Bambi Vs venison

Do you think more people would be open to eating venison if Disney had never made the movie Bambi?

My wife made an excellent venison roast the other night and my 32 year old step daughter tried it and said it was delicious. As she was getting more my wife told her it was venison and she could not swallow the bite she had in her mouth. She said she just couldn' t do it because she thought of ' Bambi' .

I happen to think that calves are just as cute as fawns and they grow up to be our 1/4 pounder with cheese, give me a break!

I dont think it has to do that much with the movie... but just the fact that people are very hypocritical. They can eat beef but not deer? i mean Cmon.. BS!

I run a meat market, and people just don' t like to think that their food was once a live animal

I get a kick out of " free range" animals being more humane. It' s only a way for some to feel beter about the food they eat.

As long as the package is clean, and not icky the food as o.k.

As long as I don' t know what it is, I' ll enjoy it.

Perception is reality, and if meat from the store, is just that, meat from the store, it' s fine. Venison, on the other hand, was a poor deer, that some ruthless killer shot for fun, well, thats another story.

My wife won' t watch me butcher a deer-if she does she can' t eat it.If I bring it in the house wrapped in freezer paper, she' s O.K. with eating it.Most people don' t put much thought as to where their dinner comes from. They walk in the supermarket and there' s ground beef, steaks, roasts all packaged nice and neat when a week ago,it was alive on somebod' y farm.

I know it is hard to fathom but my wife and her family are the same way. Few years back I made a meatloaf and both my sister in laws ate it until I told them it was venison and they stopped on that very bite. Last week we had burgers on the grill and I had my venison About half way through my wifes burger I ask her how she liked the deer and she stopped eating it and got another one off the plate. Then my son and I started on her and she would not eat any more and wouldn' t believe me when I told her that she was eating beef. I thought that it was great myself. It is all in there heads or maby they just like all the chemicals in the beef???????????????????:D;)

I would say that the movie Bambi is associated with hunters. I can' t count how many times " I have been called a bambi killer" or other references to the movie.

I think the idea of eating wild live animals is foreign to some and they may feel guilty or bad for doing so. Also venison has a reputation for being gamey, tough and very different in taste and texture from beef. However hunters know this is simply not the case with proper trimming, care and preperation of the meat.

Just a mental block that some can' t overcome.

I think that the movie Bambi has everything to do with this stereotype I don' t think that Walt Disney had any intent on harming this sport when they came out with this movie but what they managed to do is to turn this animal into a real person one that talks , feels , thinks and hurts just like a human being and some people cannot differentiate between the two so when they think about eating or killing this animal they look at it more like a human then they do a wild animal

In my life, I have had several non-hunters that I have met comment on bambi when they find out I like to deer hunt. Luckily, most of their comments have been in a fun teasing type manner, but it has always bothered me that they refer to the " Bambi Syndrome"

I have found that most of these people come from the city or urban USA. I am fortunate that I was raised and now live in rural USA, where hunting is a way of life.

But, I have noticed whether it is deer, rabbit, squirrel, quail, or any other wild meat, some people just have a problem with eating it. Since it does not come from the store they are very cautious about eating wild meat. However, most of them that are willing to try it like it, but there are a few that say " it really tastes good but, I just cant eat it" .

It has always amazed me at the number of people who have commented about about how terrible it is to hunt those poor animals and how cruel we are as hunters for it. Yet those same people think nothing of buying chicken, beef, veal, turkey etc. I ask them if they eat meat. When they reply that they do, I ask them how much of a chance that the animal they are eating had to get away. How long did they sit out in 10 degree weather up in a treestand to put that roast on the table. Or if they thought that the guy at the slaughter house let a cow walk because he didn' t want to take that one that day. I tell them to go to the slaughter house and tell me how humane that death is. I usually say that I love the meat just like they do. They jsut pay someone to do their killing and butchering. I do mine myself, and have alot more respect for the animal than the slaughterhouse does.

I ALWAYS tell people the meat I am cooking is venison or has wild game in it BEFORE they eat any. I find this saves a lot of hard feelings because no one likes to feel like they were tricked into eating something they didn' t want to.

