unethical?
BUT, i've seen far to many bucks tangled up and left to die in wire fences, traps, left out strands, etc....so yea, id say not a good idea just incase the buck isnt ready to shed when that antler gets caught.

Well, dont you think it is sorta cheating just to walk out there and pic up sheds that you didnt work for?

No, I don't.

I don't work for sheds.

I wander around looking for them. I happen upon them.

I don't work for them.

Ummm... wouldn't you actually work harder if you were to build a contraption and bait the thing rather than just walking around? I think that these sort of devices are fine as long as you check them daily and then remove them after the shedding season.

RE: Shed Hunting Traps

I believe they are illegal in Illinois, as any kind of feeding station is banned---doesn't matter if you are hunting over it or not.

But even if it was legal, I still think I would prefer to wander around the woods and find sheds. I would think that if a buck was coming into a feeder during the winter, that would be removed shortly after that where you found his sheds wouldn't give you a true reading as to where he may actually be living6 months from then. I plan to shed hunt every chance I get this winter. I want to find some good sheds, but my main goal is to put as much effort as I can into scouting my area. Just my theory on the matter though.

Unethical? Seriously? No. Granted it wouldn't be as much fun. If baiting is legal by your Department of Wildlife, then I don't see the issue. But if it makes you feel better, put two hay bales about 8" apart and put the corn in the middle of that. Hay is an unrefined substance, wire is.

So... is it ethical to plant an apple tree so that it drops fruit in your yard or should we walk to find those as well?[&:]

Just playin the devil's advocate here, but if it's cheating to just "walk out there and pick up a shed" is it cheating to pick one up while your in the woods for any other purpose than shed hunting? Say for instance, turkey hunting or coyote hunting?

My least favorite word (ethical) is now being applied to way people hunt for shed antlers.:eek:I'd like to add that I'man unethical mushroom hunter. I just walk right up and pick them, its like they don't even have a fighting chance!!

Yes.. it is illegal in the state of Illinois.

And I'm not really all that sure if the author of this post has ever shed-hunted before. In fact.. I don't think he/she has.

I've been doing it for years.. and to say its not work is an insult to my legs.. which put on 120+ hours of walking for about 25 sheds every year. The miles are ridiculous.[&:]

If thats not work.. I don't know what is.

I don't get this ethical/unethical mentality these days. Some speak as if the word "ethical" is a dirty word, but its not.

I'm not saying its unethical but I know the only way I'd even think about setting an antler shed trap is if the buck can get away if his antlers are not ready to fall off. I've seen too many bucks carrying full racks into late March and the first of April. Ain't no way I'd use wire.

I'd say it's unethical in IL seeing as how feeding deer is illegal.

Otherwise, it just seems like a waste of time.

Considering the woods that I have to walk through, I have to use traps. I would wish for anyone to be dropped in the middle of these hellatious briar patches and have to look for sheds.

i dont think its unethical. just make the trap so that he wont get caught up in it if hes not ready

What about something like this?? I dont know if this would exactly tangle the deer up to the point where he couldnt get out? I dont know though, it definately seems more "ethical" then chicken wire but who knows?!?!?

Up until the big baiting post... I wouldhave saidit was about tromping andlocation. Since most were found in ag fields or CRP bordering ag fields... it's all about baiting since both are artificial. :( We are masters atbaiting for sheds!!! Yehaw!!!!!![8D] :D

TEmbry No sheds were harmed in their capture. No laws were broken. They were ethically taken.

Duke

It's an old moose shed the coyote had a hay day with. Looked to be quite a few years old. It was my first moose shed.

Tim

We have found a total of 3. Bit rare to find them after8 or 9years of looking.

Some of you are forgetting that there is a MAJOR difference in terrian across the US. As OneShot stated, here in the south east we do not have open grassy lands like you will find in the midwest. Our land is mostly thick, nasty, and often swampy. I look and look every year, but rarely find more than two or three sheds a year. They are nearly impossible to find here.

As for the "trap". You don't have you use chicken wire. You can use a single strand of wire and pour the corn directly under it. You can also pour the corn at the base of a tree (if the buck's rack is big enough). You can do it all sorts of ways.

I was just about to point out that moose paddle when I saw this post. Cool. I have a similar one from AK. The 07 picture reminds me of the antler arches in Jackson Hole.

same for me to... here is the way i look at it excluding the shed trap and its ethics. If you do the leg work you will learn so much more about your quarry. You will find where scrapping activity took place, rubbing. you might find that special bottle neck, buck bedding areasor just learn about your woods in general to be able to see the big picture when the season rolls around. No traps for me, Ill take the learning aproach to shedding ;)

I agree on the waste of time.

What have you learned by virtue of finding them in a centralized spot (using this method)?

buttonbuckmaster 12-10-2008 10:15 AM

RE: Shed Hunting Traps

Some guys just like to find tons of sheds. They don't care about scouting, etc. What do you learn by finding one in the middle of a cut corn field? That he got hungry? I walk for mine, don't own an ATV and baiting is illegal here. I have permission to shed hunt a few places that I can't deer hunt on. If legal, it wouldn't bother me to set up a device there, since hunting its out of the question.

RE: Shed Hunting Traps

I know some kids that started putting corn under some kind of rope contraption that they built to knock off sheds on deer and a small buck got his antlers in it and they didnt come off and it killed the deer. I am against this idea it is not a good one
