All day hunt strategy?
 

For those all day hunts during the rut. Do you sit in one stand the whole time or do you have morning & evening locations, or do you even go further and break that into morning, midday & evening stand sites?

Mostly I have either sat all day in one, or split it up between 2 stands, but this year I was thinking that even in the rut, I have a few stand sites that I think are only good the first or last couple hours of the day and my time would be best spent in a 3rd stand for the midday segment. Is that too much bouncing around?

I don't know if its too much moving for your situation or not. For me, hunting on new land, I'll be staying put in the place I think I'll do the most good.

I just read something about this very thing. This year I am going to try something very similar and may even hit 4 spots in day. The thing with doing this is I think you need to have a plan for the day. Where you will be when while adjusting to circumstances as they happen. I am going to be covering some ground and hitting spots, trails, etc. that I think will be good for that time of day. I guess we'll see how it works LOL.

It depends. If I am in a spot that I have a lot of confidence in or if I'm in a funnel then I am setting in one spot all day. If I am not seeing any does where I am hunting then I am moving to somewhere that I am seeing does.

My typical all day hunt strategy is to be in the stand until 10 or 11, sometimes later if I'm seeing deer. Then go hunt some food, be back in a stand about 2 until dark thirty.:D A man has to know his limitations.

All that disturbance will make your odds go way down, sounds good but if you stop and think about it, it's not. If you pick the right rut stand, there will be no need to move.

This Is the exact way I look at It also. When I do my all day sits I don't move from that stand.

I've approached this differently on different properties. When on public land, I stayed in the same spot all day. When on private ground I know where everyone else is and when they are coming and going. I've gone as far as doing the three locations for am/mid-day/evening. The mid-day location movepaid off big2 years ago less then 20 minutes on that stand.

I typically set a stand for 3 hunts when doing all day hunts. Let's say I hunt it a morning and an afternoon and then again the next day til noon. If I haven't seen anything then I am moving, unless I am in one of those classic funnels that have unshakable confidence in. So, in that case I may get up and move during the middle of the day. I have to have a lot of confidence to continue setting a stand during that time of the year when I am not seeing deer. SO, if I am going to make a move then I am going to do it in the middle of the day so I can access the sign of where ever I decide to move to during daylight hours instead of doing it in the dark the following morning. If I am not on deer then I am walking until I find the a bunch of fresh sign which means (hopefully) a buch of does are using it and therefore bucks with be coming through there.

See last year I think I spent too much time in a couple spots during the midday hours because I knew how good they were morning and evening. I have a few stands that I know I can sit all day & see deer, but I’m not going to hunt the same 3 spots everyday for 2 weeks. I have several other stands that I feel (or have experienced) aren’t very productive midday, but dynamite early & late. I feel like I would be wasting the vast majority of my day sitting out these stands all day (as I did many days last season) when I could move to a location that would give me a better chance at midday action.