I also don' t want anyone wasting any of my game meats so if you don' t want any GOOD........more for me :)

I don' t force any opinions or dishes on anyone. I simply tell them they are missing out on the most nutrtious, flavorfull and healthy meat available in the world and if they have EVER eaten at a fast food joint they should have no trouble at least trying my dish............at least with my dish you know what meat is in there.

I don' t think the movie has much of an influence on people. People who hunt know better, people who don' t already have preconcieved notions anyway.

My son of 7 accompanies me in the field and loves to hunt. He also likes the movie so I guess its like Lazy said, it' s all in how they were raised and what they know.

Atlasman, I couldn' t agree more. As I said, my wife made this roast and since she was serving it I didn' t say anything. I always tell guest when I am serving venison or other wild meat and I promised her that I would not serve her any without telling her. My wife was aware of that but elected to do it this way.:)[:' (][:' (]

Whenever you put a face and a personality on an animal, you have people that turn away from it.[:@]

my wife will occasionaly go down the emotional road and then I have to remind her that it' s just meat... " cows were alive you and they don' t bother you." and then a brief description about how some slaughter houses work and how hunters at least are (generaly) more human than that, usualy does the trick :)

I think what Plaid dad said makes the most sense out of this senseless notion. People won' t associate their food with lovely little critters. You won' t see pictures of young calves or lambs above the veal in the meat cooler at the store.
Some people are just finnicky. I couldn' t get my baby sister to eat worms when we was young and I sure tried.

Free Range brings more to the table flavor wise. That' s why I buy it.

I guess I' m more like the Wiley Coyote cartoon when he sees the Roadrunner...I see deer in the woods and in my eyes they have those white frilly things on their legs and all the lines of butchery are faintly visible and I start to salivate and my pupils turn into red throbbing hearts!:D[8D] Wile E. Coyote...Super Genius!

I honestly had a hard time eating the first deer I killed. I remember gagging thinking about it hanging from that tree. Guess I was kind of soft back then about it. Now I practically live off deer meat. But as far as Bambi goes, all three of my kids have watched Bambi and they all eat venison and love it. My 9 year old killed his first deer at the age 6.

I wonder what all the hypocrites would do if Disney came out with " BESSIE" the story of a baby cow?[:o]:D

RE: Bambi Vs venison

that' s a good question silentassasin. I have served venison for many years and I have never had anyone refuse it without bringing bambi up in the refusal. I kind of thought perhaps with the movie ' Babe' the sale of bacon and sausage and all of the cuts of pork, including ham, would drop but it didn' t happen. We had veal and lamb last night for dinner and my step daughter raved about it. Go figure!!!!

RE: Bambi Vs venison

My son and I really enjoyed Bambi when he was young. Now that we are hunters and vension eaters, we really enjoy laughing at all the unrealistic notions brought forth by the movie. For example:

1) A bunch of hunters chasing a doe across a pasture shooting wildly at a doe. How foolish! That doesn' t happen where I come from. Besides, the doe will run the little fellow off anyway as soon as the rut gets close!
2) Wasn' t it hunters that started the fire in the movie?
2) Poor Bambi, thanks to hunters doesn' t have a mother, but Dad becomes the nurturing parent. How ridiculous! Has anyone out there ever see a real buck with a nurturing instinct? Not me, in over 26 years of hunting!!

But you know what, city dwellers with no understanding of real wild animals will fall for that story every time. Too bad Disney could not get some truth to the city dwellers, then more would know just how false these notions are.

I would rather be a predator than a scavenger any day!!! At least I understand the value of wildlife, and the need to keep nature in balance and preserved. Anyone ever noticed what urban sprawl (i.e. city dwellers) has done to wildlife habitat? And that' s no cartoon, it' s for real!!

IMO, " Bambi" was the worst thing to happen to hunters in a long long time.

I have been a professional chef for more than 20 years. Butchered any commercialy available animal that ever walked or flew.
Tha sad truth of the matter is...most people...if they had to kill what they ate, would be vegetarians!
My opinion is that the only difference between a vegetarian and someone who eats meat is 48 hours without food!
