23 Days Later A Delaware Buck Story

I found my buck 23 days later. I shot this buck on November 8, 2008 @ 2:30PM. We looked for this buck everyday for 3 weeks and the only thing we found was a small trace of blood where he was standing after the shot. Anyway I received a phone call on December 1, 2008 for the property owner. They were riding their horses on a trail not too far away from my ground blind and rode up on a buck in the trail. It was just lying there with its head down. They went over to it and it was dead. Come to find out it was the buck I had shot back in November. I shot the buck in the upper front legs. The deer appeared to have a bad infection from the shot and finally expired. I feel terrible that the buck had to sufferfor 23 daysbut then I am also relieved that we finally found this buck and I can now sleep at night.

Wow, 23 days later!

Is the meat still good?

Congrats on finding him

RE: 23 Days Later A Delaware Buck Story

He accually died in front of them so the meat was still good but I donated it. Here is a pic of him on the trail cam back in September of this year. He lost a bunch of weight during those 23 days.

What a magnificent buck, congratulations!

I in no way want to take anything away fromyour story or experience; however that buck looks mighty healthy to me. Did you clean him up?

I see what looks to be a cut on the upper right leg but I don't really see any infection...not saying it isn't there just can't see it.

For a buck to die of infection 23 days after it was shot I would expect it to look a lot more emaciated than this one, especiallyduring the rut.

This is just an observation frommy experiencesand not a criticism of you.

I can easily see why you would be excited to get a buck like that.

He looks a LOT better than the one I recovered 29 days later [&o]. I can appreciate the emotions you likely experienced.

Congrats on finally finding him. That is a hoss of a DE deer. What part of DE did you get him in?

Jeff,
You are a tougher soul than I. 29 days later, I'd have been holding that thing at arms length, holding as little of the rack asI needed to, with latex gloves on and my head turned:D

RE: 23 Days Later A Delaware Buck Story

Man that is wierd, he look fairly healthy to die from a leg shot like that, very unusual I would think. Awesome that you found him and someone else ddin't get him first.

Rybo....we haven't had a night here above freezing in a while (19deg last night....and ask iamyourhuck how cold it's been here!....lol)....and the days have been unseasonably cool, as well. There actually wasn't too much "stink". When I took him to the taxi the other night....and we cut out his jawbone, though.....THAT was a different story.

Can you say stench? Can you say maggots?[:'(]

Dang, talk about luck having him die in front of them like that.

But he is huge! The tines are so long on that thing.

Beauty of a buck. Mass, long beams, tall rack, he's got it all. (I'd do something extra nice for the landowner that was responsible forthe belatedrecovery.)

That's a shame a buck like that had to die like that.

Is it really still your buck, considering it lived for 23 days? Did you have to tag it considering you didnt technically kill it? Dont mean to sound like an ass, just wondering.

Here we go again, is it still his buck? Hell NO, it's a found dead deer. Just like the hole in the horn or whatever one it was they found tangled in a fence. It died of natural/unnatural causes. If we're going to claim every dead deer we find as a confirmed kill people will be driving the highways during the rut to claim their next prize. Fact is, he didn't even find the thing and wouldn't have known about it except it blocked a riding trail for horses.[&:] He had his chance and it didn't work out.

Your way off and you have no right to slip your negative comments into this thread. Its his buck, no question, how can you try to take that away from him?

I'm way off?????? 23 days ago I'd have been way off. This deer was wounded. He made a terrible shot. The deer died a miserable death. He had given up. Someone else found the thing. I just can't congradulate someone for messing up a shot simply because someone found a dead deer almost a month later. You call it negative thoughts. I callit real life. I didn't take his buck away from him. His bad shot did that all by itself. Next time I hope he does better. Why does everyone feel a need to sugar coat a poor shot and a NON recovery in my mind. Heck, this deer could have been shot by someone else somewhere else at some other time as far as I'm concerned. Nothing to thump your chest about on this one.

well no congrats from me either ..... helluva buck, I mean geeesh thats a gorgeous deer but you didn't recover it and it's not a kill IMO

keep the horns but you can't be proud of them really .... you shot, wounded and lost him and that happens, I aint busting you for it, we all lose animals if we hunt hard and shoot IMO. but you didn't recover it, its not really something to be proud of is all i'm saying

gads what a gorgeous buck though .......

How can you pose for a picture like this? If this deer decomposed in the 23 days you wouldn't be doing it. You say the deer appeared to have died fromthe wounding of your arrow in the upper leg that was infected but show us noevidence of that. This deer could have been hit by a car for all you really know. To say you had a shot at this deer earlierand just foundhim would have been the thing to do. I offer you no congratulations on the harvest of this fine animal because I don't know it died at the hands of you. Keep the antlers for sure but don't claim it as your kill. Bullhockey[:'(]

some of them are likely just jealous that they dont have a buck like that hanging from their wall. Heck, most probably havnt even a seen a deer like that.
Yea, right. But you are partly right, I never saw a deer even close to that while living in NJ but I didn't hunt on zoo property either while there. Hell, come to think of it I never hunted there, too many uppitys there;)
