My compound is from 1992 or 93. works fine and I can shoot 2-3 inch groups at 40 yards. What more do you need.

I also have longbows and recurves I hunt with on occasion that are from the 50's

RE: Who shoots an 'old' bow still?

I'm still shooting my '92 browning X-cel, blazing 210 fps with aluminum, switched over to carbon last year but never chronied it. I bought it used from my brother for $100 in '01. I can hold 5 inch groups at 45 yds. Heading to MO next week to hunt our families property for deer and turkey with it. I would love to get something more modern, but not sure when I will ever be able to afford what I want.

If those are old, I wonder what my '65 Bear Kodiak Mag or my early 70's John Schulz longbow would be called. :D
Was waiting for that reply. LOL

LOL,
I still consider my 2001 Adcock as "new". :D
Best of luck to you this year!!!

RE: Who shoots an 'old' bow still?

I also shot a DARTON, Marvrick. I bought it in 1999 and have shot a lot of big deer with it even this year already. I try to talk myself into buying a new one every year, but why.. Would I like to have one yes. Do I need one to kill deer no. If it's not broke don't fix it. I will spend 1000 bucks on something I need first. LIKE A NEW GUN....LOL LOL....

I still have an old wooden browning compound mostly for just target practice this old thing still has round wheel plastic cams with 65% let off

RE: Who shoots an 'old' bow still?

I'm shooting an '03 Bowtech. My last bow before that still has a wooden riser and steel cables:D

RE: Who shoots an 'old' bow still?

I have aold Darton SL50 that must be pushing 25 YO. I still shoot the bow for the yuk yuk and to remind myself how far bows have really come. Ilob a few arrows with that and then the Hoyt and it's amazing.

The old girl will sure still kill but the feel, recoil, let off, noise and %50 let-off sure show you how outdated she is.

he would realize what he's been missing in the new technology
Not everyone has to have all this new technology to bow hunt. Nothing wrong with that!
Exactly. I have a compound I built about 4 years ago. I put hoyt redline limbs on a power tec riser with an HO #6 cam and idler. Built a string and laced her up. It zips arrows around 300 fps. It is dead on and is almost impossible to miss the target with, but I dont hunt with it much at all. I built it because I had cut off two fingers and could not draw a trad bow, so I needed something to hunt with that season. I have pulled it out when I cant use my trad gear (lack of practice tiime, or injury). I pretty much use my own custom long bows or recurves. Not everyone likes the hightec bows. Kind of like going from a gun to a compound bow. The next step is going from a compound to trad gear. Then the next step is going from lam bows to self bows. Its all part of getting to the point to where the thrill is still there.

RE: Who shoots an 'old' bow still?

I shoot a reflex extreme i bought new in '98. I can't bring myself to replace it yet, although everyone i hunt with has a new '07 or '08 model bowtech or matthews. I have taken many bucks with the bow, inlcluding 2 already this bow season. It was my first bow at 16 years old and i willkeepit even when i replace it in the deer woods. Actually all my family keep our firearmsbecause of theirsentimental value, so it isn't out of the ordinary for me to keepand hunt with the old bow.

RE: Who shoots an 'old' bow still?

Im the same way. I cant get myself to trading this old bow in or retiring it.. Still shoots dead on. replace cables and string and the thing is a shooter although a little slow but not compared to most of the newer compounds this bow shoots 258fps with 28" aluminum easton superlite and 100 gr. broad head/field point

I don't know if you missed it before, but I said "more power to him."Oh and I guessyou ALSOmissedwhat I said whenhe'd told methe reason forshooting that old bow.Inever said there was anything wrong with that. Maybe you should reconsider what you are about topost beforedoing it. Oh by the way, that was my dad Iwas posting about, I defend him every season about the bow he uses, so you leave that up to me.

Just curious on why you need to defend him. Seems like he is using what he wants to use. Shouldn't be anything wrong with that.

First off, Schultzy stirred up another forum...shocker. Mr. Knowitall over here turned nothing into something once again. Thanks Schultzy.

Bob, in response, he made it sound like he was defending him& I was downing him (my dad) which is totally not the case. When I say defending him, I mean when people ask why he doesn't update him bow, I say exactly what is being said...he is comfortable with it and it works. Why change what works?

Maybe I should usebetter english to understand. I nicely explain why he shoots what he does.

Can't wait to someone else blows this post out of context.

Speaking of blowing something out of context!! I never defended him. All I said there's nothing wrong with shooting low tech stuff. If anything I applaud your dad. How Is this stirring the pot??

I would keep in mind though that these types forumshave beenproven to be one of the worse ways of comunicating. There really is a lot that gets left out of a conversation. I bet if you and Schultzy were sitting at a campfire talking the conversation would have an entirely different tone and understanding. ;)

I shoot a Pearson Spoiler I bought in 1991. had a Cougar Magnum I bought in 1980 before that. I would still be shooting it most likely, but someone stole it from the trunk of my car. I went out 4 years ago hell bent on buying one of those new Mathews thinginges, just couldn't do it. My Spoiler still can shoot 1" groups at 30 yrds no problem. I guesses eyes just an ole stuburn bastard, set on provin you youngins that the old ways is still the bestist ways.

Well I have an 08 General, but I've been hunting with my 03 Bowtech Extremelately. I plan to use the general in Illinois in 3 weeks. I also still shoot my Bear Whitetail II (1986) at a whopping 186 fpsand I still have a 1976 Indian Recurve 45lb/28" (though I don't shoot it anymore).

My browning is 6 years oldnow. Can't see spening the money on a new one as long as this one still shoots the way it does. Not that I wouldn't mind getting a new one, if I had the extra cash...

My Hoyt Havoctec is an 03 and its still rock solid and I'm confident with it...Nothing special..268 FPS 27.5 inch draw at 68 pounds....plenty fast.

I just bought my first bow - a PSE Carroll Intruder II. Not sure if its from 95 or 96 - but its new to me! I figure if it could take down a deer a decade ago, it should still be able to today:D
