% of hunters not using a harness
Was out on the urban hunt this weekend. While waiting for the parkgates to open at 5:30 i was speaking with5 otherhunters. 4 were going to be using tree stands and 2 (myself included) were using ground blinds.
Of the 4 using tree stands 2 were going to use no safety harness at all. Thats' 50%. Do you think that is a representative % of people who use safety harnesses? |
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Honestly I don't wear one either. Should I? Yep!!
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
50% is probably a good guess, sadly[&o]
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Ya I dont either, and I am not bragging about that.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I would say it's more like 5% that do where 1 around here. In fact, out of the 100s of hunters i know, i dont think i had ever heard ofanyone of them using a harness. I know i should, but i probably never will.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
ya I would even bet that it is more than that. Earlier in the season especially when it is hot and you are looking to cut off whatever you can and still stay covered. Plus they have become kinda expensive. After setting up your bow and buing arrows and broadheads. You start to think to yourself that you have been sitting most of your life.....What is the chance you will fall now?
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I should use one, but have never.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I would guess over 50% do not use one... I myself just started using one late last year. Everyone i hunt with doesn't really ever use one.... Sad but true.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I'm guilty of not always using a harness. Stupid, yeah.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I don't in my climber, but i do use one in my permanent i have build. Its about 25 feet up so i rappel myself out of it with climbing gear hooked into my harness.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
i dont...i dont go in a stand much cuz i dont like heights but when i do go up i dont use one...i think im gonna start tho. the one i have looks like a spider web and is annoying to put on.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I dont use one - never have - and I have taken a fall out of a stand...was climbing down so I dont think the normal "use while sitting in the stand" harness would have helped but one that comes down with you would ahve helped.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I always do!! It gives me peace of mind knowing I'm strapped in.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I always wear one. I would say with people I know a little over half of them wear one.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I have never used one. Hell I don't even think I know anyone that has ever used one...

RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Your message prompted me to check with the guys I hunt with. We are at 50% as well.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I really didn't know what to expect as far as a percentage.I was hoping that 50% was lower than normal but apparently 50% may be high overall.
I really have only ever hunted with 4 different guys. I'm the only one that does not use a tree stand but of the other 4 all use a harness. |
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Ha, I dont wear 1 all the time because its uncomfortable and I cant draw my bow with it on well. And I cant afford another better kind because the iPhone aint cheap to use.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I'd say it's 100% of the dumb ones! Too many people are killed or paralyzed each year from falling out of stands and I love my wife and kids too much to do that to them.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I wear one 100 percent of the time. I am not scared of many things, but being paralyzed is one of them.

If your lucky enough to break just your lower spine you will have a great phone to play games on until the rescue squad gets there. |

I will try and wear 1 but I cant see how you can shoot a deer and wear 1 at the same time. |
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Send me your address in a pm I'll send you one.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
start a poll and find out. I do not i should and will next year by the time i found one to fit me i was out of money

RE: % of hunters not using a harness
And yet, another sad post! How many times I saw during this last summer that people were trying to give away some of the extra harnesses that they have accumulated from buiying new stands, and so many of you still don't wear them. Statistics would indicate that a certain percentage of you who don't wear one will fall from your treestand sometime this Fall. Hope you have a good life insurance policy so your family won't suffer a financial burden along with the grieving that they will do over their loss.
Sorry, someone had to be the one to do it!:) |
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Count me as an I do'er and never go up without it. Guy died across the road from our camp last week hanging a stand. He wasn't using one and fell to his death. I have two kids and a great wife. That is incentive enough to wear it.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
My mothers boss while I was in college fell from his treestand while bowhunting. Nearly broke his back and shattered a ton of his ribs. He nearly died because he did not have a cell phone and had to struggle out of the woods. That made an impression on me.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Not a harness, but I do strap in when in a climber or hang-on.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I forgot to add that I am amazed by the number of you who don't. You guys are nuts.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
i wear the harness that came with my summit climber an its easy to put on an i dont even know its there.. now i admit i dont wear one in my climber but i wont go in a lock on without one... i jus started to use the hss life line this year.... very very nice ... i only have one right now..but when im climbingup the steps tothat stand i feel so much better than climbing up toa stand with out the lifeline...
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I hate to admit it, but I dont use a harness either. I dont like heights, so I hunt out of ladder stands, but I only use enough of the ladder sections to get me about 9 feet off the ground. I know that this is no excuse, but I wont use one of the cheaper ones that you have to have pictures to figure out how to put it on. When I do get one, I want to get one of the vest style ones. But right now funds wont allow it.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I wont hunt out of a stand without my safety system but thats just me
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
in the 5 tree stands i hunt in i use one in 3 of them, i usually try to but one of them is only about 10 ft high and the other theres no where i could attach one to the tree and not have it get in the way.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I have one of them crappy ones they have to give away with every treestand sold so no thankyou on your most generous offer. Really it seems that more then half the people on here dont wear 1? I really cant see falling out of a tree either, the stand breaking mabey but, still if the stand breaks then your stuck in the tree 20 feet dangaline? Seems more dangerous to me.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
I use a harness 100% of the time, but when you see my the height of my treestands you'd understand why.
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
Guys it's really not that hard to strap on a vest. I mean how do you even feel secure without one. I hope you don't become a statistic. Schultzy sure hope you get the feeling back below your neck. Cmon I don't want to be saying that. At least do it for those that love you. Besides cool people where proper equipment.[8D]
|
RE: % of hunters not using a harness
WOW I can't believe the amount of people here that don't use them . Well seasoned hunters as well .You never know when you might slip or have equipment failure. I have seen to many videos of people that didn't wear one and the results of them falling . Scared me into wearing one all the time

RE: % of hunters not using a harness
ive only used a treestand 1 time without a harness while bowhunting...it was out of my buddies treelounge he had setup as a lock on....my tie off rope was too short...i didnt like it....i did kill my first bowkill that day:eek:
ive noticed THIS season i got lazy and only use it going up about half the time in my climber...gotta get back to using it going up EVERY time...dont know why i quit using it going up once in a while... next year, maybe Christmas, im getting myself a good HSS vest or something similar...the standard summit one is fine...but id like a nicer one...something that cant get tangled into a mess... never had a trouble shooting or manuevering with the harness on...i tie off and slid the tether up the tree as far as i can reach while standing...that does a couple things...get it outta the way...keeps it almost tight when i sit down...minimizes the distance till i "hit the end of the rope" if i do fall, and keeps slack to a minimum to keep it outta the way....also screw in my hanger below it so it cannot slip at all if i were to fall.... i never wanna hit the end of that rope...but if i do, i'll be glad i hit the end of the rope, not the ground....i know a couple local guys that are in bad shape and/or paralyzed from falls...most cannot get into a treestand (even the ones that werent paralyzed) put the harness on at the truck...all the extra you gotta carry is the tie off rope....really its simple and easy.... part of the reason i quit using my lock ons because i cant leave a rope hanging from them to tie off to, and had no other way to tie off going up and coming down....falls are likely to happen while ascending or descending...thats when i REALLY want to be tied off...need to get back in that routine for here on out...only been a few times i wasnt tied off going up for some odd reason...must been tired..but i realized it when i hit the tope of my stand... |
