Well, I can see both sides of the story and they both conflict with each other, and that's not good. Drop doesn't want to shoot deer that he deemed too small for a video kill. He doesn't want to shoot 2.5 year old deer. Absolutely nothing wrong with that!Having said that...that buck would've been his personal best, and it isdefinitely above average for New Jersey and therearen't many opportunities like this, especially when you're limiting yourself to only taking these bucks on video, so there's where I can see the cameraman's side of the story.
Face the facts, New Jersey isn't a state where you're gonna have opportunity after opportunity of getting big, mature bucks on video like you would in another state. The ways and means of growing big deer simply aren't there. I wish they were though.
If it were me and my land, I'd tell the "production company" to take a hike and I'd enjoy the fruits ofmy labor without having to worry about satisfying anyone but myself.
Yes, but the thing is people are getting all wrapped up with the thought of seeing themselves on TV or selling thousands of videos.
And I commend Drop for not shooting just for the sake of seeing himself on a video. I guarantee that 95% of hunters in NJ would've laid that buck down. Myself included. But then again, I'm not filming my hunts and selling videos.;)

Sounds like a bad marrage. Divorce the production co and get back to hunting for fun. These videos are all too sensationalized anyway IMO. The best ones are the ones (if you can find them) that show everyday joes on an adverage hunt where you see spikes, forkhorns and an occaisional 120 or better. That damn Jackie Bushman started all this crap with the videos in the first place[:'(].
Post of the thread here.

RE: Honestly, what would YOU have done ?

As a professional camera operator and hunter who DOESN'T shoot outdoor videos, I'm siding with DropTine--for several reasons:
1. As the hunter in the field that makes him the PRODUCER in the field and camera ops do what the producer wants.
2. If he gives you lip, fire him and find another. Hunters with video cameras are a dime a dozen now and you might have to go thru another dozen to find a good camera operator but in the long run when you do it will pay off.
3. If he can't keep his mouth shut in the field and while hunting, he's not helping the situation any by making needless noise that will scare off the big deer.
4. Pay camera operators better and you will find more professional operators to work.(like me)
I don't do outdoor videos because outdoor production companies have not a clue as to what industry standards-pay wise- for good video is. ( and that's all I'm going to say about that)
5. If the field producer has higher standards than the production company then the company should be GRATEFUL that someone is upholding their standards and stand behind his decision.
I started shooting video about 22 years ago and have made a nice living with it. It's traveled me all over the world and I've worked with some very talented and smart people in the production industry.....until I started doing outdoor work....which is why I stopped doing outdoor work.
So DropTine----DO NOT lower your standards. Stick by your guns (bows) and don't take any abuse from your camera ops---EVER.
Just my opinion.

I think you should tell the camera guy to run the camera and not his mouth he is back there for a reason and its not to tell you what to do.

1- I will NOT sacrifice a beautiful animals life because "we need a deer on film"
This line makes me want to puke. [:'(] A beautiful animals life?? Come on. More inches, that's deer is dead, beautiful or not. Save the philosopical crap next time.

Lets not make it more than it is. You need to kill a deer on tape, and this one isn't the one you wanted, big deal.
