Albany, We have a Problem.

Went to get my hunting tags today. No doe tags (DMP) because they dont issue them after Oct. 1st. The guy said that they may release more on Nov. 1st depending on how many were given out. So I have 1 either sex tag for bow and a Buck tag for shotgun that I can fill with archery equipment. So here is the problem, If I see a doe before Nov. 1st,
Im going to shoot it. But that would mean that im tagged out till the 1st where there is only a chance I can get more doe tags only. This would mean the only buck I could shoot would be during shotgun season. Im so stupid for waiting this long to get my tags.

Be disciplined and only hunt for a buck until you acquire doe tags. ?[&:] Simple fix, why deprive yourself a buck with your bow when the chances of taking doe later on are so much better.

RE: Houston, We have a Problem.

Agreed, waiting is always a bonehead move...the easy fix is this, dont shoot a doe until after Nov1 when you get another tag, unless you are fine with not having a very good shot at a buck. If I were in your place Id buck hunt until I had extra doe tags.

Because I dont have a deer under my belt yet, It would be way to hard to pass 1 up.

Hey, you should have bought your super sportsman license and you'd also have an muzzleloader/bow antlerless and Muzzleloader/bow tag of either sex you could shoot.

Well, I have a lot of discipline when it comes to other stuff like workout routines and shooting routines but, I guess I can go get that muzzeloader permission if I cant hold out.

You have nothing to complain about In my opinion. Be happy you have at least one tag you can use now. When I started bow hunting In 1986 we only had one tag for bow hunting. I was happy to shoot whatever walked In front of me.

Get out there and go hunting with what you got and worry about the other stuff later on.

There will NOT be any tags available in your area, BT360 ..they arent anywhere near western ny ....or at least they havent been in the past ..... dont wait for it ...

So then you will transfer me 1 of your DMP then? J/K

That sucks, have to buy some DMP's on the black market then. Ill try and get 1 from my uncle, I gave him 1 last year for a deer he shot out of my stand. He made his daughters take the hunting class so they can get him 4 more tags.

Thats waht I was going to sugjest you do is find a friend that got 2 doe tags and see if he would be willing to give one up. It is nice that NY went to doing that. Good luck. Im counting down the days also.

Man, I totally feel bad for you... Getting one tag and then having to wait to maybe get a second? Sure sounds rough...

Seriously?

A) Its your fault for waiting as long as you did, so you get no sympathy from me on that one.

B) You have the possibility of getting a second one later on in the year to shoot another deer.

I get one deer, period. Thats it.

And I'm not complaining. I'm happy that I have equipment thats up to snuff and that I'm healthy enough to get out there and do it.

Consider yourself lucky enough to get out there. I'll be lucky if I get to hunt one weekend this year with college and all. Not that I'm complaining about having to stay on campus during the weekends;), but it would be nice to still get some hunting in.

BT360 .... I have 2 DMP's ..... an antlerless only, and a buck or doe tag ... i can legally shoot 4 deer with my bow this year :)..... now if the freakin season would only start [:@]

You do realize if you get the Super sportsman license you would have gotten another tag don't you????? You would have had 3, one antlerless, one either sex and a buck tag for regular season.

I didn't realize that the doe tags aren't issued out after Oct 1 . That is something to remember !

Well thats some pretty expensive tag soup. I probally going to end up shooting 1 deer this year because I would be the only 1 in my family to eat it.

As for waiting to get it, not my choice, There is a place to get tags about 1 mile around the corner from where I live and I rode my bike there in August to get my tags and they said Ineed a parent with me to co-sign for it. I cant wait till im 16.

Not if you already bought the Sportsman which includes fishing. If you didn't, you can still go back and buy a muzzleloader license for $16. I don't call that all that expensive for another tag. Super sportsman gets you3 tags and fishing plus a bear for $68. If you buy them separate they're like $16-19 for the 3 main tags.

Actually your uncle is still not legal. In NY you can only receive 2 DMP's max, sorry.

And Preach- you can use your bow during regular season if you'd like and use your regular season buck tag on it. 5 deer with bow for you!;):D

Makes me realize how lucky we are in Illinois. I can shoot 2 bucks and as many does as I want to buy tags for.

Al .... I'm pretty sure you can only use the buck tag for shotgun only .......of course, I am old and my eyes are dim...[:-]

Just checked .... it can be used after shotgun as well ... during the second archery or muzzleloader .....so it wont be there for me to use with a bow....

PT - you can hunt with your bow during regular gun season - but you can onlyuse your reg season buck tag or a dmp tag.
You can use the reg season tag during late bow/mz as well.

If you are looking for your first whitetail harvest then take a doe if given the opportunity and give yourself confidence (and backstraps). Last year I waited till later in the season and ended up eating doe tag soup!

RE: Houston, We have a Problem.

Back before we had the computerized system we had to have our DMP application in by Sept 9th I believe and you couldn't use them durring archery season and they couldn't be signed over.

I have a either sex archery/muzzleloader, antlerless archery/muzzleloader, antlered regular tag, 2 doe tags issued to me plus 2 more issued to a landowner that have been signed over to me.

Thats 7 deer and I'll try to use every tag. I donate what my family/friends and I don't eat.

Last year we (landowner not me) had 9 nuisence tags the DEC issued. 2 were used but not by me.

I am having trouble feeling bad for you, in Maine unless you hunt in one of the expanded archery zones (which are very small) you get one tag for the whole year , in the northern part of the state it is buck only, no does no matter what the weapon, so cheer up.

yessir, you are correct ..... Al stated I could use my gun buck tag during Archery, which is partly true .... it can be used during the SECOND archery .... most of the deer are gone and it's colder than a witches .....well, you know :D

I'm not 100%, but I believe that if you bow a muzzzle loader tag it will allow you to take another buck or doe with archery or muzzleloader. Check with DEC.

RE: Houston, We have a Problem.

I had the same problem I didn't realize the Oct 1st cut off which is insane if the tags are there then release them, stupid friggin rule. the only saving grace is with a super sportsman you geta antlerless tag nad either sex tag so I can still poke a doe and buck with bow or muzzle, and hopefulyl get my management permits on the 1st.

Made that mistake once, so I get my tags early now. Five tags and I always have the option to go over to Sampson State Park where they will give me a tag to hunt there (while supplies last). I will be happy just to fill my freezer, though. (Of course, that includes the aux freezer out in the shed!)
