I like to be as quiet as possible until the pre-rut kicks in.

My experience is it's more of a "curiosity" call...
Meaning small Deer have come in from using it, or coyotes.
The other day I had a Doe and a Fawn come into my set-up and leave. I managed to drag them back in twice with the can.
However, they seemed to be more "alert" than relaxed.
So be careful as what to expect, as deer jumping your string is more common after you educate them that something may be out of the ordinary.
They know there home (woods) well!

I'd pass on it for now as well. It's possible that out of curiosity a deer will come into it, but it is a lot less likely than during the pre-rut/rut. The other possibility is that if you use it now and it doesn't work, those deer aren't going to come close to you when the time is right, because they've been hearing it for the last month. But then again, it is deer hunting and they do what they want to do when they want to do it. But I still wouldn't.

It's never too early for contact calls. Do you (general term) honestly think deer shut up until the preseason rut?
