Mercy Killing.....would you???? (Update on pg. 3)

I watched a little BB (button buck)last night for about 45minutes, not sure how long he'd been there, but I notice him at about 1615, and he tried about 6 times to get up and struggled to get to his feet, only to fall back down. I ranged him at 38yds, and put my 40pin on his heart, and stuck him to the ground. I really thought about not shooting him, but he just didn't look like he was gonna get out of the woods. This is the same place I killed a coyote with my bow a couple weeks ago, so I know what his demise would have been. I tend to believe I did him a favor.

This is the main reason I felt I should finish him quickly....I shot him from the same stand site I shot her.....

I hope you legally tagged it, and BB is a button buck.

Good Job!!

Ya did the right thing in both lacing that yote and by taking the little BB out of it's misery.

Come on Junior, what do you think I did with it???? Landowners' permits are a wonderful thing, I suppose I could have put my last $15 antlerless tag on it, but I didn't even think about it because I have the landowner's permit as an option.

OHIO, you never said what was wrong with the deer. Was it wounded or just a sick puppy. Wounded I'd eat. Sick, I'd kill it and leave it for the coyotes.

Dave,
I can't tell. I skinned him out and don't see anything inside or outside that looks bad. I got a full bladder of urine out of him, and I can assuredly tell you his kidneys worked, and he didn't have a urinary/kidney infection or anything like that. His stomach was FULL, so I'm guessing he must've gotten around a little bit, but something just doesn't make sense. He's as healthy as a horse looking him over, and a heavy little SOB, I'd bet 140# live weight (and I have a 150# dog to compare him with). I didn't find any masses, or dislocations when I checked him over. He didn't smell "infected" per se, and trust me in my profession (I'm a nurse), I smell "infected" pretty often. [:'(] So I'm still unsure. I think the meat should be ok, except for about 1/3 of a backstrap the BH destroyed on the entry. But when you're 45' or so above something shooting 38yds, something's gotta give picking that spot. In all honesty, once boned out, (I still have him hanging because it's cool enough I can), I'll look him over pretty close and see what I find.

You sure something was actually wrong with him and he wasn't just being lazy when he got up to change positions? I have seen them act like they can't hardly get off their bed and just plop back down again. Either way, if you thought something was wrong with him, yeah it's the right thing. And I'll go ahead and say it...I would do it, tag or not. If no tag, then I would not take possession of it. Still the right thing, IMO. No different than the couple that I have seen hit by cars that I finished off with my bow.

I vote that you made the right decision. I have a BB running around shaking it's head and losing it's balance. Almost as if it is having a ceizure. If I catch up with it, I will take it out. I am not sure that I am going to eat it though. I'll be taking it to have the DNR look at it for sure. Anyone else see this crazy behavior?

I had to use my 2nd buck tag this year on a buck I wouldn't have shot otherwise, it had a crossbow bolt sticking out of it's back. Upon recovery it had only penetrated 2" at best with an expandable broadhead on it. Itfell outon it's death run but how was I supposed to know it was a crossbow bolt, it had only 12 or so inch's protruding. Couldn't let it go, bad PR to say the least if some non hunter were to see it. Anyway you did the right thing. BTW, very big BB.

RE: Mercy Killing.....would you????

Damn that BB is bigger than most of our year and half bucks

OHbowhntr 11-30-2008 07:29 PM

RE: Mercy Killing.....would you????

Well, I have more answers regarding this BB. He WAS 1.5yrs old, and he was missing some muscle mass to his left shoulder. I never saw anything injury wise that would explain it, but his trapezious muscle on the Left side was about half the size of the right. His spine also had a curvature, similar to that seen in humans with scoliosis, which I don't know if it had anything to do with his behavior or not. Game Warden said no diseases in the area or the state this year for that matter, and as long as the meat didn't have a rancid smell or discoloration it should be fine. None of the meat had any discoloration or smell to it, so I boned out about 55# of good lean meat, there was some surface waste from letting the deer hang for a while, and a little loss in the backstraps  from the entry wound, but otherwise, the meat all looked and smelled fine.

Here's a pic of the shot window I shot him through, and the death "puddle" he rolled into. The "puddle" is the root base of the downed tree that had blown down earlier this year in a wind storm.

Fats,
He was a 1.5yr old, but he wasn't a "normal" deer by any means.

Niehenke,
That sounds like an animal with ear mites. I have a Lab that gets them on occasion, and he does the same thing. Trap that deer and put some "Animax" topical anti-biotic cream in his ears twice a day for 1 week, and see if he gets better......:D

I've done it before. I shot a BB 2 years ago with a hole in his jaw he couldn't eat. So I downed him. So you did the right thing.

Well, I tagged out in PA, but it was definitely not the one that I was after but I had to take it out. Can't image the pain from each step.

I'm not saying anything negative here but this picture doesn't look like you were 45 feet in the tree. And even if you were, why were you? Good Lord!!! I have to ask too... If you were aiming for the heart but managed to destroy part of the backstrap, where did you actually hit him internally then?

RE: Mercy Killing.....would you????

Another thing, not trying to be a prick, and if I am one without the intention, please forgive me but...

It surprises me a bit that you being a nurse would ask this "would you" question. Perhaps in your head it was rhetorical at the time you posed it? I said this before on a similar thread but that question is the same as asking if it was the right thing to do to throw a life line to a drowning man.

You did the right thing Doug, you kow that. Good on ya.I had to put a BB down myself this year if anyone remembers my missing jaw BB thread. I almost wanna post the pics but I think it's too graphic.

gmil6184 12-04-2008 05:28 PM

RE: Mercy Killing.....would you????

I would have no regret of putting a deer out of its misery, tag or not. I think in situations like that the ethical concern about putting a wounded animal out of its misery overrides the legal concern of possibly taking a deer you don't have a tag for. Assuming the meat was ok to eat I would take the meat too instead of letting it go to waste.

RE: Mercy Killing.....would you????

You absolutely did the right thing. I shot a BB with a shattered leg and bad road rash on his hind quarters this year. I think its the right thing to do if the animal is in obvious distress that you know it will most likely die from.

Shane
