It is indeed from them scratching their backs with their antlers, the buck I shot in 02 had big blotches of bald spots, the taxidermist told me its from them rubbing their antlers on their backs.

Lots of times, bald spots come from fighting. I have seen a few bucks that have them, and the bald spots are probably from fighting. Bald spots can also come from an arrow taking the hair off. Also, going under a fence will probably take some hair off.
